[Imaging of the bronchial blood flow usingg RI-angiography--study on its procedure and application of dual radioisotope technique (author's transl)].

RI-angiography with 99mTcO4- was carried out using a scintillation camera with a digital minicomputer for the purpose of imaging of bronchial blood flow in various lung diseases, and as application of dual radioisotope techniques, other imagings such as tumor imaging with 197HgCl2 or 67Ga-citrate and/or perfusion imaging with 99mTc-MAA, were performed simultaneously in patients remaining the same position, too. The image as a iso-count map extracted out of the image of 197HgCl2, 67Ga-citrate or 99mTc-MAA, was superimposed to the brightness image of RI-anigogram (aortic phase). By these procedures, the image of bronchial blood flow were obtained in some patients with lung cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, lung abscess, and chronic bronchitis. The dual radioisotope techniques using RI-angiography and the other imaging were useful to make isotope diagnosis of lung diseases more reliable, and the image superimposition methods using RI-angiogram and the image of tumor or perfusion, were useful to improve anatomic orientation of the former.

Evaluation of standard decompression schedule by agarose gel method.

The Standard Decompression Schedule was evaluated by the method of bubble formation in agarose gel, the result of which can be summarized as follows: 1) The number of bubbles formed in agarose gel corresponded well with the exposed pressure. 2) The technique of this method was simple and the number of bubbles was accurately counted. 3) Eventually, this method was useful for examining the decompression schedules. 4) It is not always safe to follow the Standard Decompression Schedule in some pressure conditions. 5) As to the period of time that a person is able to tolerate a high pressure condition, the prescription of the Standard Decompression Schedule is not necessarily correct. 6) The number of bubbles was small by the proper decompression schedule, for example, in the cases of exposure above the 60-meter depth of water. 7) This method can be applied for the prevention of decompression sickness when the agarose gel samples are attached to the workers during the compressed air work. 8) The number of bubbles was inconsistent with the coefficient of body pressure (1. N2 in the body), therefore it is not necessarily safe to rely only on the coefficient of body pressure. 9) To prevent osteonecrosis, the Standard Decompression Schedule is not proper, a deeper first stop and slower ascent being recommended.

[Myocardial imaging with thallium-201--subtraction imaging with 201TlCl and 99mTcO4- for the visualization of the right ventricle--(author's transl)].

The dual radioisotope techniques with 201TlCl and 99mTcO4- were performed in 30 cases inclusive of various heart and lung diseases, using a scintillation camera coupling to a small digital computer. The scintigraphic procedures were started about 5 minutes after intravenous injection of 201TlCl. The myocardial images such as anterior, 60 degrees left anterior oblique, and left lateral view, were obtained. Next, 30 degrees left anterior oblique view was taken and radionuclide angiogram with 99mTcO4- was done in the same position too. This joint use of the myocardial imaging and radionuclide angiography could increase diagnostic reliability. Superimposing the image as iso-count map extracted out of radionuclide angiogram to the brightness image of 201TlCl, the anatomic orientation of the image of 201TlCl was improved. Subtracting the blood pool image with 99mTcO4- or radionuclide angiogram, which showed visualization of the right ventricle, lungs and left ventricle, from the image of 201TlCl, the subtraction image was obtained. The right ventricle was visualized more clearly on this subtraction image than the original image of 201TlCl. Good visualization of the right ventricle was shown in 25 cases on the subtraction image, and in 17 cases on the original image of 201TlCl.

Dietary intake and the risk of coronary heart disease in Japanese men living in Hawaii.

The relationship of dietary intakes to subsequent development of coronary heart disease (CHD) during a 6-year follow-up period was investigated in 7705 men of Japanese ancestry, ages 45 to 68 and living in Hawaii. Data on the intakes of calories and nutrients were obtained by 24-hr diet recall interviews at the base-line examination. An index for ingestion of traditional Japanese diet (Japanese diet score) was also calculated for each man. The men who subsequently developed myocardial infarction or died of CHD generally ate less than those who remained free of CHD, with statistically significant differences for total calories, total carbohydrate, complex carbohydrate or starch, simple carbohydrate other than sucrose, vegetable protein, alcohol, and Japanese diet score. However, when other major risk factors for CHD were taken into account, the negative association with CHD remained statistically significant only for alcohol and, to a lesser extent, total carbohydrate intakes. The lower total caloric intakes in CHD cases, largely due to decreased alcohol and carbohydrate intakes, could not be accounted for by either under-reporting of food consumption among obese men or diminished physical activity in CHD cases.

Cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes. VII. cellular origin of alpha-lymphotoxin.

To detect the cellular origins of alpha-lymphotoxin (alpha-LT), we cultured various subpopulations of human blood lymphocytes separated by erythrocyte-rosetting techniques with various mitogens. T cell-enriched subpopulations responded to PHA by increased 3H-thymidine uptake into DNA and large amounts of alpha-LT production. SPL and Con A-Sepharose stimulated DNA synthesis in T cell-enriched cultures if the macrophage content was greater than 1.5%; however, alpha-LT production was not induced by these two mitogens even when reconstituted with 10% macrophages. B and/or null cell-enriched populations severely depleted of T cells (less than 0.7% did not respond to PHA, SPL, or Con A-Sepharose. However, reconstitution to 5 or more percent in E-RFC allowed all three mitogens to stimulate DNA synthesis and alpha-LT production. The LT made by all cell populations 5 and 7 days after stimulation were equally neutralized by a heterologous antiserum to alpha-LT. These results show that human T and B and/or null cells, when appropriately stimulated, can produce alpha-LT.

[Talampicillin hydrochloride: Comparison with amoxicillin and ampicillin in the antibacterial activity and pharmacokinetics (author's transl)].

The antibacterial activities, absorption and excretion of talampicillin hydrochloride were compared with those of amoxicillin and ampicillin. Talampicillin hydrochloride showed a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as seen in amoxicillin and ampicillin. The antibacterial activities of talampicillin hydrochloride, amoxicillin and ampicillin were quite similar. In experimental murine infection with Staphylococcus aureus, protective effect of talampicillin hydrochloride was superior to ampicillin. For Escherichia coli infection, protective effect of talampicillin hydrochloride was similar to that of amoxicillin, while ampicillin was less active than both talampicillin hydrochloride and amoxicillin. The absorption and excretion of 250 mg equivalent doses of talampicillin hydrochloride, amoxicillin and ampicillin were compared in nine fasting healthy volunteers after oral administration of these antibiotics in randomized triple crossover study. In order to calculate the pharmacokinetic parameters, plasma levels were analyzed using an one-compartment open model, as well as area under the plasma concentration curve (AUC) and urinary excretion. Maximum plasma levels calculated were 2.8 times higher for talampicillin hydrochloride and 1.45 times higher for amoxicillin than for ampicillin. AUC was greater for talampicillin hydrochloride than for amoxicillin and lowest for ampicillin. Urinary excretion of talampicillin hydrochloride as penicillin determined in biological assay was comparable to that of amoxicillin and 1.55 times higher than that of ampicillin. Penicillins can be metabolized to penicilloic acids in the body. After taking into account the penicilloic acid contents in urine, total excretion in urine was 61% for talampicillin hydrochloride, 67% for amoxicillin and 42% for ampicillin during 6 hours after dosing. The absorption of the drugs was evaluated according to the plasma levels, the area under plasma concentration curve and the percentage of excretion in urine. The results obtained showed that talampicillin hydrochloride was well absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract.
