Rats which had received two doses of inactivated Sendai virus vaccine were resistant to intranasal virus challenge. Vaccination was equally effective when administered by intravenous, intraperitoneal, intramuscular, or subcutaneous routes but not the intranasal route. Rats vaccinated intraperitoneally with inactivated Sendai virus vaccine were protected from contact infection. Suckling rats born to vaccinated dams were resistant to challenge infection at 3 weeks of age, but the resistance was not demonstrated after weaning at 4 weeks of age.

A 72-year-old male noted weakness in the right lower extremity in August 1979, and clumsiness of the finger movement in the right hand in April 1980. In June 1980, he became tetraplegic and was unable to stand or walk. He also developed hypesthesia in the four extremities and difficulty in voiding. On admission to this hospital (July 12, 1980), neurological examination showed spastic tetraparesis, more pronounced on the right side. Deep tendon reflexes were markedly increased in the four extremities. Chaddock reflex in the right lower extremity and Trömner reflex in the both upper extremities were elicited. Hypesthesia below the level of C4 was present with anesthesia in the Th9-11 region. Plain film and tomogram of the cervical spine showed ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament from C3 to C6 and a lobulated nodular calcification in the posterior part of the spinal canal at the level of C4,5 intervertebral space. CT scan revealed nodular calcifications in the ligamentum flavum not only at the level of C4 but also at the level of C6. Laminectomy from C3 to C6 was performed on August 21. The ligamentum flavum with nodular calcifications was removed. His postoperative course was uneventful. Seven weeks postoperatively the patient was able to walk without assistance and had no difficulty in voiding. He was discharged on October 14 with excellent activities of daily life. The content of the nodular calcification was identified as a kind of calcium phosphate by the physico-chemical analysis. Ossification and/or calcification of the ligamentum flavum in the cervical spine is rare, while ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament is frequently encountered in the cervical spine. Only two cases with nodular calcification of ligamentum flavum in the cervical spine have been reported. To our knowledge, this is the first case of the nodular calcification of the ligamentum flavum in the cervical spine associated with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. Two dimensional analysis by CT scan was very useful in locating the lesion and deciding the operative procedure.
Five cases of subdural hematoma from arterial rupture (SDH-AR) are described and other 39 reported cases are reviewed. The average age of the patient is 59 and male to female ratio is 2:1. Fifty two percent of the patients have history of recent head injuries most of which are trivial. A very few patient have initial loss of consciousness. Approximately half of the patients with history of head trauma have long lucid interval (average of 7 days). Those patients without history of head trauma have spontaneous onset of the symptoms and some of the have acute onset of headache and loss of consciousness, simulating cerebrovascular accident. Natural history of the SDH-AR is progressing deterioration of the symptoms, resulting in coma and death. Skull fracture is seldom demonstrated in the patients with SDH-AR. Angiography shows and extracerebral avascular mass over the cerebral convexity with marked midline shift. In 3 cases including our 2 cases, extravasation of the contrast medium from the cortical artery is observed and this is a useful finding for making diagnosis of this disease. Computerized tomography reveals high density extracerebral mass with remarkable mass effect. Craniotomy discloses subdural clot and spurting arterial rupture from a branch of the cortical artery around the Sylvian fissure. In some cases, subarachnoid hemorrhage is observed but in none of the cases, cerebral contusion or laceration is present. It is presumed that the mechanism of the arterial rupture is gliding movement of the brain within the skull upon injury, tearing an arterial twig with dural attachment. Hypertension, arteriosclerosis and brain atrophy may be important contributing factors to this mechanism. Pseudoaneurysm of the cortical artery caused by closed head injury is also associated with this mechanism and may explain delayed sudden onset of the symptoms in some patients with SDH-AR.
A case of an epidermoid cyst in the frontal base which showed homogeneous high density in noncontrast computed tomography, simulating a meningioma with calcification, is reported. Operative findings and histological examination suggested that this high density was caused by spontaneous hemorrhage into the cyst.
We assessed the effects of a pared diet (20, 60 or 150 g/day for days 6-20 after coitus) on the course of pregnancy in rabbits. Dams receiving 20 g/day manifested a marked weight loss, 5 of 6 animals aborted and in the remaining dam, the litter size, fetal and placental weight were significantly lower than in the controls. In the 60 g/day group, the maternal body weight remained stable throughout the observation period; the number of dead embryos on fetuses was significantly higher, that of liver fetuses lower, than in he controls. Feedings on the 150 g/day group did not markedly differ from the controls, indicating that pregnant rabbits require at least 150 g of food/day.
