This report describes a 4-mth-old infant with polyarteritis nodosa who had a rapidly fatal course with the diagnosis ultimately being made at necropsy. The pathological lesions consisted of diffuse arterial disease with severe coronary involvement, and additional unusual features included a ruptured coronary artery aneurysm and a valvulitis of the mitral and aortic valves similar to that seen in rheumatic fever. The aetiology of polyarteritis is briefly summarised and the possibility of an immune reaction to foreign antigens, such as drugs or viruses, is considered.
1. Eight peptides were separated from the CNBr digest of troponin T from rabbit white skeletal muscle and characterized. 2. By study of the amino acid sequence of the methionine-containing peptides isolated after chymotryptic and tryptic digestion and of the N- and C-terminals of the CNBr peptides, six of the latter were shown to be arranged in the sequence CNB1-CNB2-CNB5-CNB6-CNB8-CNB7. The other two peptides, CNB1' and CNB3, have been shown to be partial digestion products. 3. The CNBr peptides CNB1' and CNB2 contained a common sequence and were the only peptides in CNBr digests of troponin T that formed a complex with tropomyosin as judged by viscometric and electrophoretic studies. 4. It is concluded that tropomyosin interacts with the N-terminal half of the troponin T molecule approximately in the region lying between residues 70 and 160. 5. Electrophoretic evidence indicates that tropomyosin and troponin C interact with troponin T. 6. None of the major CNBr peptides of troponin T isolated formed a complex with troponin C on electrophoresis at pH 8.6.
It is generally accepted that platelets from the main constituent of a thrombus. Experimental work has shown that 5-hydroxy-tryptamine (5 HT) in a concentration of 0.06 mg/ml produces clumping of the platelets. In view of this it was decided to estimate platelet 5 HT in thrombotic and non-thrombotic diseases. Thirty-five patients were investigated. Estimations of 5 HT were made on washed platelets rather than platelet-rich plasma which has been used in previous studies. Three groups were recognized on the basis of platelet 5 HT values. The first group consisted of five subjects who were clinically asymptomatic at the time of investigation but died 24 to 48 hours later and were shown at autopsy to have deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; they had the highest level of platelet 5 HT. The second group comprised eight patients with cerebral thrombosis whose platelet 5 HT ranged between 1529 and 2183 ng/10-9. There were 22 subjects in the third group (11 apparently normal and 11 with different pathologies). Their platelet 5 HT ranged from 611 to 877 ng/10-9 and did not vary in the different pathological conditions studied. Since the highest level of platelet 5 HT was observed in patients prior to the formation or embolization of a thrombus, it is suggested that this may have some role in initiating thrombus formation.
Total Exchangeable Potassium (TEK) was measured in 31 elderly patients admitted to a geriatric assessment unit. The value in control cases ranged between 26 mEq/kg to 45.5 mEq/kg; the mean values for men and women were 35.5 mEq/kg and 28.4 mEq/kg, respectively. The test was repeated after one week in eight cases, the standard deviation between the two estimations ranged from 0.35 to 1.13 with the exception of one case which was 2.55. Estimations were made in six cases of myxoedema, the initial value was low and on treatment rose by 22.6 per cent to 36.4 per cent which coincided with the clinical improvement.

One hundred obstetric patients were studied for evidence of puerperal thromboembolic disease. Only one case of deep vein thrombosis was detected in patients thought to be in a "high risk" category because of age or operative intervention. Clinical findings were unreliable compared with measurements of (125)I-labelled fibrinogen uptake. Doppler ultrasound flow detection proved a simple screening technique but produced no abnormal findings in this series.

In the Cardiff Family Planning Association Clinic 330 men have been sterilized during the past 20 months. Selection for operation was made after a detailed discussion between husband, wife, and a Family Planning Association doctor, and with the general practitioner's agreement. The outpatient operation was performed under local anaesthetic by a surgeon. It was regarded as being successful or complete when two semen analyses showed azoospermia at an interval of one month.
