[Headache after spinal analgesia with reference to the type of analgesic agent used (author's transl)].

The incidence and localization of headache after spinal analgesia were studied by means of a questionnaire. The case material comprised 503 spinal analgesias carried out with a 4% hyperbaric and a 2% isobaric solution of mepivacaine respectively and with 0.5% isobaric solution of bupivacaine. The use of the 4% solution of mepivacaine was followed by an increased incidence of prolonged dull headache in the occipital region. The observations suggest that the occurrence of headache after spinal analgesia may also depend on the type of analgesic agent employed.

Intravenous short narcoses in geriatric patients, A comparative study of etomidate with various analgesics.

Because of their often complicated pathology, geriatric patients may present special problems to the anesthetist. Whereas the hazards of surgery have been diminished through specific pre- and posttreatment, the so-called short narcosis has failed as yet to fulfill the requirements of maximum safety for the patient. In our study, two potent analgesics, i.e. fentanyl or pentazocine are associated with the narcotic etomidate for short narcosis. The effects either combination has on cardiovascular or respiratory values during unassisted ventilation are studied. Both the fentanyl/etomidate combination and the pentazocine/etomidate combination are characterized by stable cardiovascular conditions. The unfavourable effect on spontaneous respiration is greater after fentanyl as compared with pentazocine. Combined anesthesia of pentazocine and etomidate remains safe an easy to perform when the patient breathes spontaneously. If fentanyl is used, assisted respiration with oxygen is required.

[Blockade of obturator reflex (author's transl)].

The obturator reflex is a frequent complication of the transurethral resection of bladder tumors, specially those localized at the side of bladder. The transurethral operation often must be interrupted, or changed into a transabdominal one, because of danger of bladder perforation or severe bleeding. In addition to spinal analgesia two techniques of obturator block are presented and their use is discussed.

[Should thrombendarterectomy of the superficial femoral artery still be practiced? (author's transl)].

112 subintimal dissections are follwed up over a period of 3 years. The results (67,6% patent at the end of the third year) come up to those of the saphenous vein bypass. The rate of secondary amputations (8%) is low, the mortality rate comes up to 3,6%. In our opinion thrombendarterectomy has satisfactory late results. There is no reason to abstain from it in favour of the vein bypass procedure.

Low-intensity two-step absorption of chlorophyll A in vivo.

The intensity-dependent transmission of primary leaves of Triticum aestivum seedlings at lambda = 694 nm was measured with single pulses of a Q-switch ruby laser. At photon flux densities above 2 x 10(17) cm-2s-1 a decrease of transmission was observed. The result is interpreted as a two-step absorption of cooperative units of 10(5)-10(6) chlorophyll molecules.

Influence of prostaglandins, prostaglandin-precursors and of a linoleic acid rich and free diet on the cardiac effects of isoprenaline and vasodilators.

In isolated auricle preparations of guinea pigs arachidonic acid diminished the increase in cardiac performance by isoprenaline in a similar way as PGE1 and propranolol. Long term pretreatment of rats with a linoleic acid (LA) supplemented diet increased in vivo the maximal systolic pressure and decreased the heart rate. In hearts in vitro the LA rich diet decreased the heart rate, increased the coronary flow and showed a tendency to enhance the contraction force. The release of cardiac prostaglandin-like substances was increased. Simultaneously the LA rich diet reduced the heart rate increase and the positive inotropic effect of isoprenaline without changing the increase in the coronary flow and without any effect on the heart performance of coronary vasodilators like oxyfedrine and prenylamine.

Influence of linoleic acid content of the diet on arterial pressure of salt loaded rats. I. Effects on prostaglandin metabolism and sympathetic nervous system.

1. Compared with linoleic acid rich and pellet diet linoleic acid free diet causes an increase in blood pressure in salt loaded rats. The blood pressure increasing effect of linoleic acid poor diet could not be augmented by linoleic acid free diet. 2. The blood pressure was increased by indomethacin in linoleic acid rich and pellet fed rats. In linoleic acid free fed animals indomethacin shows only a brief augmentation of blood pressure. 3. Prostaglandin (PG) biosynthesis was decreased in isolated kidneys and aorta but increased in the kidney medulla homogenate after a four-week linoleic acid free diet. 4.. Chemical sympathectomy by intracerebroventricular injections of 6-hydroxydopamine abolished the blood pressure increasing effect of linoleic acid free diet. We postulate that changes in the PG metabolism and in the activity of sympathetic nervous system are causes for the elevated blood pressure of linoleic acid free fed salt loaded rats and we conclude that the function of the cardiovascular system is influenced favourably by a linoleic acid rich diet.

Influence of linoleic acid in the diet on arterial pressure of salt loaded rats. II. Effects on plasma catecholamine concentration, renin activity, and reactivity of isolated vessels.

1. A linoleic acid free diet and indomethacin treatment induce an increase in the epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations in the plasma. 2. The renin activities in the kidney and plasma were increased by a linoleic acid free diet and decreased by indomethacin treatment. 3. The reactivity of isolated blood vessels to norepinephrine, angiotensin, PGE2 and PGA2 was intensified after linoleic acid free diet. Indomethacin treatment neutralized the differences between the different diet groups. We conclude that the increase in the sympathetic activity, in the renin activity and in the vasoreactivity after a linoleic acid free diet has promoted the elevation of blood pressure of salt loaded rats and that these prohypertensive changes have been caused by a diminished PG biosynthesis in kidneys and blood vessels.

The phenol oxidases of the ascomycete Podospora anserina. XII. Affinity of laccases II and III to substrates with different substitution patterns.

For the low molecular weight laccases II and III of Podospora anserina the kinetic parameters Michaelis constant (KM) and maximum reaction velocity (V) were determined polarographically under pH optimum conditions for representative substrates of different substitution patterns. Laccase II showed two peaks in its pH optimum curve, each with a different substrate specificity, indicating structural differences to laccase III which exhibits only one broad peak. Under optimum conditions the affinities of various substrates are determined by their substitution patterns: high affinity for simple o- and p-diphenols, low affinity for m-henols. The maximal velocity remains largely uninfluenced. This study of the effect of substitution on substrate utilization leads to the assumption that there is no specific reactive site for m-phenols in either laccase. Oxidation of m-phenols, however, takes only place at high pH values.
