The paper sets out the arguments in favour of utilising both a 'strict' definition corresponding to the 'nuclear' concept of schizophrenia and a 'broader' definition that also subsumes 'atypical' schizophreniform and related syndromes. Evidence is adduced rejecting the view that attempts to effect a complete separation between 'nuclear' and other forms of schizophrenic disorders based on phenomenological, hereditary, prognostic, etiological and other lines. Both the unity and the diversity of the schizophrenic family of disorders must be given explicit recognition in clinical and scientific work. The value of the 'nuclear' concept has been demonstrated by the IPSS study among other enquiries. The advantages of the broad definition are twofold. It makes for a flexibility and openness of approach in diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia that are indespensable at the present time. The value of the 'broad' definition is that it encompasses a range of phenomena that have been shown to be related to one another. They may therefore be compared and contrasted. It is argued that new knowledge about the etiology of schizophrenia may be acquired in this manner. Tentative definitions for the 'nuclear' and 'broad' groups of disorder are given.

Dipeptidyl carboxypeptidase (angiotensin I converting enzyme) was purified from human seminal plasma. The apparent relative molecular mass determined by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 was 330 000. The pI in isoelectric focusing was 4.6--5.0 and the optimum pH 7.7--8.0. The enzyme is activated by chloride. These properties are similar to those reported for the lung enzyme. The specificity is that of a carboxypeptidase releasing dipeptides. A study of different substrates showed the activity to be highest with Z-Leu-Gly-Gly, followed by Z-Phe-His-Leu greater than bradykinin greater than Bz-Gly-Gly-Gly greater than Boc-Phe-Ala-Pro greater than Bz-Gly-His-Leu greater than angiotensin I.
A selective and sensitive assay of hydroxyproline in blood plasma is presented. The technique uses ion exchange chromatography followed by reaction with 7-chloro-4-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD choloride) and continuous recording of the resulting fluorescence (gamma ex=465 nm, gamma fl=535 nm). Proline and prolyl-and hydroxyprolyl-peptides can also be measured by this system. For hydroxy proline, the method is more sensitive than procedures using ninhydrin or p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde.

This paper is concerned with the use of multivariate statistical methods in relation to classification in psychiatry. There are two aspects of classification: the classification of symptoms to form syndromes and of patients into diagnostic groups. Critical papers are reviewed, and proposed severe limitations on the methods answered. The use of multivariate methods has increased objectivity and agreement between investigators, but differences remain, largely on issues in statistical logic, which must be resolved.

Severe deformities of the hind limb skeleton such as shortening, abnormal curvatures, terminal expansions, curled toes and joint dislocations were produced in frog tadpoles by the osteolathyrogenic principle. Gross-anatomical features of the deformed skeleton and of the respective nervous trunks were studied in specimens cleared according to WILLIAMS' technique. The findings support the previously suggested osteo-neural concept: Experimental skeletal deformities represent adaptations of the bone growth at the organ level to the inadequate extensive growth of the nervous trunks. The neural growth appears to be more severely affected by the teratogen than the bone growth proper.
