The behaviour of some human arteries as regards the corrected circumference: a statistical research.

In 500 human fresh cadavers (250 males and 250 females) the corrected circumference has been measured of the following arteries: aorta, coronary arteries, branches of the aortic arch, arteries of the base of the brain, iliac arteries. Elaborating these data by a computer, the following age power function, expressing the arterial circumference, has been found: y = Kxn less than 1, being y the corrected circumference, x the age and K and n constants, specific for each artery. By means of this equation the inconstancy of the measured data has been suppressed. The statistical elaboration has given the following results: 1. No evidence has been found on a statistically significant difference between male and female arteries, even if the male sex has generally vessels a little larger than the female sex. 2. No evidence has been found on a statistically significant difference between right and left arteries, even if, generally, the right vessels are a little larger than the left ones. On the other hand, for the coronary arteries and for the vertebral arteries, the left side is prevalent. 3. As a general statement, there is evidence that the arterial circumference of considered vessels increases with ageing.

Postoperative radiation therapy after vaginal surgery for endometrial cancer.

From 1958 to 1978, 88 consecutive patients affected by endometrial cancer were referred to the Radiology Institute of the University of Florence, for radiation therapy after vaginal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Five and ten-year actuarial survival rates are 71% and 62%. In the evaluable patients, results are analysed according to: extension of the tumor, as assessed by pathological evaluation (60 pats.), histologic grade of differentiation (44 pats.), and neoplastic infiltration of myometrium (32 pats.). When the tumor is limited to the uterine body, a 5-year actuarial survival is achieved in 89% of the cases; when the cervix or the adnexa and other pelvic structures are involved, this percentage decreases to 62.5% and 37.5%. The prognosis is also affected by the histological grade of differentiation and the depth of myometrial infiltration.

Statistical research on the corrected circumference variations of some human arteries related to sex, side and age.

The corrected circumference of the common and internal carotid arteries, the subclavian arteries, the common, external and internal iliac arteries has been measured in 500 human fresh cadavers. The collected data have been statistically elaborated and the age power function (y = k x n less than 1) has been found. Generally no significant difference has been noticed between the right and the left side as well as between the two sexes. As a general statement, there is some evidence that the arterial circumference of considered vessels increases progressively with ageing.

Cervical lymph node metastases from an unknown primary tumour.

Forty-nine cases of cervical lymph node metastases from an unknown primary tumour have been reviewed. All the patients were treated by radiation therapy. In 7 cases the primary tumour was detected from 4 to 53 months after the end of treatment. The crude survival rates at 2 and 5 years were 39 and 32 per cent, respectively. The survival rate was correlated to sex, microscopic appearance, stage, and extent of the nodal involvement.

[Scanning electron microscopy of the human spermatic tract].

The human excurrent duct system of the testis (rete testis, ductuli efferentes, ductus epididymis and vas deferens) have been studied by the S.E.M. The specimens have been taken from subjects who underwent surgery for prostatic carcinoma. For the S.E.M. the specimens have been prepared according to usual techniques: fixed with 2.5% glutaraldehyde and 1% OsO4 in Millonig's buffer, dehydrated in ethanol, dried by the critical point technique in CO2 and coated with gold-palladium 10%. The cavities of the rete testis show a flat epithelium with short microvilli and single cilia. The ductuli efferentes are lined by long-ciliated columnar elements and by stubby elements provided with microvilli. Globular extrusions, probably representing the swollen apices of epithelial cells, have been interpretated like the expression of a secretory activity. The ductus epididymis is lined by high columnar epithelium provided with thick microvilli. In the lumen it is possible to observe little globular masses with variable diameters, isolated or more often grape-shaped. These have been interpretated as the expression of secretory activity microapocrine in nature. The vas deferens is bounded with columnar epithelial cells with variable morphology. Some of them, infact, have crowded microvilli, while some others have swollen apices bulging into the lumen. These globular extrusions are probably the expression of the secretory activity.

[Scanning electron microscopy of the chick embryo mesonephros].

The mesonephros of chick embryos from the 7th to the 15th day of incubation has been studied by scanning electron microscope. The material was submitted to the common techniques for scanning electron microscopy using a special fixing agent that does not damage the embryonic tissue (Litke e Low, 1977). At the 7th day of incubation, the mesonephric corpuscles show a capsule whose parietal lamina is formed by flattened cells, while the visceral lamina already shows podocytes provided with pedicels interdigitating around the capillary loops. In the same period the proximal tubules appear to be bounded by columnar cells with long and thick apical microvilli. The Henle's loop is lined by low cells with slightly dome-shaped apices provided with single cilium. The distal convoluted tubules are lined by a low columnar epithelium. The cell apices show microvilli shorter and more rare than those found in the proximal portion. This pattern is present till the 12th day of incubation, when regression phenomena occur. These are mainly represented by a progressive occlusion of the tubules and a gradual alteration of the podocytes.

[Scanning electron microscopy of the human male genital tract].

The three-dimensional features of the human male genital tract (rete testis, ductuli efferentes, ductus epididymis and vas deferens) and seminal vesicles epithelium have been studied by scanning electron microscopy. The luminal surface of the epithelial cells shows a particular pattern in the different organs, especially for the development of the microvilli and for the nature of the secretion. Particularly, while the columnar cells of the ductus epididymis and vas deferens present a secretory activity, microapocrine in nature, the seminal vesicles epithelium is characterized by a merocrine secretion. The present results are discussed in relation to the previous observations obtained by light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.

[Scanning electron microscopy of the inner surface of small intestine in chick embryos].

The inner surface of the midgut of chicken embryos ageing between seven and fifteen days incubation has been examined by scanning electron microscope. In this period the surface of the mucous membrane undergoes significant morphological changes; in fact, while at seven days incubation it appears to be smooth and regular, in the following days it begins to show longitudinal folds increasingly higher, more numerous and complicated. Since eleven days incubation some folds take a zigzag appearance that progressively becomes more evident and extends to all the folds. In the mean time, the enterocytes undergo a gradual specialization and represent the only type of epithelial cells in this stage of development. Their apex until seven days incubation is dome-shaped, provided with short microvilli and separated from the surrounding cells by deep circular grooves. About thirteen days the apex appears to be less swollen, with longer and more numerous microvilli and bounded by microplicae arranged in an hexagonal disposition.
