Epithelial hyperplasia of the larynx. A 10-year review of 88 patients.

A retrospective review of 88 patients with epithelial hyperplasia of the larynx seen at the Department of Otolaryngology Kurume University during the 10-year period from 1971 to 1980 was completed. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The incidence was much higher in males (78 patients) than in females (10 patients). 2) The average age was 56.8 years. 3) The lesion was located on the vocal fold in 84 cases, the ventricular fold in 3, and both vocal and ventricular folds in 1. 4) Fifty-three patients underwent surgical treatments in our hospital. Three of them developed recurrence and 6 developed carcinoma. 5) On histological re-examination, the lesions were classified into three types: simple hyperplasia (Type I), dysplasia (Type II) and carcinoma (Type III). No relationship was found between the macroscopic appearance and the histological type.

Trauma of the larynx and cervical trachea. A 10-year review of 51 patients.

Trauma of the larynx and trachea is not a common condition. But once it happens, the management is not simple. This condition has been calling attention of physicians also because iatrogenic traumas have been increasing. In the 10-year period from 1971 to 1980, 51 patients with trauma of the larynx and/or the cervical trachea were treated in the Department of Otolaryngology, Kurume University Hospital. The purpose of this paper is to review these patients and to discuss the treatment of this difficult condition.

Conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of voice in treating patients with carcinoma of the larynx. A 10-year review of 244 patients.

We reviewed clinical records of 244 patients with carcinoma of the larynx treated during the 10 years from 1971 to 1980 in the Department of Otolaryngology, Kurume University Hospital. Of the 244 patients, 111 patients (45.5%) were treated with their voice conserved and 133 underwent total laryngectomy. In the latter, information on the modality of speech communication was obtained from 73 patients. Forty-nine (67%) of these 73 patients was able to speak by some means but the remaining 24 (33%) had no means to speak.

[Experimental study on the action mechanism of a new bronchodilator agent, BB-1502].

The action mechanism of the bronchodilator activity of BB-1502 was studied in comparison with aminophylline. Orally administered BB-1502 did not inhibit passive cutaneous anaphylaxis in rats, an immediate allergic reaction of Type I, but strongly protected the same antigen-mediated anaphylactic asthma by the intraduodenal route, the activity being approximately 13 times more potent than that of aminophylline. BB-1502 also inhibited IgG-mediated anaphylactic asthma in guinea pigs by the oral route. Both IgE- and IgG-mediated histamine releases from rat lung were similarly inhibited by BB-1502, the potency being 2--3 times that of aminophylline. Disodium cromoglycate showed specific inhibition of the IgE-mediated reaction. BB-1502 and aminophylline showed nonspecific inhibition of the spasms of guinea pig ileum elicited by histamine, acetylcholine and BaCl2. Both compounds inhibited cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP phosphodiesterases (PDEs) derived from guinea pig organs. BB-1502 specifically inhibited the cyclic AMP PDE of lung and brain origins, while aminophylline showed no such specificity. The results of the present study suggested that the bronchodilator and anti-asthmatic actions of BB-1502 might, at least in part, be due to the regulation of cyclic nucleotide PDEs.

[An autopsy case of pancreatic cancer with carcinoid tumor of the appendix].

A 78-year-old man with pancreatic carcinoma with carcinoid tumor of the appendix is reported. Upon autopsy, the tumor consisted of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with scirrhous-like spreading. In the appendix a carcinoid tumor, size measuring 2 mm X 1 mm, was seen; the carcinoid cells were argentaffin.

Urea polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of PCMB precipitate as a sensitive test for the detection of the unstable hemoglobin subunit.

A sensitive test for the detection of the abnormal subunit of unstable hemoglobins is described. The unstable hemoglobin subunit was selectively precipitated by paramercuribenzoic acid treatment of the carboxy hemolysate, and the precipitate was studied by urea polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for globin composition. The test enabled the detection of an electrophoretically silent, alpha-chain unstable variant comprising only 1% of total hemoglobin. Other applications included the demonstration of Hb Köln in a cord blood, and the detection and purification of very slightly unstable hemoglobin variants.

Topographic electroencephalographic study of cerebral infarction using computed mapping of the EEG.

Computed mapping of the electroencephalogram (CME) is a newly developed method using a microcomputer system that displays the scalp topograph as the square roots of the average power spectra over each EEG frequency band on a color television screen. This new device has been employed in an examination of functional lesions in 20 patients with aphasia due to cerebral infarction. The results were compared with those of computer tomography (CT) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) studies using intracarotid 133Xe. A high-voltage focus of slow components and an asymmetrical distribution of alpha activity were regarded as signs of functional lesions on CME. Twelve patients showed high-voltage foci and six showed asymmetrical alpha activity on CME, which correlated well with the lesions on CT and/or rCBF studies. Especially in patients with motor aphasia, CME demonstrated the abnormality in advance of the appearance of a low-density area on CT. Compared with conventional EEG interpretation, CME is very useful in topographic and objective diagnosis of functional lesions, although the source of the data is the same as for the conventional EEG.

Hybrid ATPase's formed from subunits of coupling factor F1's of Escherichia coli and thermophilic bacterium PS3.

ATPase complexes were reconstituted from homologous and heterologous combinations of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits of coupling factor ATPase TF1 of thermophilic bacterium PS3 and EF1 of Escherichia coli. TF1 and alpha beta gamma complex reconstituted from TF1 subunits were thermostable and activated by methanol, sodium dodecyl sulfate and anions and they were halophilic, whereas EF1 and its three-subunit complex did not show these properties. The hybrid ATPase alpha T beta T gamma E (complex of the alpha and beta subunits of TF1 and the gamma subunit of EF1) showed closely similar properties to TF1 except for thermostability, while alpha E beta E gamma T (alpha and beta from EF1 and gamma from TF1) had similar properties to EF1. These results suggest that alpha and/or beta is required for the properties of F1. The complex alpha E beta T gamma E showed similar properties to EF1 except for its optimum pH: this complex had a broad pH optimum at about pH 7, whereas EF1 had an optimum at pH 8.5. No hybrid complexes were thermostable, suggesting that all three subunits of TF1 are required for heat stability. These hybrids showed higher halophilicity than EF1, although they were less halophilic than TF1. The hybrid enzymes studied here are the first thermophilic-mesophilic hybrid enzymes obtained.

Mass fragmentographic determination of homovanillic acid in individual dopaminergic neuron systems of rat brain: application of reaction gas chromatography.

Homovanillic acid (HVA) levels of 12 discrete rat brain areas were determined by a mass fragmentographic method using the reaction gas chromatographic technique. The use of reaction gas chromatography increased the sensitivity for determination of HVA. The sensitivity of this method allows measurement of HVA in small amounts of brain tissue. The HVA levels in polar, medial, and lateral fields of prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, septum, amygdala, A12, A13, and A14 dopaminergic neurons were 0.417 +/- 0.018 ng/mg protein, 0.689 +/- 0.004, 0.753 +/- 0.024, 0.496 +/- 0.029, 1.311 +/- 0.046, 0.555 +/- 0.008, 1.949 +/- 0.077, 1.109 +/- 0.112, and 0.489 +/- 0.019, respectively. The HVA levels in these areas are first reported in the present paper.
