[Calcium in the prevention of stress ulcer in the rat].

Calcium gluconate, carbonate, and lactate are potent antiulcerogenic agents when administered intragastrically at pH 6.3 by sustained infusion (45 mg/kg/8 h). In intact rats, by radioimmunologically measurable serum, gastrin and calcitonin are inversely correlated, whereas gastrin and ulcer index tend to correlate directly. The findings imply a key role for thyroid-releasable endogenous calcitonin in this disorder.

[Malignant nasal granuloma in a 12 year old boy (author's transl)].

Granuloma gangraenescens is placed between Wegener's granulomatosis and reticulum cell sarcoma. It is very difficult to diagnose due to absence of early symptoms as in this reported case, which was diagnosed histologically and which temporally responded to steroids and Imurek. Change histologically to a reticulum cell sarcoma has not been proven.

[Deterioration of the ileo-sacral joints through serious unilateral hip joint diseases (author's transl)].

Based on the clinical and radiological examinations of 95 patients with unilateral restricted movement of the hip, the deformities of ileosacral joint and symphysis are described. The pathological changes of ileosacral joints and symphysis could be demonstrated in cases with severe contractures of the hip. Low grade contractures under 15 degrees have been tolerated over many years.

[2 Kirschner wires as simplified external fixation devices in finger joint arthrosis].

A new technique for arthrodesis of the PIP joint is described; after resection of the joint two percutaneous Kirschner wires of diameter 1.2-1.3 mm are placed transversely through the two phalanges. The wires are twisted together on each side of the finger to produce a compression effect on the bone surface. Additional external immobilisation is used for five days only, but the wires are left in place for six weeks. The method has been used without complication in ten patients. The average length of time off work was seven and a half weeks. In the author's view the advantages of this method lie in its technical simplicity and in the free movement of other finger joints.

Non-invasive identification of chemical compounds by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, combined with chemometric methods of data evaluation.

Chemicals from customers' returns have to be analyzed before they can be reused as raw materials in production. A procedure for non-invasive qualitative analysis of compounds in a closed container based on energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry is described. EDXRF was chosen as method for noninvasive analysis of chemicals through PE bottle walls without opening the bottle. This analysis aims for a quick proof of correspondence between the declaration of a reagent on the label of the bottle and its content. This analytical result cannot be achieved by a mere evaluation of characteristic element lines in EDXRF-spectra in combination with the method of matrix correction or the method of mean atomic number. These methods take into account only a small part of the total information available in an X-ray spectrum. It is shown here that valuable additional information is extractable from the spectral ranges of the Compton-scattering and Rayleigh-scattering areas by the use of methods of multivariate data analysis, especially by principle component analysis (PCA). Regularized discriminant analysis (RDA) was employed to establish a classification scheme for unknown samples.

A survey of lead pollution in Chhattisgarh State, central India.

Lead (Pb) is of major environmental concern due to its toxicological importance. The anthropogenic emission of Pb is at least 100 times higher than natural emissions. Soil and dust are significant sources of Pb exposure. Lead is generally immobile in soil and accumulates in the upper layers. Lead particles may enter homes via shoes, clothes, pets, and windows. Central India is rich in deposits of natural resource materials such as coal, pyrite, dolomite, and alumina that contain Pb and other heavy metals at the trace levels, and the substantial exploitation of these materials has tended to increased contamination of water and geological formations. Here we present data on Pb concentrations in the water, soil and sediment samples (n=158) collected from 70 locations in Chhattisgarh state, Raipur region. Lead concentrations in the surface water (n=44), groundwater (n=44), soils (n=60) and sediments (n=10) ranged from 6 to 1410, 3 to 52, 12.8 to 545, and 31 to 423 microg g(-1), with mean values of 305, 16, 102 and 190 microg g(-1), respectively. Most of the Pb fractions of >80% can be leached out with the chemical extractants EDTA, acetic acid, and hydroxylamine hydrochloride. Lead has accumulated in the soil clay fraction due to its relatively large surface area and decreases with increasing depth in the soil profile.

Bacterial cell wall components as immunomodulators--I. Lipopeptides as adjuvants for parenteral and oral immunization.

We investigated the immunostimulatory properties of synthetically prepared lipopeptides derived from the cell wall of Gram negative bacteria. These compounds constitute potent macrophage activators and polyclonal B-lymphocyte stimulators. They are also immunoadjuvants in parenteral or oral immunization. By coupling the lipopeptides to haptens or low molecular weight antigens which are not immunogenic per se, highly immunogenic conjugates can be prepared. Lipopeptide antigen conjugates as synthetic vaccines give protection by enhancing the antibody-mediated immune response, and they stimulate the cellular immune response in vivo by priming of cytotoxic T-cells.
