Leiomyoblastoma of the larynx: report of a case.

Leiomyomas or benign tumors of smooth muscle origin are extremely rare in the larynx. A review of the literature revealed only 15 confirmed cases of leiomyoma, eight leiomyosarcomas, and no cases of leiomyoblastoma. An unusual case of "bizarre" laryngeal leiomyoma arising from the vocal cord, which is believed to be the first reported case in the literature is presented herein.

Effects of orally administered 5-fluorouracil and its derivative 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine on 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene-induced breast carcinomas in rats.

Antitumour activity of 20 mg/kg 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and 100 or 200 mg/kg 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5'-DFUR) was assessed by tumour regression, light and electron microscopic changes, and immunohistochemical variations in broxuridine labelling in 7,12-dimethyl-benz[a]anthracene- (DMBA-) induced breast carcinomas in rats. The relative regression of tumours was significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in animals receiving 5-FU or 5'-DFUR than in control animals. Light microscopic changes became apparent after 3 or 4 days' treatment and were more evident after 4-21 days. Electron microscopic degeneration of tumours was observed after 1 day. The broxuridine labelling index decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) in rats receiving 5-FU and especially in those receiving 5'-DFUR. Concentrations of 5-FU in DMBA-induced breast carcinomas were significantly (P less than 0.05) higher in rats treated with 5'-DFUR than in those treated with 5-FU, and the histological degeneration was significantly (P less than 0.05) more advanced in 5'-DFUR- than in 5-FU-treated animals, possibly due to the higher pyrimidine nucleoside phosphorylase activity in the former treatment group.

Post transplanted infective endocarditis.

The patient, a 51-year-old man, was receiving immunosuppressants for 2 yr after renal allotransplantation. He had heart failure with aortic regurgitation, fever, anemia and a history of odontectomy on admission. He was resistant to medical treatments and died from cerebral emboli. On autopsy, vegetation of the aortic valve was identified. Progression of atherosclerosis, which may have been due to steroids and chronic rejection, was prominent. This report is the first case of infective endocarditis following organ transplantation in Japan. Such complications as infective endocarditis and atherosclerosis will be on the rise with the increase of numbers or organ transplantations.

Histological findings of esophageal injury induced by intracavitary irradiation.

The histological findings of esophageal injury induced by intracavitary irradiation are reported. In the portion irradiated intracavitarily, denudation and regeneration were found in the epithelium, degenerative changes of small vessels and fibrotic changes were found in the submucosa, and fibrotic changes were also found in the muscle layers. Our data suggest that these characteristic changes correlate with the additional dosage given by intracavitary irradiation following external irradiation.

Intracavitary irradiation of esophageal carcinoma invaded to cardia.

A case of esophageal carcinoma that had invaded to the cardia was treated with intracavitary irradiation. The residual tumor was present at the cardia after radiotherapy. This result demonstrates that intracavitary irradiation is not necessarily effective for cases with invasion to the cardia of the stomach. Operation is recommended for such cases to obtain local control.

Small cell carcinoma of the esophagus combined with superficial esophageal cancer.

Primary small cell carcinoma of the esophagus is a rare neoplasm, with approximately 134 cases having been reported in the world literature, including some cases of small cell carcinoma concomitant with squamous cell carcinoma. We present the case of an 71-year-old man with small cell carcinoma concomitant with a superficial early type of squamous cell carcinoma. We performed endoscopic mucosal resection for the early cancer, followed by an operation two weeks later. We discuss appropriate therapeutic methods for treating such early esophageal cancers, and the relationship between small cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus.
