Cardiac arrest in the spawning chum salmon.

1. Cardiac activities of male and female spawning chum salmon were recorded simultaneously by using a radio telemetry system in combination with a wired system. 2. Heart beat stopped during a spawning bout for about 10 sec in female and for 4-6 sec in male. 3. Just before and after the temporary cardiac arrest, heart rate increased from the usual rate, about 50 to about 60 beats per min. 4. It is suggested that the cessation of heart beat might be a reflex response of the cardiovascular system to the hypertension at spawning.

Early changes of hematopoietic tissues in mice treated with intravenous pulse-doses of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene.

Repeated intravenous injections of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (abbr. DMBA), four times weekly, induced several kinds of tumors in 26 mice (83.9%) out of 31 ddO mice, including 13 leukemias and 6 ovarian tumors. All leukemias were of lymphatic type, and 8 cases out of 13 leukemias were of thymus type. The thymus was involved by leukemic cells in 12 cases. All ovarian tumors were diagnosed as granulosa cell tumors histologically. During the treatment of DMBA, two types of changes in organs and blood were observed: one was a striking decrease of weight or organs or number of cells followed by prompt recovery as found in the spleen, red blood cells, and granulocytes in the peripheral blood; the other was moderate but long-standing decrease with little recovery as found in the thymus, ovaries, uterus, and lymphocytes in the peripheral blood. Unlike DMBA, the weight of the thymus was strikingly decreased by predonisolone, one of corticosteroids, whereas reactions of the spleen and the lymph nodes were not remarkable. Autoradiographical studies revealed a severe reduction followed by a marked rebound of labeling index in the red pulp of the spleen, but not in the white pulps of the spleen and cortex of the thymus. From these observations, it is concluded that a mild but long standing injury was noticed in the tissues which were the main sites of the tumorigenesis in mice by DMBA, and a severe but transient injury may not be related to induction of tumors in mice by DMBA.

[The pathologico-anatomic study of the metastatic tumor of the spine (author's transl)].

The radiological and histological studies were performed on the three spinal column obtained at autopsy from cases with metastatic tumors to the spine with complete paralysis treated surgically. These three cases consisted of a maxillary carcinoma with metastasis to the cervical spine, a seminoma with metastasis to the thoracic spine and a metastasized renal cell carcinoma to the thoracic spine. All patients died without recovery from the paralysis, in spite of the immediate tumor resection and spinal fusion were done immediately after the appearance of complete paralysis. The histological examination of cross section of these spinal column showed that tumor cells infiltrated in the vertebral body and spinal canal, and spinal cord was remarkably compressed by the tumor. Therefore, various degrees of degeneration were seen in the spinal cord. In addition, many tumor-cell emboli were seen in veins of vertebral body and spinal canal in two cases, and also tumor cell infiltration to an intradural space and marked deformity of the spinal cord were seen in one case. These above findings would suggest that tumor cells, which metastasized to vertebral body through venous plexus from the primary lesion, infiltrated into the spinal canal, compressed spinal cord and caused paralysis.

Induction of lymphatic leukemia in non-inbred mice and its control with glucocorticoids. The Lucy Wortham James lecture.

A set of feedings of a lipid solution of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene given biweekly by gastric intubation to young adult female mice of the non-inbred CF-1 strain elicited lymphatic leukemia in 73% of the animals in 112 +/- 24 days. Brief ether anesthesia facilitated alimentary administration of hydrocarbons and steroids. Inoculation of whole blood of mice with lymphatic leukemia into the subcutaneous tissue of allogeneic newborn resulted in lymphosarcomas at the injection site sometimes associated with leukemia. The lymphosarcomas of infant mice regressed rapidly following administration of cortisone or dexamethasone. They frequently, but not invariably, recurred; 14% of the mice were free from lymphosarcoma 3 months after treatment with the glucocorticoids.
