Visibility of the temporal horns on computed tomography.

The Polaroid pictures of computed tomographic examinations in 557 consecutive cases without visible temporal horns and 401 cases with temporal horns were examined. The most probable diagnosis of the patients are stated. Bilateral widening of the temporal horns was seen in cases with hydrocephalus of different causes. Widening of only one of the temporal horns was seen in cases with a unilateral mass, regional atrophy and of the temporal horn. Extremely small temporal horns may be visible on a normal examination.

Infantile bilateral striatal necrosis. Clinical and morphological report of a case and a review of the literature.

A case of infantile bilateral striatal necrosis (IBSN) is reported, the first one found in Scandinavia. Extensive clinical and laboratory investigations did not reveal any evidence of a neurometabolic disease. By computed tomography (CT) degeneration of putamen of either side was detected. The neuropathologic findings included extensive bilateral destruction of the striatum and pallidum and degeneration of the substantia nigra and tegmental nuclei. In the damaged regions, accumulations of cells containing sudanophilic lipids were found and Alzheimer type II glial cells, which were also seen in the cortex. On the basis of the clinical picture and the destruction of nerve cells in particular areas of the brain, in the present case and previously published cases of IBSN, the possible role of glutamate and other excitotoxic transmitters in the pathogenesis of the disease is discussed.

A large convexity meningioma followed by liquorrhoea from a nasal encephalocele. A case report.

A 46-year-old woman was readmitted, two years after removal of a large convexity meningioma, because of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea from a nasal encephalocele eventually visualized by CT-scan. The encephalocele was extirpated via an intracranial approach, and its histological appearance is described. The aetiology of this extracranial brain tissue protrusion is discussed. It is suggested that the mechanisms behind the formation of this encephalocele are a combination of a congenital malformation and the long term increase of the intracranial pressure due to the meningioma.

Comparison of pregnancy-associated murine protein-1 and human pregnancy zone protein.

Immunological cross-reaction between human pregnancy zone protein (PZP, SP-3, alpha 2-PAG) and pregnancy-associated murine protein-1 (PAMP-1) was demonstrated by countercurrent line immunoelectrophoresis using antibodies against the proteins raised in hens. The levels of PZP and PAMP-1 were measured during pregnancy and found to be very similar in the first half of pregnancy. Both proteins were found to be heterogeneous and separable according to surface properties. It is suggested that the murine PAMP-1 can be used to study the physiology of human PZP.

Blackout and other artefacts in computed tomography caused by fillings in teeth.

The disturbing artefacts from fillings in teeth were experimentally studied. Pins of amalgam and composite with different diameters were scanned in 10 mm and 5 mm slices. Amalgam gave five different artefacts: (1) blackout, (2) tuning fork artefact, (3) star-burst, (4) collimation artefact in the narrow slice and (5) connecting line artefact. The composite material with an attenuation of about 5000 HU gave no blackout and mild degree of the other artefacts except for the collimation artefact, which was equal to that with amalgam.

Immunochemical characterization and serum concentrations of pregnancy-associated serum proteins in mice.

The glycoprotein structure of two pregnancy-associated murine proteins, alpha 1-PAMP and alpha 2-PAMP, was analysed by using concanavalin A (Con A) affinity electrophoresis: alpha 1-PAMP was completely precipitated by free Con A, whereas alpha 2-PAMP showed heterogeneity. The isoelectric points of alpha 1-PAMP and alpha 2-PAMP were determined at 4.2 and 4.0 respectively by using crossed immunoelectrofocusing. The alpha 2-PAMP was detectable only in the serum of pregnant mice and fetuses. Maternal serum concentrations increased from Day 8 of pregnancy, remained at high values between Days 14 and 18, and could not be detected by 2 days post partum.

Comparison of the pregnancy-associated murine protein-2 and human pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein.

Immunological cross-reaction between human pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein (SP-1) and pregnancy-associated murine protein-2 (alpha 2-PAMP, PAMP-2) was demonstrated by line immunoelectrophoresis using antibodies against the proteins raised in hens. The pattern of change of PAMP-2 and SP-1 values in serum during pregnancy was very similar. The murine placental growth-rate corresponded to PAMP-2 levels in maternal serum during pregnancy, indicating placental origin. We suggest that the mouse and its PAMP-2 can be used to study human SP-1.

