[Cytology of percutaneous aspiration biopsy of renal angiomyolipoma: a study of 4 cases].

Percutaneous aspiration biopsy of renal angiomyolipoma (AML) was carried out on four patients to investigate the cytological features of AML. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically after the removal of the tumor. The specimen was fixed in 95% alcohol and stained by the Papanicolaou's method. Cells obtained formed clusters in three of four cases. Cells originating from leiomyomatous element of AML varied in their size, but are usually small with small oval nuclei and rich cytoplasm of lacy appearance. The cytoplasm was fragile and the cell border was not clear. Nuclear chromatin was not increased and was distributed diffusely. Fat cells originating from fatty element of the tumor were mature type and obtained from all of three patients who had much typical lipomatous element in the tumor. In conclusion, cytology of aspiration biopsy is useful to establish preoperative diagnosis of AML in such occasions when there are difficulties in differential diagnoses between AML and renal cell carcinoma even by either computed tomography, angiography or ultrasonography.

[Implantation of a vascular access device in cancer treatment: operation or angiographic technic?].

Thirty cancer patients, who were diagnosed to be beyond the operable stage, were treated by intra-arterial anticancer agent infusion via an implantable vascular access device (VAD) combined with local hyperthermia and/or charcoal hemoperfusion. The VAD was implanted by a surgical procedure in 14 patients, or by a technique similar to super-selective angiography mainly via the femoral artery in the remaining 16 patients who could not be operated on because of their seriously severe clinical condition and/or the difficulty involved in approaching the tumor feeding artery due to the presence of huge tumors or multiple lymph node metastasis. No serious complications were seen in these treatments. However, the catheter became occluded after an average post-implantation period of 9 months in 6 patients in the operative group. Since an operative procedure is very often too invasive for end-stage cancer patients and may enhance tumor growth, VAD implantation utilizing an angiographic technique is recommendable for the treatment of advanced cancer.

[Study of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity in the human semen].

NAG activity in the human semen was measured using NAG kit. Plasma NAG activity in the semen was more than 500 times higher than that of urine, while in sperm, NAG activity was low. In a frozen condition, NAG activity in semen plasma did not change for more than five weeks. NAG activity in semen plasma of male infertility associated with oligozoospermia was 1,918 +/- 829 (M +/- S.D.) mU/ml. Among the reproductive tissue, high NAG activities were observed in epididymis and prostate. Our present study suggests that NAG in semen plasma must possess some active roles related to sperm maturation and/or sperm motility or both.

The quantitative and useful expression of the hardness of agar plate medium for mycoplasmas and bacteria.

A method for quantitative expression of the hardness of agar plate medium was studied. As the method for expressing the hardness by using real values of the load which an agar plate medium could sustain for a certain length of time was found to be inaccurate, we proposed a method to express the hardness by utilizing the frequency with which various loads were sustained for a given period of time and the obtained value is referred to as 'gel solidity' (GS). The GS value within a certain range was found to be statistically useful because it linearly reflected the changes in variables in experimental conditions in respect to agar, such as agar concentration, thickness of the agar layer and the temperature of the environment, and especially because it can provide a quantitative as well as reproducible value for the hardness of agar plate medium. On the other hand, GS was little, if at all, affected by variables unrelated to agar.

[Clinical effectiveness of short-term administration of norfloxacin in acute urethritis].

Thirty patients with acute urethritis were treated with short-term administration of norfloxacin. The drug was administered randomly in two regimens: Two 400 mg oral doses for a single day or three 200 mg oral doses for three days. For gonorrheal urethritis, the efficacy rates of one and three-day administrations were 75 and 90%, respectively. For non-gonorrheal urethritis, they were 75% each. No adverse effects were observed. The results indicate that short-term administration of norfloxacin is useful in the treatment of acute urethritis, especially for gonorrheal urethritis.

Successful treatment of yolk sac tumor of the lower abdominal wall with lymph node metastases.

We report a case of a primary yolk sac tumor of the lower abdominal wall with inguinal lymph node metastases. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case originating in the lower abdominal wall. Radical surgery was performed, followed by combination chemotherapy consisting of bleomycin, vinblastine and cis-platinum. The patient has been free of disease for more than 2 years.

Comparison of the efficacy of egg yolk extract and horse serum for growth of Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

The usefulness of chicken egg yolk extract as a substitute for horse serum in culture media for Mycoplasma pneumoniae was investigated. As a growth-supporting factor in the growth medium for M. pneumoniae and some other mycoplasmal species, the primary isolation medium for M. pneumoniae, and the metabolism-inhibition test medium for diagnosis of M. pneumoniae infection, egg yolk extract may be an excellent substitute for horse serum. The particular superiority of egg yolk extract to horse serum is that egg yolk extract, unlike horse serum, did not show any inhibitory effect on the growth of M. pneumoniae.

[Sequential intravesical chemotherapy with mitomycin C and adriamycin for superficial bladder tumor (preliminary report)].

Intravesical chemotherapy with sequential instillation of mitomycin C and adriamycin was carried out on 19 patients with superficial bladder cancer (Ta, T1 and Tis). Twenty milligram of mitomycin C on day 1 and 40 mg of adriamycin on day 2 were instilled into the bladder, this treatment being repeated weekly for 5 consecutive weeks if there were no serious side effects. The following results were obtained. Of 16 evaluable patients, 10 patients (63%) achieved complete response and 2 patients achieved partial response, 4 patients showing no response. In patients with high grade tumor, especially with carcinoma in situ, a high CR rate (6/7 or 86%) was achieved. Chemical cystitis occurred in 10 out of 19 (53%) patients. In 5 of the 6 patients who suffered from severe cystitis symptoms, treatment was discontinued. However, the symptoms resolved within 4 weeks in all patients.

Inhibition of growth of mammalian cell cultures by extracts of arginine-utilizing mycoplasmas.

Mechanisms of the inhibition of growth of mammalian cell cultures caused by mycoplasmal infection were investigated by using cell-free extracts of 14 species of mycoplasmas. In four mammalian cell lines tested, the growth of two cell lines, FM3A and MDCK, was inhibited by the extracts of arginine-utilizing mycoplasmas, whereas that of the other two cell lines, Vero and LLC-MK2, was not inhibited by extracts of either arginine- or glucose-utilizing mycoplasmas. These results suggest that there are two types of cell cultures, one susceptible and the other insusceptible to arginine-utilizing mycoplasmas. In a series of experiments using FM3A cells, it was found that the growth inhibition caused by the extracts of arginine-utilizing mycoplasmas was due to removal of arginine from the medium by the action of arginine deiminase present in the extracts and that none of the metabolic products of arginine had any effect on the growth. A highly positive correlation (r = 0.96, P less than 0.01) was observed between the activity of arginine deiminase and the growth-inhibiting activity of extracts of arginine-utilizing mycoplasmas.
