[Urinary excretion of cadmium, copper and zinc in workers exposed to cadmium].

Changes in urinary cadmium, copper and zinc excretion in workers who had considerable exposure to cadmium oxide fumes were investigated over a 5-year period following the cessation of exposure. The 22 male subjects aged 22 to 55 had been welders on automobile parts for periods ranging from 7 months to 23 years, using silver solder which contained cadmium. They were divided into three groups according to levels of urinary cadmium in the first medical examination in 1975: 5 in the high excretion group, 11 in the moderate group, and 6 in the low group. Renal tubular dysfunctions were indicated in most workers in the high excretion group but not in the other two groups. The high and moderate groups showed a rapid decrease in the levels of urinary-excreted cadmium, with biological half-times of 1.42 and 1.21 years, respectively. Excreted cadmium levelled off in the two groups about 1.7 and 1.5 years after the last exposure. Urinary copper excretion in the high cadmium excretion group was about twice that in the moderate and low groups, the difference being statistically significant in comparison with the controls. Urinary zinc excretion was high in all subjects immediately after cessation of exposure but decreased rapidly. After three years it was found that the reduction of urinary zinc was greatest in the high cadmium group. Urinary cadmium showed significant correlations with both copper and zinc. Urinary copper showed a negative correlation with zinc excretion in the high cadmium excretion group and a significant positive correlation in the other two groups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Inhibitory effects of oxatomide on several activities of SRS-A and synthetic leukotrienes in guinea-pigs and rats.

Effects of oxatomide, an orally active anti-allergic drug, on several activities of slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A) and synthetic leukotrienes (LT) C4, D4 and E4 were investigated. In addition, such activities of oxatomide were compared with those of FPL-55712. Oxatomide, at a concentration of 3 X 10(-8) M or higher, inhibited the phasic contractions of isolated guinea-pig ileum induced by partially purified SRS-Agp and SRS-Arat which were anaphylactically generated from guinea-pig lung fragments and rat peritoneal cavities, respectively. The 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC 50) of oxatomide to the contractions by SRS-Agp and SRS-Arat are 2.7 +/- 0.9 X 10(-7) M and 1.6 +/- 0.3 X 10(-7) M, respectively. Oxatomide also inhibited the LTC4, LTD4, histamine or serotonin-induced contractions of ileum. FPL-55712, a specific SRS-A antagonist, inhibited SRS-Agp, SRS-Arat, LTC4 or LTD4-induced contractions at concentrations ranging from 10(-9) M to 10(-6) M without affecting histamine and serotonin responses. Oxatomide produced dose-dependent relaxations of isolated guinea-pig tracheal and lung parenchymal strips precontracted with LTD4 and histamine. Oxatomide, at doses 10 and 30 mg/kg (p.o.), inhibited significantly the increase in vascular permeability produced by LTC4, LTE4, histamine and serotonin in rats. These results suggest that, although less effective and less selective as compared with FPL-55712, oxatomide exerts inhibitory effects on SRS-A activities, and that such effects could partly explain the anti-allergic effects of the compound.

[A case of multiple carcinomas of the colon and rectum associated with ulcerative colitis].

The present paper describes a patient with four independent carcinomas associated with ulcerative colitis. Subtotal colectomy with lymph node dissection was done on June 28, 1978. The operative specimen revealed a carcinoma at the descending colon, two independent cancerous lesions and papillary polyps at the sigmoid colon and a scirrhous, flat elevated neoplasm at the rectum. These carcinomas were surrounded by lesions of various degrees of epithelial dysplasia, suggesting precancerous change. Carcinomas and precancerous lesions were stained for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) by the CEA peroxidase antiperoxidase method, which is considered to be useful to discriminate precancerous change from an inflamed mucous membrane.

[A case of recurrent yolk sac tumor of the testis in childhood: bulky retroperitoneal metastatic tumors cured by tumor resection and chemotherapy].

We carried out only high orchiectomy for a 1-year and 7-month-old boy with stage 1 yolk sac tumor of the testis, after 13-months a bulky retroperitoneal metastatic tumor was found. Following chemotherapy with CDDP, ACD, VBL, PLM and CTX two times after tumor resection, elevated serum AFP was normalized. He has been in continuous complete remission with no evidence of disease for 3 years and 2 months. Combination chemotherapy with CDDP has a dramatic effect on the yolk sac tumor of infantile testis. We believe that "watchful waiting" after high orchiectomy alone is the best modality for all cases of stage 1 yolk sac tumor of the infantile testis.
