The transport of K+ and H+ (both expressed as mueq/h) by in vitro chambered bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) gastric mucosa have been studied under a variety of conditions such as anoxia, addition of p-chloromercuribenzene sulfonic acid (PCMBS) into the secretory solution, inclusion of ouabain in the nutrient solution, addition of thiocyanate (SCN-) into the mucosal solution, and replacement of nutrient chloride (Cl-) with sulfate (SO4(2-)), or gluconate (Gl). Anoxia reversibly reduced the H+ transport close to zero within 15 min and gradually reduces the K+ transport throughout the 2-h period of anoxia. The presence of 2.5 X 10(-4) M mucosal PCMBS in the histamine-stimulated mucosa increases the K+ transport, which is promptly reduced by changing the gas phase to 95% N2-5% CO2. Addition of ouabain to the nutrient solution of the histamine-stimulated mucosa with PCMBS on the mucosal side significantly (P < 0.05) reduces the K+ transport within 60 min. Addition of SCN- to the mucosal solution of a histamine-stimulated mucosa with regular nutrient or O, K+ nutrient and 10, K+ mucosal solution reduces the H+ transport to near zero within 60 min. This SCN- inhibition can be reversed by elevating secretory K+. Substitution of nutrient Cl- with SO4(2-) or Gl in the histamine-stimulated mucosa reversibly inhibits H+ transport and reduces K+ transport to a low level (0.7 +/- 0.05). Our data suggest that the K+ transport across the apical membranes of gastric cells is to a large extent a passive carrier-mediated process, and the transport of both K+ and Cl- are coupled at the apical membrane.
Four patients with an unusual type of bone lesion are reported. The histological diagnosis in two of them was non-specific chronic inflammation and one case was diagnosed as chronic eosinophilic granuloma. On subjecting the material to culture Mycobacterium Kansasii (a photochromogen) were isolated. It is suggested that M. Kansasii are capable of producing osteoarticular lesions with a rather vague clinical and radiological picture not typical of osteoarticular tuberculosis.
Cell-mediated immune status was assessed in twenty patients of advanced and active lymphoreticular malignancies and twenty control subjects of comparable age and sex distribution by delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity responses to recall and contact antigens and peripheral blood lymphocyte counts. The results show depressed cellular immunity in both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients. However, the severity of immunological dysfunction as shown by anergy to skin antigens and lymphocytopaenia is remarkably less than what has been mostly reported in the literature.

Cell-mediated immune responses as expressed by delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity (DCH) reactions to specific recall antigens (PPD and BCG) and non-specific contact antigen (DNCB), and peripheral blood lymphocyte counts were studied in 60 patients of gastrointestinal cancer and 20 control subjects. The pattern of these immune responses in gastrointestinal cancer was significantly different from tumour-free control subjects of comparable age and sex distribution and apparently indicates a depressed immunologic function in cancer patients. Our study suggests that DNCB skin testing and peripheral blood lymphocyte counts are relatively simple and reliable investigations for predicting the advanced stage of gastrointestinal cancer (and BBY implication prognosis).
The K+-stimulated ATPase associated with the purified gastric microsomal fraction can be completely inactivated by treatment with 15% (v/v) ethanol for 60s at 37 degrees C, but not at 25 degrees C. Sequential exposure of the microsomal fraction to 15% ethanol at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C caused release of 2.5% and 2.9% of the total membrane phospholipids respectively. Restoration of the enzyme activity was achieved by sonication with phosphatidylcholine in the presence of Mg2+, K+ and ATP, which were essential for the reconstitution. Our data suggest that the phospholipids extracted by 15% ethanol at 37 degrees C are derived primarily from the immediate lipid environment of the enzyme, and ATP, together with the metal ions, helps the partially delipidated enzyme to retain the appropriate configuration for the subsequent reconstitution.

Studies were conducted on the decoction of the bark of Albizzia lebbeck which has been in use by Ayurvedic physicians for bronchial asthma and eczema. The effect of A. lebbeck was studied on the degranulation rate of sensitized peritoneal mast cells of albino rats when challenged with antigen (horse serum). Triple vaccine was used as adjuvant. Disodium cromoglycate (DCG) and prednisolone were used for comparison. Drugs were given during the first or second week of sensitization and the mast cells studied at the end of the second or third week. Serum from these rats was used to passively sensitize recipient rats whose peritoneal mast cells were then studied. The in vitro effects of A. lebbeck and DCG on the degranulation rate of the sensitized mast cells were also studied. The results show that A. lebbeck has a significant cromoglycate-like action on the mast cells. In addition, it appears that it inhibits the early processes of sensitization and synthesis of reaginic-type antibodies. If A. lebbeck is given during the first week of sensitization it markedly inhibits the early sensitizing processes, while if given during the second week it suppresses antibody production during the period of drug administration. The active ingredients of the bark appear to be heat-stable and water-soluble.

Parasitological investigations carried out on 324 subjects of symptomatic and asymptomatic amoebiasis showed that formol-ether concentration was a superior technique than examination of 3 consecutive stool specimens by direct microscopy in cases of colitis, hepatitis and cyst passers. Culture of pus yielded better results than the other techniques for examination of stool in cases of liver abscess. Indirect haemagglutination test carried out with 238 sera from cases confirmed to be either positive or negative for Entamoeba histolytica revealed good correlation of its results with parasitological investigations in cases of dysentery and hepatitis. This test proved to be much superior to parasitological investigations in diagnosis of liver abscess. A close correlation between the results of gel-diffusion and I.H.A. was observed in dysentery and liver abscess groups, although I.H.A. was more sensitive. Precipitin band appeared in gel-diffusion test only when the I.H.A. titre was 1: 486 and the number of bands increased with rise in the titre.

A comparative study of the mitochondrial lipid composition of a wild strain (V 35) and a respiratory-deficient mutant (rd3) of Aspergillus niger grown at different temperatures (25, 30, 35, and 40 degrees C) has been performed. The lipid spectrum, though qualitatively similar, differs quantitatively in both cases. At the optimum growth temperature (30 degrees C) depletion in ergosterol (40%) and cardiolipin (52%) was observed. This probably indicates the formation of defective mitochondria in the mutant with a resultant impaired respiratory system. Complete depletion of cardiolipin species containing fatty acid (20:5omega3) in the respiratory-deficient mutant suggests a possible role of this lipid in mitochondriogenesis at least in A. niger. The effect of temperature is predominantly on the degree of unsaturation and sterol ester formation. The linoleic acid (18:2omega6) content decreases with a concomitant increase in oleic acid (18:1omega9) content as the growth temperature increases for both cell types. Some morphological changes and effects on the vegetative life cycle have been observed with variation in growth temperature in the wild type and also in the mutant form.
