A program for preoperative workup and post-operative follow-up in children with craniofacial anomalies is described. Objective measurements were made with cephalometry and computed axial tomography. Improvement in length of the anterior cranial base and shape of the calvaria after surgery and growth was demonstrated in this manner in serial follow-ups. It was concluded that both cephalometry and computed tomography were essential for the diagnosis, surgical planning and follow-up for this group of patients.
Outbred Mol:SPRD rats were maintained in surgical anaesthesia for two hours by using five different drug combinations: 1) pentobarbitone, 2) ketamine + diazepam, 3) ketamine + pentobarbitone, 4) atropine + diazepam + fentanyl + fluanisone, 5) atropine + etorphine + acepromazine. Respiratory rate, arterial O2 and CO2 tensions, arterial pH, base excess, mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at set intervals from 30 to 120 min. from the initiation of anaesthesia. Atropine + diazepam + fentanyl + fluanisone caused no disturbance of acid-base balance, whereas the other drug combinations induced moderate to severe acidosis. Arterial blood pressure was reduced by all methods. Pentobarbitone and regimens including ketamine reduced heart rate, whereas combinations with etorphine and fentanyl caused a rise in heart rate.
A human mesothelioma was heterotransplanted to nude mice, and the urinary excretions of hypoxanthine, xanthine, pseudouridine, orotic acid, 7-methylguanine, and 1-methylhypoxanthine have been followed before and after the tumor transplantation. The compounds were measured by means of isotachophoresis, which has been found a rapid and precise method. The tumor reached maximum size within 30 days, and at this time a significantly increased excretion of pseudouridine and hypoxanthine was observed. Tumor growth was stopped by chemotherapy (vincristine, cyclophosphamide, prednisolone, and Adriamycin), and corresponding to this, a decrease occurred in both pseudouridine and hypoxanthine excretion to normal values.
External hydrocephalus means abnormal fluid accumulation in the subarachnoid space under increased pressure with no or slight widening of the ventricles. 9 children were investigated because of pathologically increasing head circumference and abnormal transillumination. PEG and/or CT showed widened sulci frontally, parietally and interhemispherically but no widening of the ventricles. 7 patients were subjected to exploratory craniotomy which disclosed a deep arachnoid space. 2 patients were shunted. All follow-up CT examinations showed normal conditions. We suggest that infants with clinical signs of hydrocephalus and CT picture of external hydrocephalus should not be treated with shunt. The widening of the subarachnoidal space will normalize. The rate of headgrowth will also normalize.
The synthesis of murine alpha-foetoprotein (m-AFP) was induced in 43 out of 47 adult mice of both sexes by sc administration of 100 micrograms oestradiol-17 beta every second day. The m-AFP serum levels of the oestrogen treated male and female mice were 7 and 17%, respectively, of the levels in mice during late pregnancy. Immunohistochemical examination of liver tissue revealed the intracellular presence of m-AFP in less than 0.5% of the hepatocytes scattered throughout the liver of the oestrogen treated mice.
Twenty-seven infantile autistic children, nine children with other kinds of childhood psychoses, 23 children with mental retardation, and 16 normal children were examined with computerized tomography of the brain. Gross abnormalities were seen in 26% of the autism cases. It was also estimated that about the same proportion of a total population of infantile autistic children show gross changes of CT brain scan. Abnormalities in the region of the frontal horns of the ventricular system tended to be more common in the psychosis groups than in the normal group. Clear-cut right occipital protuberation was rather common in the small group of other psychoses cases but was only marginally more common in the autism than in the normal group. Evans' ratio was significantly higher in all three abnormal groups than in the normal group.
Corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) was purified by one step positive immunospecific affinity chromatography and antibody to human CBG produced in goats. The goat anti-human CBG was used in the development of a precise rocket immunoelectrophoresis for CBG quantification. CBG levels measured by this assay were found to increase from 30 AU/ml to 100 AU/ml during pregnancy. There was no statistically significant association observed between levels of CBG, or circulating estriol, or pregnancy zone protein. Circulating CBG was estimated in 32 women with pregnancy associated hypertension, the levels were all within the normal range, and not significantly different from those seen in matched controls.
Hypophysectomy of female mice resulted in the disappearance of pregnancy-associated murine protein-1 (PAMP-1) from the circulation within a week. Maintenance of physiological levels of oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, LH, FSH or prolactin was not sufficient to maintain a normal PAMP-1 level in the hypophysectomized animals. However, administration of oestrogen in large doses to adult male mice with undectatable levels of circulating PAMP-1 caused PAMP-1 to appear in the blood. Testosterone treatment of females inhibited the PAMP-1 synthesis.
Craniofacial growth after surgery in children is not completely understood. We have therefore formed a programme for pre- and postoperative studies with both roentgencephalometric- and computed tomographic investigations. This regimen results in overlapping information. Thus, an assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods was made and exemplified in four patients. In our experience both cephalometry and CT are essential for the diagnosis, surgical planning and follow-up of surgically treated children with craniofacial anomalies. To minimize the radiation doses and the diagnostic procedures which in these cases often includes general anesthesia, patients with isolated, asymmetrical conditions such as plagiocephaly, might be followed with CT only, since roentgencephalometry can not add much information.
The human ovarian arteries and their anatomical relation to the utero-ovarian venous plexus were studied in surgical specimens using roentgen angiography and corrosion casts. The arteries were in close contact with the veins, had a tortuous shape and sometimes a helical folding of inner layers of the wall. The results obtained are similar to the findings in a number of animal species and may represent the morphological basis for a counter-current exchange mechanism.
