Computer tomography of the brain and spectrophotometry of the CSF in cerebral concussion and contusion.

Computer tomography (CT) and spectrophotometry of CSF were performed in 30 patients with the clinical diagnosis of cerebral concussion or contusion. The patients with concussion all had normal CT-findings. Spectrophotometry of CSF was sometimes positive for cerebral contusion with normal CT-findings, but the two methods were complementary so that the extent of the lesion was determined by CT and spectrophotometry of CSF indicated the cause.

Variation with time of the attenuation values of intracranial hematomas.

Fourteen cases of subdural, epidural, and intracerebral hematoma, in which the time of the trauma or bleeding was known, were selected. Attenuation of samples taken at surgery showed good correlation with attenuation values determined by computed tomography (CT). The decrease in the attenuation of the hematoma from the time of trauma or bleeding was studied.

Computed tomography of cranial subdural and epidural hematomas: variation of attenuation related to time and clinical events such as rebleeding.

Forty-one cases of subdural and nine of epidural hematomas were studied with regard to attenuation and the time between trauma and computed tomography scanning. The attenuation of the hematomas showed a consistent decrease with time during the first 4 weeks. High attenuation of chronic subdural hematomas is explained by a sudden or continuous rebleeding. No correlation was found between the attenuation of the hematoma and the attenuation of venous blood from the same patient.

Myxofibrosarcoma: a pathologico-anatomical, microangiographic and angiographic correlative study of eight cases.

A correlated angiographic, microangiographic and histological study of eight myxofibrosarcomas is presented. Myxofibrosarcoma is a very recently described type of malignant soft tissue tumour characterized by a mucoid and nodular appearance, predominantly arising superficially in the extremities and trunk in elderly people. Microscopically, the lobulated and myxoid tumours in the present series showed a characteristic plexiform network of fine capillary-like vessels and occasional wide, sinusoidal, angulated vessels. On plain radiographs they were all dense and well demarcated. Angiographically the tumours appeared highly vascular, with irregular tumour vessels often arranged in a patchy or nodular fashion. All revealed signs of a rapid circulation. The microscopic and angiographic appearances were correlated, in two cases utilizing microangiography. In the presence of a superficially located tumour with high density on plain radiographs, marked vascularity, patchy or nodular opacities, and signs of rapid circulation on angiogram one should suspect this diagnosis.

Computer tomography of traumatic extracerebral lesions.

Twenty-one traumatic intracranial extracerebral lesions in 15 patients were examined with the EMI scanner using the 160x160 matrix. The results were compared with operation and angiographic findings. Although angiography seems to be a more reliable diagnostic aid, computer tomography has important advantages as it provides information on the nature and extent of the extracerebral lesion as well as on concomitant brain damage.

Computer tomography of traumatic intra- and extracerebral lesions.

Computer tomography was performed in 29 patients with intra- or extracerebral lesions and the results evaluated retrospectively and compared with angiography, operation or autopsy findings. Many subdural haematomas were difficult to distinguish and in two cases it was impossible. Angiography proved to be more certain. In all cases the intracerebral heamatoma was considerably more evident at computer tomography than at angiography and for contusions, the information provided is fully comparable with that by angiography.

Studies in cholestasis of pregnancy. V. Gallbladder disease, liver function tests, serum lipids and fatty acid composition of serum lecithin in the non-pregnant state.

Women from an earlier series of cholestasis of pregnancy (CP) were called for a retrospective study to consider presence of gallstones in the gallbladder (evaluated by cholecystography), liver function tests, serum lipids and lipoproteins and the relative fatty acid composition of serum lecithin (as determined by GLC). The attendance in the retrospective study was 60%. Estimated on the total series (assuming that none of the non-responders would have a positive X-ray), the incidence of gallbladder disease was 23.7%. Among women with previous cholestasis of pregnancy and with a positive X-ray finding no characteristic changes in liver function tests or serum lipids were revealed. The women with positive X-ray had, however, a lower alpha-lipoprotein cholesterol than women with negative X-ray. A characteristic finding among women with positive X-ray was furthermore the low relative content of palmitic acid (16:0) in serum lecithin. Also women with negative X-ray had a lower relative content of palmitic acid than controls. It is suggested that the low palmitic acid content is expressive of an influence on liver lecithin synthesis pathways and that the serum lecithin fatty acid composition reflects similar changes in bile lecithin. The "basic defect" in CP influencing liver lecithin synthesis might be the primary cause for disturbed cholesterol solubility in bile and of the frequent occurrence of gallstones in CP.

Liposarcoma a clinicopathologic, radiographic and prognostic study.

The present investigation is a clinicopathologic, radiologic and prognostic study of 122 liposarcomas registered in the Swedish Cancer Registry between 1958 and 1966. The incidence of liposarcoma in Sweden was estimated to be 2.5 cases per million inhabitants per year. The liposarcomas were divided into 4 main subtypes according to WHO's recommended classification (1969): well-differentiated (33 cases), myxoid (22 cases), rundcell (14 cases) and pleomorphic types (21 cases). When predominantly well-differentiated or myxoid liposarcomas contained areas of round-cell or pleomorphic types (24 and 8 cases, respectively), they were classified separately, thus adding 2 further subtypes to our classification. The validity of this histologic classification was emphasized by the prognostic study, based on a 10 year follow-up. The differential diagnosis for each of the 4 main subtypes is discussed. Three well-differentiated, lipoma-like liposarcomas which contained highly vascular hibernoma-like areas are described. Two well-differentiated liposarcomas situated in the neck and upper part of the back, respectively, of elderly patients included area similar to "spindle-cell lipoma" (Enzinger). An intracytoplasmic network of birefringent fibers with the staining reaction of collagen was found in 2 well-differentiated fibrosing liposarcomas...

Examination of placental proteins in charge-shift immunoelectrophoresis.

Three pregnancy-associated proteins, pregnancy-specific beta1-glycoprotein (SP-I), pregnancy-associated plasma protein A(PAPP-A), and placental lactogen (hPL) were examined by charge-shift immunoelectrophoresis. PAPP-A and hPL exhibited hydrophilic properties whereas SP-I was amphiphilic. These observations suggest that SP-I is a cell membrane protein.
