Chronic encapsulated intracerebellar hematoma in infancy: case report.

A case of intracerebellar hematoma in infancy is reported. Although the clinical course and computed tomographic appearances suggested a cerebellar tumor, intraoperative and microscopic investigations demonstrated a chronic expanding hematoma enlarging with repeated hemorrhages inside the capsule. The differential diagnosis of this entity is discussed.

Pancreatic tissue in teratoma.

Seventeen teratomas with well-differentiated pancreatic tissue were found in 469 cases obtained from the files in our respective departments for the last ten years. These cases included 11 cases with a teratoma located in the anterior mediastinum, five cases with a teratoma located in the sacrococcygeal region, and one case with a teratoma located in the retroperitoneal space. The islets of Langerhans, as well as exocrine elements, were usually found in the pancreatic tissue. The blood glucose level was mildly depressed in one case of five teratomas, and a very high amylase level was observed in one other case. These levels were estimated in the fistulous discharge from the teratoma. Therefore, we felt that the pancreatic tissue observed in the teratomas was similar in nature to normal pancreatic tissue both histologically and functionally.

[Squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder--report of two cases].

Two cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder are presented. Initial pathologic diagnosis was based on biopsy findings; it was confirmed by findings on resected specimens. Since aggressive surgical therapy has been reported to be successful, we attempted radical surgery in both of our patients. A 76-year-old woman underwent total cystectomy with resection of segments of rectal and vaginal walls with ureterocutaneostomy and colostomy. The other patient, a 66-year-old woman was inoperable due to wide tumor invasion. She died two months later of cerebrovascular accident apparently unrelated to original disease. The ultrastructural findings, which typically show numerous tonofilaments, ribosomes and desmosomes, are presented and discussed.

A histopathological study on the etiology of duodenal diverticulum related to the fusion of the pancreatic anlage.

In 18 of 27 cases a duodenal diverticulum, which usually occurs at "weak" spots in the bowel wall, penetrated the pancreas. Of these, 14 cases (77.8%) extended along the embryological fusion line of the ventral and dorsal components, which is considered to be the so-called "locus minoris resistantiae." In four cases the diverticulum penetrating the ventral pancreas was in close approximation to the locus minoris resistantiae.

Limited chymotryptic cleavage of human C4-binding protein: isolation of a carbohydrate-containing core domain and an active fragment.

Human C4 binding protein (C4bp), which is a macromolecular weight (Mr 450,000-590,000) cofactor of C3b/C4b inactivator (I), is composed of 6 or 8 disulfide-linked polypeptide chains of Mr 75,000. Chymotrypsin cleaved C4bp into two major fragments; a large fragment of Mr 160,000, which contained carbohydrate chains and was composed of disulfide-linked polypeptide chains of Mr 25,000, and a small fragment of Mr 48,000, which was a single polypeptide chain and had the cofactor activity of C4bp. These results suggest that chymotrypsin liberates a functional domain-containing Mr 48,000 fragment from each subunit chain of C4bp and yields a core fragment derived from a disulfide-knot domain connecting each subunit chain of C4bp.

Differences of the ventral and dorsal anlagen of pancreas after fusion.

The distribution of the ventral pancreas after fusion was considered as a dorsal portion of the head containing the area surrounding the intrapancreatic view and by the distribution of "irregularly shaped islets". These special islets were not uniform in shape and contained few A, B, and D cells and many argyrophil cells with Grimelius stain. In some cases the ventral pancreas was identified macroscopically from the dorsal one by the presence of the smaller and closely packed lobuli. As for the differences of both anlagen, we emphasized "the irregularly shaped islets" and scantier fat in the ventral pancreas.
