1 The uricosuric effect of diflunisal was studied in eleven normal subjects. 2 Urine and serum uric acid levels were measured and used to assess the effect. 3 Diflunisal caused statistically significant decreases in serum uric acid levels and increases in uric acid clearance at 250 and 375 mg twice daily. 4 Diflunisal taken on an empty stomach caused epigastric discomfort in the high dose group which was obviated when the drug was taken with meals. 5 Diflunisal caused no abnormalities in the measured haematological, urological or biochemical parameters.
Although the clinical picture of autonomous adenoma of the thyroid gland has been well known for a long time, a series of connections has in some cases been unclarified, and in other cases contradictory so far. This applies in particular to the relationships between the scintigraphic image and the metabolic balance of the autonomous adenoma. In 98 patiets aged from 21 to 70 years old (80 women, 18 men) with autonomous adenoma unequivocally verified by suppression or stimulation test, it was therefore investigated whether such connections can be demonstrated. The following could be established: 1. In patients with an autonomous adenoma, there is an established connection between the scintigraphy image, the thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels in the serum as well as the delta-TSH. In patients with scintigraphically compensated autonomous adenomas, the hormone levels are all in the euthyroid range. In patients with scintigraphically decompensated autonomous adenoma, the values of thyroid hormones are found in some cases in the euthyroid, and in other cases in the hyperthyroid range. 2. Scintigraphically decompensated autonomous adenomas always display a negative TRH test, whereas this may be negative and in other cases also postivie in scintigraphically compensated autonomous adenomas. The TRH test may be negative in compensated and in decompensated autonomous adenoma even in patients in whom the thyroid hormone values in the serum are in the euthyroid range. The TRH test thus does not permit evaluation of the current functional activity of the autonomous adenoma. It is furthermore unsuitable for delimitation of a compensated from a decompensated autonomous adenoma as well as for different diagnosis between a nodular goiter and a scintigraphically compensated autonomous adenoma. 3. There is a statistically established relation between the size of the autonomous adenoma, the age of the patient as well as the thyroid hormone values. Autonomous adenomas accordingly become larger with increasing age. The values of thyroid hormones increase and lead to corresponding alterations in the TRH test.
This report deals with a new syndrome characterized by refractory anemia, an aberration of chromosome 5 (deletion of the long arm) and the subsequent appearance of acute myeloid leukemia. The results stress the importance of chromosomal studies in cases of unclear, long-lasting and therapy-resistant anemia, since they may allow the early recognition of the development of acute leukemia.
In community psychology the individuum-centred medical model of disease, which, as a rule, determines the psychological and psychotherapeutic work has superseded socio-psychological concepts and approaches. The authors describe the basic requirements for a psychosocial counselling service at a vocational retraining centre which is guided by community psychological ideas and principles. The article reviews the manifold problems of the rehabilitees, the comprehensive services and the efficiency of the intervention strategies recorded over a two-year period. Furthermore, the authors discuss their experiences with preventive measures in connection with both early detection and prevention of problems. Through its adjustment to the concept of community psychology the responsibilities of psychological and psychotherapeutic services within an institution obtain a considerably higher differentiated structure, and at the same time, meet the demands more adequatedly.
A hereditary disease in mink (Mustela vison Schreb.) leading to death when the affected kits are about six weeks old has been investigated. The disorder is inherited as a simple autosomal recessive character. Strongly elevated plasma tyrosine concentration is an outstanding feature of the disease. An enzyme defect in tyrosine aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.5) or 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (EC 1.13.11.27) is considered together with the possibility of a parallel between the disease in mink and the disease tyrosinosis or hereditary tyrosinemia in man.

From the emission rates of the bacterial cooling tower emission determined in field measurements (see Comm. II) the mortality rate of enterbacteria on soil, grass and solid surfaces and the mortality rate in the atmosphere taken from literature the immission rates and the long-term effect on microbial surface flora were calculated and compared with our own measurements. The values used in the calculations include large margins for error. The atmospheric germ counts determined by experiment were no higher than the calculated values; they fluctuated in terms of concentration between 20 KBE m-3 and 200 KBE m-3 in ranges which were measured in areas with little or no anthropogenic influences. The maximum long-term surface load which occurs under these assumptions is 2.3.10(5) KBE M-2. This relatively small additional load (approx. 10(-3%) would hardly be noticeable in a number of colonies of approximately 10(10) KBE m-2 normally occurring in soil and grass samples.
Quantitative scintigraphy of the heart after equilibrium distribution of a radioactive tracer permits the measurement of time activity curves in the left ventricle during a representative heart cycle with great statistical accuracy. In the range of ventricular volumes which usually occur, the time activity curve corresponds with sufficient accuracy to the ventricular volume variation during one heart cycle. In cardiological terms, the parameters ejection fraction as well as maximum rates of ejection and filling have proved useful for evaluation of hemodynamic performance. By application of Fourier's analysis, criteria are to be attained in addition for evaluation of the volume curve as a whole. Thus the entire information contained in the volume curve is completely described in a Fourier spectrum. Because of the statistical noise, the volume curves drawn up from scintigraphic techniques require smoothing procedures, especially in determination of the differential quotients of ejection and filling rate. Smoothing by means of sliding average procedures causes a systematic deformation of the systolic dip and other similar regions of the curve, since the curve smoothened in this way does not converge towards the original curve at these points. Resynthesis after Fouier transformation seems to be an ideal method of smoothing because of its convergence in the minimum quadratic error for the type of function concerned.
