In 79 consecutive cases of skeletal tuberculosis the concentration of streptomycin and ethambutol was analysed. The material for analysis was obtained from the diseased joints of 14 patients and from cold abscesses from spinal or osseous lesions in 65 patients. The concentration of the drugs in the serum and in the tuberculous material was measured 3 hours after the systemic administration of the drugs in therapeutic doses. The concentration was expressed as microgram per ml of the tuberculous material and the data were subjected to statistical analysis. Streptomycin and ethambutol penetrated freely into the tuberculous joints; their concentration in the cold abscesses, however, was half to one third of the concentration in the serum. There was a wide range of concentrations; however, in the tuberculous joints as well as in the cold abscesses the concentrations were much higher than those considered to have an inhibitory effect on mycobacterium tuberculosis in clinical material.
A study on the microbial agents in the stools of 344 infants and young children (206 diarrhoeal and 138 nondiarrhoeal) was carried out. The diarrhoeal group comprised of 120 hospitalised cases and 86 from a community. The numbers of nondiarrhoeal subjects of matching age taken from the same hospital and community were 50 and 88 respectively. It was revealed that bacteria (50-9%), parasites (11-7%), and C. albicans (2-4%) accounted for 65 per cent of the diarrhoea cases, 6-8 per cent having mixed infections. The largest number of cases had EEC followed by P. aeruginosa, Shige-la, V. cholerae, and A, hydrophila and of the parasites G. intestinalis was followed by E. histolytica in order of frequency. Enteropathogenic bacteria and parasites were encountered in 13-0 per cent and 34.8 per cent of the nondiarrhoeal subjects respectively, 7-2 per cent having mixed infections. This group also had EEC as the commonest bacteria and A. lumbricoides was the most prevalent parasite. Except for V. cholerae, A. hydrophila and C. albicans no significant difference was observed in the microbial spectra amongst the diarrhoeal cases in the hospital or community. In the nondiarrhoeal subjects both groups showed a similar prevalence pattern. Incidence of bacterial pathogens was significantly higher in children below two years and intestinal parasites were three times more common in older children.

Aeromonas hydrophila was enteropathogenic in ligated ileal loops of rabbits, causing a fluid accumulation of 1-0 - 2-0 ml per cm of gut length. Gut reaction could be produced with an inoculum as low as 10-4 viable bacteria. There was no difference in the nature of the positive reactions given by strains isolated from diarrhoeal and non-diarrhoeal children and adults and from water. Plesiomonas shigelloides, on the other hand, did nt cause a significant gut reaction. A. hydrophila multiplied in the ileal loop by about 10-5 wheras P. shigelloides did so at only 10-2-3. These experiments on a animal model thus indicated the enteropathogenic nature of A. hydrophilia, but no definite conclusion could be drawn from this study on P. shigelloides.
In the present experimental study the role of lysozyme drops in healing of corneal ulcer of staphylococcal origin (sensitive to chloramphenicol) was studied on 16 albino rabbits. In 8 rabbits, in one eye placibo drops (distilled water) and in the other eye lysozyme 1% were put 4 times daily. In the other 8 rabbits, in one eye chloramphenicol drops 0.4% and in the other eye chloramphenicol drops 0.4% + lysozyme drops 1% were instilled 4 times daily. It was observed that the rate of healing of corneal ulcer was much earlier in the eyes which had local instillation of chloramphenicol drops + lysozyme in comparison to the eyes which had only chloramphenicol drops, lysozyme drops, or distilled water.
