Local blood flow of the bowel wall was measured by hydrogen clearance method both in the muscular and submucosal layers in the mongrel dog, separately and concurrently. A platinum wire electrode with a bare tip of 0.5 mm in length and 0.2 mm in diameter was inserted into the each layer. About 10 per cent hydrogen gas was inhalated directly through the side hole attached to the endotracheal tube for 1-2 minutes and the obtained clearance curves were plotted on the semi-logarithmic scale, which was almost monoexponential. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Mean basal perfusion rate of the muscular layer of the intestine was 0.81-0.92 ml/min/gm, whereas that of the submucosal layer was 1.29-1.31 ml/min/gm, respectively. There was little difference of perfusion rates between the small and the large intestine. The results showed good correlationship with those reported by other authors. 2) The effect of vasoactive substances such as vasoconstrictor and vasodilator on the local blood flow in the bowel wall was confirmed. 3) This method is repeatedly applicable for measurement and also renders the information on the distribution of blood flow in the splanchnic area.

In a previous paper the authors described the morphologic observations that the concomitant administration of ACTH and flavin-adenine dinucleotide (FAD) to hypophysectomized rats exerted a more potent preventive effect on atrophy of the adrenal cortex of the animals than the single administration of ACTH. The present study was made to electron-microscopically observe the effect of concomitant administration of ACTH and FAD on atrophy of the adrenal cortex induced with the administration of dexamethasone (Dx). The zona fasciculata of the adrenal gland of rats treated with Dx+ACTH+FAD was morphologically closer in cell organelles such as smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and chylomicrons to that of control animals than the counterpart of animals treated with Dx+ACTH only. The zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex of animals treated with Dx+FAD was morphologically similar to that of animals treated with Dx only. These findings suggested that FAD would potentiate the adrenocorticotropic action of ACTH through its physiologic action.

Silicone rubber is conventionally used as a lining soft material for denture base. However it still has some properties to be improved, such as poor adhesive strenth with acrylic resin, discoloration, degradation and growth of candida. We attempted to apply chemically-stable polyfluoroethylene-copolymers for this purpose. The terpolymers consisting of difluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene (or hexafluoropropylene) were prepared and tested for tensile strenth, adhesive strength to acrylic resin, water sorption, contact angle, shore hardness, and toxicity by hemolysis test, cell culture test and extraction test. One of the selected terpolymer showed less water sorption (0.1 mg/cm2), stronger tensile strength (160 kg/cm2) and adhesive strength (110 kg/cm2) than the silicone rubber lining material. The toxicity test results suggested that the terpolymer will pose a low potential acute toxicity in vivo. All the test results seem to suggest that the polyfluoroethylene elastomer described here is a promising soft liner material for denture base.

Cyclazocine, a benzomorphan derivative, suppressed the flexor reflex of the hind-limb of intact rats induced by intra-arterial injection of bradykinin, a potent pain-producing substance, in a dose-dependent manner, without remarkable influence on motor performance. This suppressive effect was antagonized by naloxone, a specific opiate antagonist. The ED50 values for cyclazocine were 0.054 mg/kg s.c., 5.6 mg/kg p.o., and 1/27, 1/11 of those for pentazocine by the respective routes of administration. In spinal rats, however, the inhibitory effect of cyclazocine and pentazocine on the bradykinin-induced flexor reflex was markedly reduced. Furthermore, cyclazocine as well as pentazocine selectively inhibited the EEG arousal response induced by electrical stimulation of the tooth pulp, which elicits the single sensation of pain. These results indicate that cyclazocine in doses used had a specific analgesic action, and that the main site of action probably is in the supra-spinal structures, such as seen in the case of pentazocine.

A long-term cell culture of human glioblastoma was investigated microscopically, virologically, and biochemically. Reverse transcriptase activity was detected in cultured human glioblastoma cells. 3H uridine was incorporated into particles of buoyant density at 1.07 g/ml (Ficoll) which is equal to that of Oncorna virus particles, but 3H thymidine was not incorporated at all. Furthermore, reverse transcriptase activity was also demonstrated with the particles, suggesting that the cultured human glioblastoma cells were producing type C Oncorna virus. Ultrastructural observations of cell culture of glioblastoma showed type C virus particles in cisternae and culture medium. Budding of the virus was also seen on the surface of the cell. The mean diameter of the particles was approximately 100 nm. Ca. 1.1 nm of spikes protruded from the envelope. Both types of virions were observed, i.e. the doughnut-shaped type form and the solid circular form.
