The study reports on the motivations of tobacco consumption in various populations of youths in North-Switzerland. A questionnaire obtained from 1436 school-children in the Cantons of Zurich and St. Gall indicated that 9% of the boys and 3% of the girls have tried their first "curiosity-cigarette" before age 6. Among 400 female students of nursing there were 32% smokers, and one of four was smoking more than 20 cigarettes per day. In boarding schools the smoking habits varied according to pedagogic influences. Boys from farming families originating from East-Switzerland were smoking at a rate of 23% between ages 17-21. Girls of similar origin and age were smoking in 14% of the cases. Apprentices of the same age working in the metal industry of the city of Zurich were smoking in 55%, boys from High Schools in 30% of the cases. There were 17% of abstinents from alcohol among non-smokers as compared to 2% among smokers representing a significant difference. In High School-students from Berne there were 23% of smokers as compared to 3% of non-smokers with previous experience with hard drugs. The results of a Health Education Program conducted during three years as a longterm intervention demonstrated that tobacco consumption was significantly reduced in test groups as compared to controls.

In a retrospective study a group of 80-year-old men (114) were compared with regard to their living habits with a group of men from the same firm (131) who had died before the age of 65. The aim of the study was to present factors which could possibly affect the limitation of life expectancy. By means of electronic data processing the findings of the investigation and historical data (family history, personal history, risk factors, physical activity, occupational and social status) were evaluated and possible correlations looked for. The cause of death was particularly included in the interpretation. The risk factors of greatest importance were: cigarette smoking, adiposity, little physical activity.
Studies about life-time sport of different groups of population in Switzerland showed that 82% of 1990 apprentices in the town of Zürich and 59% of young peasants were active in sports in their leisure time. On Saturdays, 45% of the inhabitants of Zürich spent any hours with leisure time sport, on Sundays even 70% (including mountaineering). From seniors (80 years old), 63% were active in sports formerly in their life, from men dead before 65 years from the same factory only 44%.
Representative studies on 1260 men and 980 women working in Swiss factories showed, that 21% of the men and 27% of the women (5% gynecological diseases) were in medical care in the moment of our examination.

An analysis of 144 sports accidents of 275 tennis players in Switzerland (203 men, 72 women) showed fractures of bones in 5,5% open wounds in 14,5%, torsions in 33% and other injuries in 47%. The head was injured in 9,5 and the legs in 76%, the arms in 11,5% and the trunk in 11,5%. Two fifth of all leg injuries were on the left side, three fifth on the right side. The arms were hurt in 98% on the right and only in 2% on the left side. Causes of accidents were in 21% slipping on wet ground, in 17% related to the rackets, in 33% a too speedy start with damage to muscles and tendons, in 14% stepping on tennisballs lying on the ground. A tennis sport accident required an average of 35,8 days of treatment by a medical doctor and an average of 0,7 days of clinical treatment. Already 33% of the men and 26% of the women suffered from the so called "tennis-elbow".
