The typical distinguishing features of special cases which require contact lenses for satisfactory vision are described. Hence in the first case with anisometria associated with irregular astigmatism of one eye, to which a toric soft contact lens was adapted. In the second case a visual acuity of only 0,6 monocular was attained with the best spectacle lens, however with contact lense the visual acuity was 1.25. Here a verdict from a social court is mentioned, which obliged the sickness insurance to take over the costs for such a case. In the third case the adaptation of contact lenses was undertaken after radical bilateral keratoplasty because of parenchymatous keratitis, and an improvement in visual acuity of at least 400% resulted.

The influence of storage duration on the lipid and fatty acid content of potato tubers and on the concentration of volatile aroma substances in potato chips were studied. An increase in the unsaturated fatty acids of potato tubers was found during the first months of storage. The higher lipid content of early maturing varieties as compared with late maturing ones may be explained by decreased physiological maturity of these potatoes. Among the aroma substances the constituents hexanal, pentanal, and pentane are possible important indicators for the rancidity of potato chips. Relationships between differing storage conditions of chips and their reeping quality were indicated by volatile aroma substances, especially hexanal.

The structure of the abnormal lipoprotein X occurring in the plasma of patients with obstructive jaundice was investigated by X-ray small-angle scattering. The data were analyzed by discussing the distance distribution functions obtained directly from the experimental data by Fourier transformation, involving no a priori assumptions. The results provide evidence for lipoprotein X being essentially a random distribution of lamellae with a thickness of 5.1 nm and are consistent with hollow spherical (vesicular) structures of outer diameters greater than 30 nm with some overall size heterogeneity. Under the experimental conditions chosen, lipoprotein concentrations between 0.01 and 0.18 g/ml in in buffers of low ionic strength, lateral stacking as observed in negative-stain electron microscopy does not occur. The electron density profile perpendicular to the lamellar plane indicates that a lipid bilayer is the underlying structural principle, with the protein moieties partly bound within the polar head-group regions and partly occluded in soluble form in the vesicle interior.
Using 99mTc cerebral scintigraphy and a gamma camera/computer system, the pattern of cerebral blood flow in 5 brain areas was monitored in 30 geriatric patients with cerebrovascular insufficiency. Readings were compared on a within-patient basis for the following treatments: initial control (I), intravenous administration of 10 ml physiological saline solution (II), and intravenous administration of 10 ml (200 mg) pentoxifylline (III). By comparsion with treatment I and II, pentoxifylline produced significant increases in cerebral blood flow. It is suggested that this increase in perfusion is possibly due to an improvement in the flow properties of blood.

Routine screening of maternal antibodies showed presence of anti-Fya (from the antigen Fya of Duffy Blood Group System) in a 25 years old second time pregnant woman. The spectroscopic examination of amniotic fluid has been carried out and gave values which decrease within Zone II. In the beginning of 39. week of gestation a mature newborn has been delivered, who survived without need of exchange transfusion immediately after birth.
The paper concerns with group-behavior-therapy with patients having psychosomatic disorders. The therapy was applied to two groups. The therapy has not been fully standardized but individual differences of each client's behavior-analysis was taken into account. The clients were to learn the understanding of the development of their symptoms and the conditions under which the symptoms remained and changed. Clients should help each other as co-therapists. The group-therapy was divided into three parts: (1) communication-training in the group, (2) introduction to the basic principles of learning, (3) application of special therapeutic methods. The therapy procedure as well as the results of the first follow-up are reported. The concept of group-therapy is discussed.

This paper is the first part of a study aiming to further analyse the hypothesis that in growing animals an increased VO2 due to a high physical activity leads to a quantitative adaptation of the gas exchange apparatus. Trying to avoid the tedious treadmill exercises we tested the applicability of the drug IDPN (imino-beta,beta'-dipropionitrile) as an inducer of increased VO2. Three intraperitoneal injections of IDPN permanently transform normal white mice into 'waltzing mice'. In our experiments ten male mice were injected with IDPN at the age of 20, 21 and 23 days. A control group was simultaneously injected with saline. The typical 'IDPN' hyperkinetic syndrome' appeared within five days from the first injection. The treated mice lost weight and grew at a slower rate than the controls. Their physical activity, as measured by Animex activity meters, was about twice that of the controls and was accompanied by a 50% increase in specific VO2 (VO2/body weight). At the age of about 4 months all animals were killed, their lungs fixed by intratracheal instillation of glutaraldehyde for a complete morphometric analysis. The body weights and the weights of heart, liver, kidneys, viscera, skin and carcass as well as the skin surface area were determined. IDPN mice were significantly lighter than the controls (-16%). All the other parameters cited above were reduced in about the same proportions, so that, when related to body weight, no significant changes could be detected. Specific lung volumes (VL/body weight) of IDPN mice were however up by 23%. These findings confirm that IDPN treatment represents a suitable way to increase VO2 in mice and may therefore allow to avoid more cumbersome methods of enforced exercise. The complete morphometric analysis will be published in a following paper.