In 25 patients with angiographically proven coronary heart disease and in 15 patients without heart disease, gated cardiac blood pool scintigraphy was done with 15 mCi 99mTc-HSA in LAO projection. Scintigraphic data were collected in list mode by means of a gamma camera connected to a computer system (Siemens 330). A cumulative scintigram scintigram sequence with a time resolution of 100, 50 and 25 frames/sec was constructed using several hundred heart cycles of equal duration. After background correction volume curves of the left ventricle with a time resolution of 25, 50 and 100 Hz were obtained and the following parameters of these curves were compaired: ejection fraction, maximum ejection rate and maximum filling rate. It could be demonstrated that smoothing by sliding average requires a time resolution of at least 50 Hz, whereas in volume curves smoothed by Fourier-Analysis a time resolution of only 25 Hz is necessary. However, using a time resolution of 25 Hz, the course of the volume curve can not always be clearly demonstrated, so that time resolution of 50 Hz combined with Fourier-Analysis for the gated cardiac blood pool scintigraphy is preferred.
The effect of previous administration of vitamin B 12 on the Schilling test was examined in 10 patients, repeating the test during and 10 days after vitamin B 12 treatment. Under vitamin B 12 medication, the patients showed a significantly decreased vitamin B 12 urinary excretion. Ten days after vitamin B 12, repeat Schilling test demonstrated comparable results with baseline values except for one patient, who persistently had a low value.
The correlations between the ENR-test (Brengelmann and Brengelmann) and the VELA-test (Fahrenberg) result in a highly significant coincidence of the dimensions neuroticism and anatomic instability with the categories A until F or Kühn's questionnaire test of student's troubles (QST). The ENR- and VELA-tests are suitable as a screening for mass examinations. In therapeutic institutions engaging not especially with the problems of student's troubles and failness, these tests should be preferred, but in special psychological advisory centres for students Kühn's QST is indispensable.

The transformed properties of five hybrid cell lines which had either one or another parent in common were studied and compared with their tumorigenicity. Three hybrid cell lines, derived from the Chinese hamster DC-3F/ADX/Aza line, were resistant to actinomycin-D. This property seemed to be correlated with the presence of a marker chromosome from the common parent. The tumorigenicity was intermediate between those of the parent cell lines. On the other hand, agglutinability by concanavalin A (Con A) was variable. Three hybrid cell lines which had either the A9 or the clone 1D (both derived from mouse fibroblasts) showed very similar transformed characteristics, but two were tumorigenic and one not so. It appears from this study that the properties of the hybrid cell lines can be influenced more by one parent, depending on the genes retained at chromosome segregation. The limits of Con A agglutination as a characteristic of transformation and the validity of the check pouch grafts as tumorigenicity test for malignant human cell lines are discussed.
Intravenous administration of ethchlorvynol (Placidyl) is known to produce noncardiogenic pulmonary edema in animals and humans. Since intrapulmonary sequestration of leukocytes has been observed to occur following injection of ethchlorvynol, we evaluated the role of these elements of the blood in producing pulmonary edema. In vivo studies in dogs showed intrapulmonary trapping of leukocytes, as evidenced by increasing leukocyte differences between blood from the pulmonary artery and arterial blood. In both animals with normal leukocyte counts and those depleted of leukocytes (less than 500 cells per millimeter), pulmonary edema occurred, as evidenced by increased pulmonary water after injection of ethchlorvynol. Preparations of isolated lung perfused with either whole blood or leukocyte-poor plasma had similar gains in weight following injection of ethchlorvynol, in spite of marked differences in leukocyte counts. We conclude that intrapulmonary sequestered leukocytes do not play a role in ethchlorvynol-induced pulmonary edema.
A double-blind placebo controlled crossover study was performed in twelve healthy volunteers receiving multiple doses of naproxen (250 mg b.i.d.) and diflunisal (250 mg b.i.d.) to study the effect of diflunisal co-administration on the naproxen levels in plasma and urine. The naproxen steady-state level was reached between the second and the third day. The peak plasma level appeared about 2 hr after drug administration and varied from 68 to 75 microgram/ml. This maximum was not modified by a simultaneous administration of diflunisal neither in its position nor in its intensity. Statistical analysis using a parametric method, did not reveal a significant influence of diflunisal on the plasma kinetics or on the urinary elimination of naproxen.
This paper is concerned with the measurement of first order rate constants for the death of bacteria by chlorine and ozone. While the first order conditions for chlorine were achieved with the aid of a new instrument which works basing on the polarographic principle this was attained for ozone under steady state conditions. Besides differences of species some different properties for both oxidants were found as far as their bactericidal efficiency is concerned. They are discussed in this paper.
