[A case of retroperitoneal lymphangioma successfully treated by pancreatoduodenectomy].

A rare case of retroperitoneal lymphangioma in 44-year-old male complaining of high fever and right hypochondralgia is reported. Retroperitoneal malignant tumor was suspected preoperatively, and pancreatoduodenectomy was performed because the tumor infiltrated to duodenum and head of the pancreas. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor was lymphangioma infiltrating to the duodenum. There are two types of lymphangioma, solitary lymphatic cyst and true proliferating lymphangioma and in this case, the tumor is diagnosed as true proliferating lymphangioma which is cavernous and infiltrating.

[Synergistic effects of human recombinant TNF and hyperthermia on in vitro cytotoxicity and artificial metastases].

Synergistic effects of hyperthermia on the cytotoxicity of TNF were examined, using L-M cells (mouse tumorigenic fibroblasts) and HEL cells (human embryonic lung cells) as targets. The sensitivity of L-M cells to TNF apparently increased when the culture temperature was raised from 37 degrees C to 38.5 degrees C or 40 degrees C, probably reflecting the increased turnover rate of the TNF-receptor complex. The anti-metastatic effects of a combined regimen of TNF (300U) and whole-body hyperthermia (40 degrees C, 30 min) was also examined in Balb/c mice injected with 1 X 10(6) Meth A F15 cells into a tail vein. No effects of TNF or hyperthermia alone were observed on artificial metastasis, while the combination of TNF and hyperthermia remarkably enhanced the inhibition of metastasis. These studies clearly suggest that combination of TNF with hyperthermia provides a significant synergistic effect against tumor.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone in dried blood spotted on filter paper.

In this rapid, cost-effective, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) eluted from dried blood spotted on filter paper, second antibody is coated onto the microwell plate and horseradish peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) is the label enzyme. Antiserum to 17-OHP was prepared by using 4-(2-carboxymethylthio)-17-OHP-bovine serum albumin conjugate as immunogen. Enzyme conjugate was prepared from 4-(2-carboxymethylthio)-17-OHP and peroxidase. The blood spots are assayed in the microwells without extraction or centrifugation steps. The detection limit of the assay is 1 microgram/L, equivalent to 3.5 pg (10.6 fmol) per disc. Intra- and interassay CVs at two steroid concentrations (7.38 and 22.79 micrograms/L) ranged from 3.74 to 11.90% (n = 5), and 9.49 and 9.83% (n = 5), respectively. Results correlated well (r = 0.91) with those of a fluorescence enzyme immunoassay. The sensitivity, specificity, and precision of this method make it potentially useful in the mass screening of neonates for congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

[The synergistic effect of human recombinant TNF in combination with various anti-cancer drugs].

The synergistic effect of human recombinant TNF in combination with various anti-cancer drugs was examined in vitro. In vitro treatment of L-M cells with TNF and mitomycin C (MMC), adriamycin (ADM), cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C), actinomycin D (ACD), daunorubicin (DM), cisplatin (CDDP), vincristine (VCR), or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) revealed a synergistic cytotoxicity. However, the combination of TNF with bleomycin (BLM) failed to show such a synergistic effect.

[Assessment of surgical treatments of medullary thyroid carcinoma by analysis of serum calcitonin levels].

In 67 patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma, serum calcitonin levels were measured before (S1) and after (S2) surgical therapy. Doubling time of serum calcitonin levels (T2) was calculated in each patient with elevated calcitonin levels after surgery. Residual tumor weight (W2) was estimated as W1S2/S1-S2) where W1 was resected tumor weight. Reduction index (alpha) is defined as S2/S1 = (1/2) alpha. alpha T2 indicates expected prolongation in survival (EPS) by surgical therapy. Expected duration of survival after surgery (EDS) is estimated as beta T2, where beta times of doubling of the residual tumor (W2) make 1000 g of tumor which would generally kill the host. Death within 3 years after surgery or recurrence within 5 years was best associated with short EPS followed by short T2 or small alpha. Postoperative calcitonin levels had a rather weak correlation with the prognosis, and preoperative calcitonin levels had almost no correlation with the prognosis during the present observation period. All 3 patients with EDS shorter than 3.9 years died within 2 years and 2 months after surgery. These parameters allow quantitative judgement of the surgical benefit and quantitative prediction of the prognosis in each individual patient.
