[Chemotherapy of chronic myelogenous leukemia in blastic crisis--vindesine, cytosine arabinoside prednisolone combination therapy].

Twenty patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia in terminal transformation were treated with regimen incorporating vindesine, prednisolone and additional cytosine arabinoside. Of the 19 patients in blastic crisis, complete remission was achieved in 13 (68.4%). All four patients with lymphoid morphology, and nine of the eleven patients with myeloid morphology, achieved complete remission (81.8%); the four with monocytoid morphology did not. One patient in accelerated phase also attained complete remission. The present results indicate that the regimen incorporating vindesine-cytosine arabinoside-prednisolone should be treatment of choice in CML-BC with lymphoid morphology and myeloid morphology as well.

A recognizable pattern of the midface of retinoblastoma patients with interstitial deletion of 13q.

In our study, we found a recognizable pattern of the midface in three retinoblastoma patients with interstitial deletion of chromosome 13 in lymphocytes. Further photographs of patients reported by other authors confirmed our conclusion that the midface in children with interstitial deletion of 13q from q12 to q22, always involving q14, is characterized by prominent eyebrows, broad nasal bridge, bulbous tip of the nose, a large mouth with a thin upper lip, and a long philtrum. This midface pattern could not be recognized in patients with normal karyotypes, suggesting that the critical segment for the midface phenotype as well as for retinoblastoma may exist in band 13q14.

Retinoblastoma in a boy with a de novo mutation of a 13/18 translocation: the assumption that the retinoblastoma locus is at 13q141, particularly at the distal portion of it.

In serial cytogenetic examinations of peripheral lymphocytes from retinoblastoma patients, we found a patient with sporadic bilateral retinoblastoma with a de novo mutation of a 13/18 translocation, with their respective breakpoints at 13q141 and 18q122. The simultaneous de novo occurrence of retinoblastoma and the chromosomal rearrangement involving 13q14 in the proband suggests that the gene locus for retinoblastoma is at 13q141, particularly at the distal portion of it. Deletion mapping data are compatible with this suggestion.

Serum dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP) IV activities in oral cancer patients.

Dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP) IV activities in normal human sera and in the sera of patients with malignant tumors of the oral region were assayed. Patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma had significantly lower enzyme activity than that of normal controls (p less than 0.001). Patients with advanced carcinoma showed a more significant reduction of serum enzyme activity. On the other hand, in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients with hepatic dysfunction, the serum enzyme activity was significantly increased (p less than 0.02).

[Genetics and some characterization of C6 deficiency in rabbits (author's transl)].

C6 deficient rabbits were found in a breed of Angora rabbits reared in Japan. The genetic studies confirmed that this complement deficiency was transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait. Alloimmunization of the deficient rabbits with normal rabbit serum produced a specific antibody to C6 component. This antiserum cross-reacted against human, cattle, sheep, goat, pig, dog, guinea pig and mouse serum, but not to horse, hamster and chicken serum. The C6 levels in the sera of Angora rabbits, measured by the single radial immunodiffusion method using the alloantiserum, were distributed in three distinct group; normal, about half of normal and null level. The C6 level in the sera of F1 rabbits (C6+/-), crosses between C6 deficient Angora rabbit (C6-/-) and New Zealand White rabbit (C6+/+), was about half of normal level. These results suggested that the level of C6 in the sera was under the dosage effect of C6 deficient gene.

Carboquone therapy for hematologic neoplasms.

A daily oral dose of 1-2 mg of Carboquone was administered for remission induction to 38 patients with hematologic malignancy, and the following results were obtained: 2 of the 3 patients with malignant lymphoma, 1 of the 12 patients with multiple myeloma, 13 of the 14 patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia, and all 9 patients with polycythemia vera attained complete remission.