Detection of extracranial carotid stenosis by computed tomography.

Ten patients with transient ischaemic attacks (T.I.A.) within the carotid territory were examined by aortic-arch angiography and computed tomography (C.T.) of the neck. C.T. showed evidence of carotid calcifications in all 17 angiographically abnormal arteries, and there was no evidence of calcification in the 3 normal arteries. C.T. of the neck promises to be a useful technique for the investigation of patients with T.I.A.s.

Concomitant arteriovenous vascular malformation in skeletal muscle: a clinical, angiographic and histologic study.

A vascular malformation in skeletal muscle is described in 4 patients. Pathologically and anatomically, it consists of an abundance of concomitant arteries and veins and thick-walled capillaries. Angiography demonstrates the high vascularity of the lesion, and contrast medium appears early in draining veins indicating arteriovenous shunting. In the angiograms, the highly vascular region displays a certain striation which is due to the presence of muscle fiber bundles running between the pathologic vessels. This angiographic picture suggests benignity: an intramuscular malignant tumor rarely leaves intact muscle fiber bundles passing right through it.

Demonstration of an analogue to human pregnancy zone protein in the African green monkey.

A serum protein in the grivet (Cercopithecus aethiops), immunologically cross-reacting with human pregnancy zone protein (PZP), is found in males as well as in nonpregnant females. The electrophoretic mobility, antigenic cross-reactivity, molecular weight, and carbohydrate structure appear analogous to PZP; however, contrary to the situation in man, exogenous estrogens cause a fall in serum concentration of the protein.

Drusen in the optic nerve head. Verification by computerized tomography.

Five patients with a clinical diagnosis of buried or exposed drusen of the optic nerve head were examined by computerized tomography (CT). The relative x-ray absorption within their nerve heads was significantly larger than in controls, reflecting the high calcium content of drusen. Computerized tomography, and particularly high-definition CT, therefore merits consideration in the investigation of disc swelling.

Hemangiopericytoma: a clinicopathologic, angiographic and microangiographic study.

A clinicopathologic study of 11 hemangiopericytomas is reported, and the results of clinical angiography in 4 patients and a correlated microangiographic-histologic study of 1 tumor are presented. Six of the tumors were collected and accepted as hemangiopericytomas in a review of 42 tumors registered as hemangiopericytoma in the Swedish Cancer Registry during the period 1958--1968. The other 5 tumors occurred in patients treated by us. The histologic examination and the follow-up information showed that it can be difficult to predict the prognosis on morphologic grounds, that borderline tumors exist and that a recurrence as well as a metastasis may dedifferentiate. The tumors studied by clinical angiography all proved to be highly vascular. Irregular vessels of varying caliber were filled with contrast medium and, in addition, a prominent diffuse opacification took place. Early filling of veins was not noted despite the high vascularity. The correlated microangiographic-histologic study suggests that the irregular vessels seen on clinical angiograms corresponded to wide, angulated, thin-walled vessels without muscle coat or elastic tissue, while the diffuse opacification was caused by a dense network of delicate, branching, slit-like capillary spaces.

An immunoprecipitation-dissociation technique for large scale antibody purification and an antigen consumption electroimmunoassay for antibody quantitation. A model study with antibodies to pregnancy zone protein.

A simple immunoprecipitation--dissociation technique for large scale purification of antibodies is described, which comprises selective denaturation of the antigen and recovery of the antibody fraction by exclusion chromatography at low pH. Its use is illustrated by the purification of antibodies to pregnancy zone protein. A purification factor of about 60 was achieved. An antigen consumption electroimmunoassay was also developed which permits quantitative determination of the antigen binding activity of antibodies with a given specificity. The methods have general application.

Immunosuppressive effect of human pregnancy zone protein on H-2 incompatible mouse heart allografts.

Human pregnancy zone protein (PZP) given intraveneously, significantly (p less than 0.001) prolonged the survival of heterotopic A/J heart transplants in A.CA recipients, compared to untreated control recipients, recipients treated with phosphate buffered saline and recipients treated with a control preparation from male serum. The results support the hypothesis that PZP protein exerts an unspecific immunosuppressive effect in vivo.
