Influence of the assay conditions on the lipolytic potency in vitro of different adrenocorticotrophins.

The lipolytic activity of ACTH-(1-39) and ACTH-(1-24) in vitro has been compared on a molar basis in assays performed with both adipose-tissue slices and isolated fat cells. In the tissue-slice assay ACTH-(1-24) displayed 29% of the potency of ACTH-(1-39), whereas in the isolated-cell assay, ACTH-(1-24) was 3.9 times more potent than the longer peptide. This discrepancy seems to be due to the fact that ACTH-peptides are inactivated in the adipose-tissue-slice assay, but remain stable in the isolated-fat-cell assay. ACTH-(1-24) is inactivated more rapidly than ACTH-(1-39). Pre-incubation and washing of the tissue slices removes the inactivating principle, which most likely consists of peptidases, and their responsiveness is increased, so that both ACTH-peptides display similar lipolytic activity to that seen in the isolated-cell system. Comparison of the responsiveness of isolated fat cells and isolated adrenal cells indicates that the affinity of ACTH for the receptor of adrenal cells is approximately 100 times greater than its affinity for the fat-cell receptor.

[Influence of ouabain on the electrophoretic mobility of erythrocytes in 7 patients with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy].

Measurements of electrophoretic mobility of erythrocytes under the influence of ouabain were carried out on seven patients suffering from progressive Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. While ouabain-treated erythrocytes of healthy controls showed a significant decrease (alpha = 0.001) in electrophoretic mobility, an increase was found in five of the patients, and two patients revealed a slight drop in electrophoretic mobility. A significant difference (alpha = 0.001) was obtained in comparing the control group of patients. Initial trial measurements suggested that such a difference is also true for some other forms of muscular dystrophy and Werdnig-Hoffmann's spinal muscular atrophy.

[The influence of rehabilitative factors on the behavior and affect of epileptics].

First experience in the occupational rehabilitation of a group of less gifted juvenile epileptics is reported. In this paper, the emphasis is on both psychological and sociopsychological aspects of rehabilitation. The observation and control of processes and reactions is of major importance to the entire program of rehabilitation. Also, the improvement of the occupational situation of a patient will have a positive influence on his social behavior, self-confidence, and emotions. Rehabilitation is a complex process, with the results depending to a very large extent on extremely methodical approaches.

[Interaction between construction and fixation of knee endoprostheses (author's transl)].

The two completely different total knee-endoprostheses (hinge type and sled or runner type) have been compared concerning construction and ability for take up or transmission of forces and moments. The difference to the real knee joint are described. The reactions on fixing of endoprostheses in the bone caused by the construction are emphasized. By a systematic analysis of the so called sled-prostheses is to be shown to differantiate between real sled-prostheses with rotation and sliding mobility and pseudo-sled-prostheses (better rotation-segment-prostheses). They have only one possibility of rotation to realize the knee bending. The kind and number of existing "degrees of freedom" are used as a significant characteristic to differentiate the various endoprostheses principles and their variants. This study should mainly inspirate for a systematic comparison of efficiency of the different types of knee-endoprostheses. This should give the operating surgeon for a length of time an objective aid to decision.

[Pacemaker treatment in myocarditis (author's transl)].

The occurrence of bradycardial arrhythmias in the course of myocarditides of different etiologies is reported. The many different variations in the course of the disease are presented with reference to seven typical examples, and also the indications and risks for pacemaker therapy and its predominantly successful but sometimes, in the last analysis, unsatisfactory use.

[Consequences of the daily rhythm of organ functions and of metabolic processes for screening].

The effects of the influencing factors such as age, sex, exposition to pharmaca, physical activity, alimentary load and endogenic daily rhythm on sensitivity and specifity of the parameters of screening are briefly described. It is reported on the results of examinations of one of these influencing factors and on the endogenic daily rhythm with the help of selected instances.

[Clinical experience with Dilatol therapy in EPH-gestoses].

An information about the experience with DILATOL-treatment of 11 patients suffering from EPH-gestosis with hypertonia as the main symptom, is given. In all cases it was possible to reduce the systolic and diastolic blood-pressure. In long-time treatment an increasing resistance to therapy was noticed. In any case the treatment has to be combined with a frequent medical control of the gravidity with respect to the foetus and the placenta, to determine the right moment of the premature finishing of the gravidity, which is often necessary. Although no child of our 11 patients, died, it wasn't possible to prove the fact, that the perinatal mortality in the case of heavy EPH-gestosis after treating with beta-adrenergic substances is reduced. There weren't noticed any detrimental consequences to mother and child after treating with DILATOL within a space of time up to 4 weeks up to a total amount of 500 mg.
