[Blood coagulation indices of turkey poults experimentally infected with Eimeria adenoeides].

Studied were the changes, taking place in the thrombocytes, the cephalin-kaolin time, the fibrinogen, the prothrombin time, the presence and the quantity of the soluble fibrin monomer complexes. Used were 70 3-week-old turkey poults, divided into two groups--experimental and control. It was established that up to the 24th hour after the invasion no serious changes were observed. Changes take place on the 48th, 72nd, 96th and 120th hour, after the invasion, characterizing the disseminated intravascular coagulation. Most typical are the changes on the 96th and 120th hour after the invasion, which express in decreasing the number of thrombocytes and the quantity of fibrinogen and in increasing the content of the soluble fibrin monomer complexes.

The 18- to 23-kb deletion of the Macedonian delta beta-thalassemia includes the entire delta and beta globin genes.

Restriction endonuclease mapping analyses were made of DNA from a few members of a Macedonian family with hematological characteristics of delta beta-thalassemia, ie, microcytosis, normal HbA2 levels, and elevated levels of HbF (7% to 14%) with G gamma (average 40.5%) and A gamma T chains (average 59.5%). A large deletion of 18 to 23 kb was present with a 5' breakpoint within a 670-bp segment of DNA between the HpaI and NcoI restriction sites 5' to the delta globin gene, and a 3' breakpoint between the BamHI and HpaI restriction sites located some 9 to 13 kb 3' to the beta globin gene. This deletion is different from those present in other types of G gamma A gamma(delta beta)zero-thalassemia. The similarity of the hematological expression of these delta beta-thalassemic conditions which have somewhat comparable 5' breakpoints supports the idea that an important fetal hemoglobin-controlling region lies between the psi beta and delta globin genes.

[Mastocytes in the human intestinal mucosa].

A method has been for counting the mastocytes on 0.1 mm2 of intestinal mucosa in patients with chronic enterocolitis, gluten enteropathy, ulcerous colitis in a stage of exacerbation and in controls. The comparison of the results obtained in the separate groups of patients reveal an increased number of mastocytes in gluten enteropathy--mean = 21.01 +/- 6 as compared with the chronic enterocolitis, where mean = 9.79 +/- 3.83 (p = 0.002). Higher values of mastocytes in rectal mucosa were observed in the patients with ulcerous mucosa--mean = 15.83 +/- 4.49 as compared with the control subjects with means = 3.67 +/- 0.99 (p = 0.001). those data admit the participation of mastocytes in the morbid process in patients with gluten enteropathy and with ulcerous colitis.

Haplotypes and levels of fetal hemoglobin and G gamma to A gamma ratios in Mediterranean patients with thalassemia minor and major.

This study concerned the gamma chain composition of Hb F and the haplotypes of 44 patients with beta-thalassemia major or intermedia and many of their relatives. Seventeen patients came from Northern (Turkish) Cyprus, 12 from the Istanbul area, and 15 from Macedonia and Bulgaria. Analysis of the A gamma T-G gamma-A gamma I ratio was made by HPLC, while haplotyping involved seven restriction sites. Specific haplotypes were present in certain populations; haplotype I [1] is the dominant type among North Cypriot thalassemia patients. Numerous types were seen in the patients from the Balkan countries. A direct relationship between the A gamma to G gamma ratios and the haplotypes, which exists among black beta-thalassemia heterozygotes [3], was also observed among these Mediterranean patients, although such analyses were considerably complicated by extensive blood transfusion therapy. Haplotypes without the Hinc II restriction site within the psi beta gene were associated with lower G gamma values than those that had this polymorphic site. The A gamma T chain was observed in a small number of beta-thalassemia homozygotes and heterozygotes. Three thalassemia chromosomes with slightly different haplotypes and one normal chromosome with a related haplotype were associated with the gamma 75 Ile----Thr substitution. A few patients with a thalassemia intermedia were heterozygotes for beta-thalassemia with either haplotypes V or VII [1] while the "nonthalassemic" chromosome had a haplotype I, which is the most common "beta-thalassemic" haplotype among the Mediterranean population(s). Detailed analyses of this chromosome have not been completed.

[Parallel morphological, enzyme and immunological research on the jejunal mucosa in patients with gluten enteropathy, chronic nonspecific enteritis and ulcerative colitis].

The results are reported from the study on 120 patients, 30 of them with gluten enteropathy, 50--with chronic unspecified enteritis and 40--with chronic ulcerous colitis. Small intestinal aspiration biopsy was performed to all patients with histomorphological, electron microscopic, enzymatic and immune-fluorescent study. The secretory immunoglobulins in the jejunal juice were studied in 40 patients. Morphological changes, various degrees, were established, that correlate with the increased number of IgG and IgM secretory cells. The exclusion of gluten from the diet in case of gluten enteropathy was followed by normalization of the number and percentage ratio of IgSC and of secretory immunoglobulins. The enzymatic and immune disorders, in chronic unspecific enteritis correlate with the electron microscopic and precede the histologic ones. The role of immune system of small intestine in the etiology and pathogenesis of the various intestinal diseases is discussed.

[Small intestine perfusion. The authors' own method for the simultaneous performance of biopsy and perfusion of the human small intestine].

The analysis of advantages and disadvantages of the technique and principles of the methods of small intestinal perfusion, used by various authors in the studies on resorption processes, provided grounds the authors to develop their own method. The system for infusion and aspiration by a combined probe is described. Details about the composition of perfusion solution, the technique of the study and calculation of resorption rate are reported. The advantages of the method are as follows: simultaneous performance of small intestinal glucose perfusion and biopsy of small intestine, good tolerance by the patients and availability of the elements needed for the construction of the probe and system for infusion and aspiration. The mean glucose resorption rate was 814,07 mumol/min/30 cm in 9 subjects with no small intestinal diseases and with normal histomorphological picture of small intestinal mucosa.

[Parallel morphological and functional research on chronic enterocolitis patients using the authors' own method for the simultaneous performance of perfusion and biopsy of the small intestine].

Thirty two patients were studied with chronic enterocolitis and 9 patients without any small intestinal diseases, with normal histomorphological picture of small intestinal mucosa--control group. The method of simultaneous performance of perfusion and biopsy of small intestine was used. Glucose resorption rate in small intestine was studied and histomorphological, electron--microscopic and enzymologic (disaccharidases) studies were carried out on jejunal mucosa. Data about chronic enterocolitis without atrophy were established in 17 patients, in 10--initial partial atrophy, in 5--advanced partial and subtotal atrophy of jejunal mucosa. Reduced glucose resorption rate was established in small intestine in the patients with chronic enterocolitis as compared with that of the control group. Glucose resorption rate correlates with the severity of the histomorphological changes in small intestinal mucosa. Disturbed resorption rate was established via jejuno--perfusion in patients with clinically not manifested syndrome of malresorption and absence of histomorphological changes in small intestinal mucosa, but with established ultrastructural changes in enterocytes.
