Optic disk drusen with central retinal artery occlusion.

An 18-year-old Japanese boy with optic disk drusen associated with left central retinal artery occlusion was reported. Transient central blurred vision, possibly caused by central retinal artery spasm, was noticed as an initial symptom of optic disk drusen in the left eye. Prolonged and repeated spasm might have given rise to a central retinal artery occlusion followed by neovascular glaucoma. The relationship between drusen in the disk and intrapapillary circulation disturbances was discussed.

Some recent advances in HLA and skin diseases.

During the past 15 years, much has been learned about the human major histocompatibility complex. These new findings have been applied to the whole field of medicine, including transplantation immunology, blood transfusions, association with disease, human genetics, and the mechanism of human immune responses. In clinical medicine, the association between the major histocompatibility complex and various diseases has attracted the greatest interest. In this paper, we summarize the basic information on the human histocompatibility complex and its association with dermatologic disorders. Data from the world literature are reviewed and tabulated. Our own investigations on psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and epidermolysis bullosa are discussed in detail.

Thyrotrophin-binding inhibitory immunoglobulins and HLA-DRW3-two prognostic factors in Graves' disease.

Thyrotrophin-binding inhibitory immuno-globulin (TBII) activity and HLA typing were performed in 38 Chinese patients with Graves' disease to find out the relationship among TBII activity, HLA antigen and relapse. Twelve out of 13 patients who were TBII-positive at anti-thyroid drug withdrawal relapsed. All seven patients with HLA-DR3 antigen relapsed, whereas all ten patients in remission did not have DR3. Therefore, both TBII activity at drug withdrawal and DR3 antigen could predict subsequent relapse. However, a larger patient sample is required to determine the precise relationship between TBII activity and HLA-DR3 antigen.

Immunoglobulin G heavy-chain allotypes as possible genetic markers for human cancer.

Serum samples from 343 unrelated, healthy Japanese, 194 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive healthy carriers, 96 patients with primary hepatoma, 91 patients with lung cancer, 94 patients with breast cancer, and 87 patients with gastric cancer were examined for IgG heavy-chain allotypes (Gm). The Gm phenotypes of the sera from patients with breast cancer exhibited a distribution similar to that of the normal controls. However, compared to that of normal controls, the Gm phenotype (1,2,21,13,15,16) was significantly increased in the patients with primary hepatoma(chi 2 (1) = 15.12, corrected P less than 0.01) and in the patients with lung cancer (chi 2 (1) = 10.97, corrected P less than 0.05). Compared to that of normal controls, the haplotype Gm 1,2,21 was significantly increased in the patients with primary hepatoma (chi 2 (1) = 22.34, corrected P less than 0.01). Increased frequency of Gm 1,2,21 in primary hepatoma was also significant compared to that of HBsAg-positive healthy carriers (chi 2 (1) = 9.25, corrected P less than 0.05).

HLA-D/DR linked immune response to Candida allergen: an in vivo and in vitro study in Japanese.

Immune response to Candida allergen in man was studied using the lymphocyte reaction in vitro and the skin test in vivo. One hundred and ten normal healthy Japanese were typed for HLA-A, B, D and DR. It was found that HLA-B7, Dw1 and DR1 were strongly associated with high responsiveness and Den and Mt2 with low responsiveness. In a family study, the inheritance of high responsiveness was observed. In the reaction patterns of HLA-D homozygote and heterozygote cells, it was found that Dw1/DR1 and Dw12/DR2 were associated with a high responders and that DYT/DR4 and DEn (6.1)/DR- were associated with low responders. It is considered that the Dw1/DRl gene might be more dominant as an immune response; the Ir gene when compared to a gene such as the DYT, and the EDn (6.1) as an immune suppressive; Is gene. A genetic factor can be implicated in the secondary response (but not the primary response) to Candida allergen. Therefore, the existence of HLA-linked Ir and/or Is gene to Candida allergen is discussed.

Friend murine leukemia virus resistance in Japanese wild mice: possible allelism with Fv-4 in FRG mice.

A dominant gene (Rm) for resistance to ecotropic murine leukemia virus was found in Japanese wild mice (Mn) and was similar to the FV-4 gene in inbred FRG mice. About one-fourth of the progeny of the cross (BALB/c x Mn) x (FRG x BALB/c) produced only resistant progeny when crossed to BALB/c mice, which indicated that Rm and Fv-4 are at the same chromosomal location. This evidence for allelism was confirmed by the finding that matings of BALB/c mice partially congenic for Rm or for Fv-4 yielded progeny that produced only resistant offspring when crossed to BALB/c mice.

[Studies on the mechanical properties of dental Ag-Pd-Au-Cu alloys. (Part 1) Effects of age-hardening treatment on the tensile behaviour of alloys (author's transl)].

Tensile behaviour of Ag-Pd-Au-Cu alloys depending on age-hardening was studied by the tensile test with extensometer. The fractured surface of the alloys was observed by the scanning electron microscope. Plastic deformation of alloys was changed from discontinuous yielding to parabolic strain hardening, as the size of precipitate hard particles was grown by aging. There appears to be good correlation between the tensile strength of alloys with aging and the hardness. Strain hardening parameters of the Ludwik, Swift, Voce and Hollomon empirical equations in describing the stress-strain curves were calculated by the least square method. Theoretical tensile strength which was computed from these empirical equations, was good agreement with the tensile test of alloys with aging. But, theoretical uniform elongation tended to elongate. The ratio of tensile strength to proof stress of over-aged alloys was extremely low, as compared with the other alloys. So, over-aging should be avoided to use the alloys in dentistry. If structure of the precipitate particles is controlled by aging temperature and time, the loss of ductility on age-hardening will be considerably eliminated.
