The localization of contents and activities of components of cytochrome P-450-linked mixed function oxidase system and the hydroxylation of steroids in mitochondria and microsomes within zones of adrenocortices was investigated. NADPH-adrenodoxin reductase activity was higher in the zona glomerulosa than in the other zones. Adrenodoxin content was present at high concentration in the zona fasciculata. The localization of cytochrome P-450 within zones of adrenocortices has already been reported (Ichikawa, Y., Kuroda, M. and Yamano, T. (1970) J. Cell Biol 45, 640--653). The zona fasciculata contained more mitochondrial and microsomal cytochromes P-450 than the zona glomerulosa or zona reticularis. Cleavage activity of the side chain of cholesterol was found in three zones. However, particularly high activity was observed in the zona fasciculata and zona reticularis. 11beta-Hydroxylation was found in the zona glomerulosa. 21-Hydroxylation activity was especially higher in the zona fasciculata than in the other zones.
Twenty-three adolescent schizophrenics were studied in regard to the problems of the course of illness, prognosis and defect. Illustrations of cases (follow-up for three to 15 years) were presented. 1) The course was considered chiefly from the viewpoint of positive symptoms, namely paranoid-hallucinatory experiences. It was divided into the following four categories; remittent, persistent, scanty and fading types. At the same time, general characteristics of each type were discussed. 2) As to the changes in clinical forms, hebephrenia was gradually manifested in more than half of the cases. There were some cases in which the expansion of paranoid activities were observed. These two prominent tendencies might be explained in terms of personality disintegration and maturation. We were impressed, in this regard, that autistic tendencies and behavior disturbances were more manifest in the initial stages in patients who later turned more hebephrenic. 3) A mild defect was observed in fourteen cases, while a medium or severe defect was recognized in eight cases. Generally, the degree of defect seemed to be more manifest in female patients than in males. Moreover, the defect was generally more severe in early adolescent cases and in patients with insidious onsets as well as in those with a longer duration of illness than in mid-adolescent patients and those with acute onsets and a shorter duration of illness. 4) As the result of this investigation, it was substantiated that the prognosis in adolescent schizophrenia, especially in early adolescence, was unfavorable. 5) Finally, we were impressed by the fact that there were many patients who were treated mainly in ambulatory clinics or who stayed at home in spite of the above-mentioned unfavorable prognosis.
Twenty-three cases of adolescent atypical psychosis were reported, of which 12 were followed for more than three years (at the longest about 18 years). Our cases indicated apparent atypicalness in regard to the symptomatology and to the course, quite different from cyclothymic psychosis and schizophrenia. In an etiological point of view, hereditary predispositions were more frequently recognized in our cases than in schizophrenic cases, but because schizophrenics were found in the families of these patients, it was difficult for us to determine whether our cases belonged to an etiologically independent endogenous psychosis. However, we received the impression that atypical psychosis could be differentiated from others even in adolescents. But this psychosis was seldom found in childhood. While, through the comparison of these patients with adult cases and by considering previous research, we were led to the assumption that adolescent atypical psychosis might be understood as a minor pattern of the fully-developed psychosis in adults but was provided with many properties specific to adolescense.

The fine structure of the goldfish olfactory epithelium was studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Six different cell types were distinguished. Identification of the olfactory receptor cell was accomplished by use of retrograde degeneration studies. Two morphologically distinct types of olfactory receptor cells were identified: one type bears radially oriented cilia (Type I cell); the other type bears microvilli (Type II cell). The other four cell types were not identifiable as olfactory receptor cells: they are ciliated cells (Type III), rod-shaped cells (Type IV), supporting cells (Type V), and basal cells (Type VI).

The present study was designed to produce the experimental carcinoma of the biliary tract in dogs. Tube cholecystostomy was constructed in 8 mongrel dogs and 5-10 ml of 0.7-1.0 mg/ml solution of N-ethyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (ENNG) was administered through the tube every day for the maximum period of 180 days. As the results: The experiment had to be cut off in 7 dogs (5 dogs: The tube was inadvertently pulled out. 2 dogs: died of general weakness). Pathological changes were observed in one dog given ENNG for 180 days and sacrificed at 372 days after the beginning of the experiment. Macroscopically, scattered foci of flat elevation of the mucosa were observed in the entire mucosal surface of common bile duct and a tiny polypoid lesion at the terminal protion. A tiny polypoid projection was adenocarcinoma confined to the mucosa, and areas of flat elevation showed marked hyperplasia of mucosa with partial atypical proliferation. No remarkable findings were noted in other organs.
The gastric acid output was studied in the 11 patients of hyperparathyroidism before and after parathyroidectomy. The gastric acid output before operation was almost equal to the normal control in our hospital. After the correction of serum calcium by parathyroidectomy, the gastric acid output and serum gastrin were decreased. The decreased gastric acid output was recovered as the days passed since operation and approached to the preoperative level. The acid output in hyperparathyroidism was less in the case whose activity of alkaline phosphatase was more, which suggested that the calcium deposition on gastric mucosa might damage the parietal cell as the result of long lasting hypercalcemia.

The carcinogenicity of 2-(2-furyl)-3-(5-nitro-5-furyl)acrylamide (AF-2) was investigated by administering it orally to Sprague-Dawley female weanling rats in a grain diet at a dose of 0.2% for 46 weeks, followed by 20 weeks of unmedicated control diet. The total mean cumulative dose of AF-2 was 10.1 g (41.6 mmol) per rat during the 46 weeks of the experiment. Weight gains of rats fed AF-2 was comparable to that of unmedicated control rats. Survival of rats fed AF-2 was 52 +/- 12 (SD) weeds compared to 65 +/- 5 weeks for the unmedicated controls (P less than 0.001). Twenty-four of 29 rats fed AF-2 developed multiple breast tumors, 15 of which were adenocarcinomas. Two of 29 unmedicated control rats had single fibroadenomas of the breast.
Ultrastructural studies have aided in identifying the principal cell types and the layers of the olfactory bulb in goldfish. The concentrically arranged four layers are: the primary olfactory nerve layer (most peripheral), the glomerular layer, the mitral cell layer, and the granule cell layer (deepest). Three types of cell bodies were differentiated by their size and cytoplasmic organelles: mitral cells, granule cells and short axon cells. The axons of the primary olfactory nerve formed synaptic contacts with mitral cell dendrites in the glomeruli. Reciprocal synapses were observed between the granule cell dendrites and the mitral cell dendrites in the mitral cell layer. Terminals of the centrifugal fibers forming synaptic contacts with the granule cell dendrites were identified in the granule cell layer. The relationships between the cellular and synaptic organizations and the neural mechanism of olfaction are discussed.
