Lethal catatonia.

Lethal catatonia, a life-threatening febrile neuropsychiatric disorder, was widely reported in this country and abroad before the introduction of modern psychopharmacologic treatments. A comprehensive review of the world literature indicates that although the prevalence of lethal catatonia may have declined, it continues to occur, now reported primarily in the foreign literature. Lack of recognition probably accounts for the scarcity of recent American reports. Furthermore, lethal catatonia is a syndrome rather than a specific disease and may develop in association with both functional and organic illnesses. Familiarity with the clinical features and varied etiologies is essential for effective management of this catastrophic reaction.

[Sialylated Lewis x as a tumor-associated antigen in stomach cancer].

Sialylated Lewis (S-Lex) has been studied histologically and serologically in stomach cancer by the CSLEX1 monoclonal antibody. S-Lex was expressed in 73.9% of 46 stomach cancer tissues, 29.4% of metaplastic parts adjacent to cancer, and none of six gastric ulcer tissues including metaplasia. Serologically positive percentages were as follows: 26.0% of 100 stomach cancers, 0.9% of 322 benign diseases, and 0.7% of 280 healthy donors in the sera, as well as 72.4% of 29 ascites of stomach cancers and 5.3% of 17 effusions of benign diseases. These findings demonstrate that S-Lex possesses a potential usefulness as a tumor marker in stomach cancer.

Primary structures of adult hemoglobins of silvery marmoset, Callithrix argentatus, and cotton-headed tamarin, Saguinus oedipus.

Tryptic peptides of the alpha and beta chains from silvery marmoset (Callithrix argentatus) and cotton-headed tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) hemoglobins were isolated and sequenced, respectively, by conventional methods. The ordering of the peptides in each chain was deduced from the homology of their sequences with those of human adult hemoglobin. The primary structures thus deduced are compared with those of other primate hemoglobins, and the rate of evolution in New World monkey hemoglobins is discussed.

An N-acetylmuramidase induced by PL-1 phage infection of Lactobacillus casei.

A lytic enzyme was isolated and purified from PL-1 phage-induced lysates of the host Lactobacillus casei ATCC 27092. The molecular weight of the enzyme was about 30000. Maximum activity on the lysis of the host cell walls occurred at pH 6.0-6.5 and at 45 degrees C. The enzyme activity was inhibited by heavy metal ions, SH- and serine-enzyme inhibitors and o-phenanthroline. The reducing end of the enzymic digest was muramic acid and the enzyme was considered to be an endo-N-acetylmuramidase. However, the enzyme differed from the other known N-acetylmuramidases including hen's egg-white lysozyme in several enzymic properties.

[Epidemiological studies on multiple primary malignant tumors in Nagasaki City].

Ninety-four cases of multiple primary malignant tumors registered at the Nagasaki Tumor Registry during the period from 1973-1977 were studied. The crude incidence rate tended to be higher in atomic bomb survivors although the difference was not significant. The male:female ratio was 1:1.19. Cases in the sixth decade of life were dominant, the average age was somewhat lower in females than in males. Stomach cancer was observed in 48 patients (51.1%; triple malignancies in 8 cases (8.5%).

Studies on the structure of a novel peptide antibiotic, K-582.

A novel peptide antibiotic, K-582, which exhibited significant growth inhibition of Candida, viruses and ascites tumor in mice, was found in the culture medium of a strain of Metarhizium anisopliae by Kondo et al. (J. Antibiotics 33, 535-542 (1980) ]. K-582 consisted of two components, designated K-582 A and K-582 B. Threonine, tyrosine, ornithine, and an unusual amino acid were common in both peptides, but lysine was an extra component of K-582 A. The unusual amino acid was identified to be threo-gamma-hydroxy-L-arginine (OHArg) by means of mass, nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectrometries of the derivatives and the related compounds. The threonine and the arginine were assigned to be L-configuration, and the ornithine and the tyrosine to be D-configuration in both K-582 A and K-582 B, and the lysine to be L-configuration by comparison of their optical rotatory dispersion spectra with those of standard amino acids. The elucidation of primary structure revealed that they were closely related heptapeptides with the following sequence: K-582 A:H-Arg-OHArg-Orn-Thr-Orn-Lys-Tyr-OH; K-582 B:H-Arg-OHArg-Orn-Thr-Orn-OHArg-Tyr-OH, and had the identical sequence in terms of the configuration of their constituents, namely L-L-D-L-D-L-D.

[Case of simultaneous triple cancers of the duodenal papilla, gallbladder and stomach].

The patient was a 76-year-old man with simultaneous triple cancer arising in the duodenal papilla, gallbladder and stomach, whose complaint was epigastralgia. Endoscopic and radiologic studies revealed early gastric cancer (IIc) at the posterior wall of the antrum; ERCP disclosed obstruction with "apple core" appearance in the distal bile duct. Pancreaticoduodenectomy, cholecystectomy and distal gastrectomy with lymph node dissection were performed. Histopathological examination of the resected specimens revealed papillo-tubular adenocarcinoma in the duodenal papilla, well differetiated tubular adenocarcinoma in the gallbladder, and moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma in the gastric mucosa.
