A histopathological study on the hypertrophy of the atrioventricular conduction system.

A microscopical study of the AV conduction system using a serial sectioning method, was performed on 81 autopsied hearts with blocks anywhere in the hearts without arrhythmia. Pre-blockade hypertrophy in the AV conduction system was seen in 38%, 38%, 50-58% corresponded respectively to 3 degrees AV block, 1-2 degrees AV block and bundle branch block (including left hemiblock). Post-blockade hypertrophy was also observed in 58%, 38% and 42-25% of the above mentioned types of blocks respectively. Hypertrophy anywhere in the AV conduction system was seen in 77%, 42%, 78%, 39%, 30% and 74% of the cases with blocks, sick sinus syndrome, pre-excitation syndrome, other arrhythmias, normal hearts and hypertrophied hearts without arrhythmia, respectively. Hypertrophy of the proximal AV conduction system to the bundle of His was specific for arrhythmia group, whereas hypertrophy of the bundle branches occurred in either hypertrophy without arrhythmia or in bundle branch block. Hypertrophy of the Purkinje cells was remarkable in sudden cardiac death by clinically-proved ventricular fibrillation. Incidence of sclerosis of the AV node artery was high in the arrhythmia group, especially the highest (90%) in the sudden death group.

Carcinogenicity of benzyl chloride, benzal chloride, benzotrichloride and benzoyl chloride in mice by skin application.

The carcinogenicity of benzyl chloride (BYC), benzal chloride (BAC), benzotrichloride (BTC) and benzoyl chloride (BOC), which were suspected as causative agents of lung cancer and maxillary malignant lymphoma of workers employed in factories producing BOC, was examined by skin applications in female ICR mice. After rather high dose exposure, BTC exhibited leukemogenic and pulmonary tumorigenic activities as well as potent dermal carcinogenic activity. After administration of the chemicals at the dose of 2.3 microliter/animal, twice a week for 50 weeks, BTC induced 68% incidence of skin cancers and 58% incidence of pulmonary tumors (including 10% of lung carcinomas) within 399 days. Incidence of skin cancers was 58% for BAC, 15% for BYC and 10% for BOC within 560 days. Considering the extent of possible exposure of the workers to these chemicals in the working environment and the carcinogenic potency of the chemicals tested, it can be concluded that BTC was very probably responsible for causing the cancers seen int he workers employed in manufacturing BOC.

Isolation and characterization of alkali-labile oligosaccharide units from horse glycophorin.

The O-glycosidically linked carbohydrate units of glycophorin derived from horse erythrocyte membrane were released as reduced oligosaccharides by alkaline borohydride treatment. One tetrasaccharide, two trisaccharides, and two disaccharides were purified by gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. Studies employing periodate oxidation, methylation analysis and gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed the following structures for these oligosaccharides; a tetrasaccharide; N-glycolylneuraminyl-(2 leads to 3)-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 leads to 3)-[N-glycolylneuraminyl-(2 leads to 6)]-D-N-acetylgalactosaminitol, trisaccharides; N-glycolylneuraminyl-(2 leads to 3)-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 leads to 3)-D-N-acetylgalactosaminitol and D-galactopyranosyl-(1 leads to 3)-[N-glycolylneuraminyl-(2 leads to 6)-a1-D-N-acetylgalactosaminitol, disaccharides; D-galactopyranosyl-(1 leads to 3)-D-N-acetylgalactosaminitol and N-glycolylneuraminyl-(2 leads to 3)-D-galacitol.

The changing style of symptomatology of hysteria.

The symptomatology of 412 hysteric women was investigated and analyzed at the Neuropsychiatric Clinic, Tohoku University Hospital, from 1952 till 1973, according to the study stages, 1952-1957 and 1958-1973, and the patients' residence, both rural and urban. Withdrawal with taciturnity was seen in 27% of them and stubbornness with egocentricity in 14% as the frequent personality traits. Physical distress was significantly a frequent problem in the recent rural patients. Among symptoms insomnia and tinnitus have decreased. Mutism and deviated attitude were seen more frequently in the rural patients. Astasia-abasia and syncope have increased. Generally speaking, hysteric symptomatology seemed to have become of tranquil style recently and the rural patients showed more frequently nonverbal expression in terms of mutism and deviated attitude than the urban patients.

Hysteria and urbanization.

The statistics of neuropsychiatric clinics in two general hospitals in Sendai City were analyzed to investigate the relation between the incidence of hysteria and the urbanization in terms of population density. The proportion of hysteric women to total female patients had decreased in both clinics in recent years. The incidence of hysteric patients seemed to decrease in almost all population sizes of their residential administrative units except for in a couple of population sizes. The incidence of hysteric patients was relatively high in the satellites of the Sendai metropolis. It might be a loss of traditional sociocultural ties in the urbanizing process that increases the risk of hysteria.

Neutron activation analysis of normal and cadmium injected rat liver using ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate extraction.

A radiochemical group separation using APDC extraction was applied to the neutron activation analysis of normal and cadmium injected rat liver. In order to optimize determinations of induced radionuclides with various half lives, the gamma-ray spectra were obtained after various decay times. Eight elements, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Se and Zn, were determined from rat liver samples within 12 day after irradiation. Although Cd, Cu and Mo in normal rat liver could not be detected by nondestructive method, they could be determined after the extraction. The tendency was seen that the concentration of all the elements as mentioned above are increased by cadmium injection. In particular, zinc and copper exhibited high values.