A 45-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman with cryptic vascular malformations of the choroid plexus in the lateral ventricle are reported. Each patient had an intraventricular hematoma, located in the right trigone and in the anterior part of the left lateral ventricle, respectively. The vascular lesion of one patient was angiographically visualized as find abnormal vessels communicating with the right anterior choroidal artery; in the other, angiography did not reveal the lesion. In the former patient, histological examination of the excised specimen led to a diagnosis of arteriovenous malformation; in the latter, a diagnosis of venous malformation was made. Both patients were successfully treated surgically.
When guinea pigs received a single intramuscular injection of sisomicin (25 mg/kg) at week 8 of pregnancy, fetal sisomicin concentration at 2 h was highest in the kidneys, followed by the plasma and the cochlea; at 4 h it was not detected in the plasma or the cochlea. When dams were treated with 25 mg/kg during weeks 1-5 of pregnancy, fetal sisomicin concentration in the kidneys was 9 times greater than in the cochlea; in 3-week-old animals, a drug concentration of 4 microgram/g was detected only in the kidneys. When dams were treated during weeks 5-9 of pregnancy, the neonatal drug concentration was highest in the kidneys and the cochlea; no plasma concentration was detected. At 3 weeks of age, the concentration was highest in the kidneys and the cochlea. When lactating dams received sisomicin, only kidneys of suckling animals contained sisomicin at 0.4 microgram/g.
Food and water intake and the excretion of urine and faecal pellets during the day (0500-2100) and at night (2100-0500) were observed in Afghan pikas, rats and guineapigs fed appropriate diets. Urine composition was observed in these species after they had been fed the pika diet for 4 weeks. Rats ate more at night than did pikas or guineapigs. The pikas excreted numerous small, hard faeces and soft faeces, the latter being reingested. On the pika diet all species gained about 10% in bodyweight. Food consumption was similar to that shown by each species on its own diet. All animals fed the pika diet excreted alkaline urine. Chloride concentration in pika urine was similar to that of the rat and was significantly higher than that of the guineapig. The ratio of sodium to potassium in pika urine was 2.8 and 1.7 fold that of the rat and guineapig respectively. Osmolality of pika urine was slightly higher than that of the rat, and was 3.8 fold that of the guineapig.
Binding proteins for 1.25 (OH) 2D3 were investigated in thirty breast cancers. Human breast cancer was shown to contain specific, high affinity cytosol binding proteins for 1.25 (OH) 2D3 and 25 (OH) D3. The binding protein for 1.25 (OH) 2D3 sedimented at 3.7 S and the binding protein for 25 (OH) D3 at about 6.0 S on sucrose density gradient analysis containing 0.3 M KCl and 1 mM dithiothreitol in buffer. Kd for 1.25 (OH) 2D3 were from 0.1 x 10(-11) M to 7.1 x 10(-11) M measured by Scatchard plots. Competition binding studies indicated that the relative specificity of the binding protein for 1.25 (OH) 2D3 much greater than 25 (OH) D3 greater than 1 alpha (OH) D3, 24,25 (OH)2D3 greater than D3 much greater than Estradiol-17 beta. 1.25 (OH) 2D3 receptor-positive was detected in twenty-eight out of thirty breast cancers.
Adult male and female rats were inoculated with tween 80-ethylether-formalin-ultraviolet inactivated Sendai virus (Sv-V) and examined for the production of hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibody. There were no significant differences in the antibody titers between males and females, and among the various routes of inoculation except for the intranasal which was not effective. The antibody became detectable 7 days after a single inoculation with 10(5) HAU of Sv-V. The antibody titer, which had its peak 21 days after the inoculation, persisted for 200 days and declined gradually thereafter. The HI antibody titers were correlated with inoculated Sv-V doses and a predominant booster reaction with the vaccine was observed. Maternal antibodies were detected in sucklings born to dams hyperimmunized with the vaccine. The titers were similar to those of the dams until 3 weeks after birth but declined rapidly after weaning at 4-week-old. The titers of fetuses and neonates before suckling were significantly lower than those of the sucklings.
