Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the tongue: report of a case and ultrastructural observations.

A 42-year-old female presented with a 2.5 cm symptomless swelling on the left lateral surface of the tongue. Histologically, there were large, often pleomorphic, fibroblast-like and histiocyte-like cells, multinucleate giant cells and cells of variable morphology. Many of the cells had abundant vesicular cytoplasm. There were also aggregations of neutrophilic or eosinophilic leukocytes, or both. The cells in some areas formed a fascicular or storiform pattern, or both. Ultrastructurally, the vesicular appearance was due mostly to markedly dilated endoplasmic reticulum, but many of the neoplastic cells contained some lipid. There were some myofibroblasts and a few xanthofibroblasts. The cells of variable morphology had many of the ultrastructural features of the fibroblast and histiocyte-like cells. There were also some small undifferentiated cells with minimal cytoplasm. These ultrastructural features confirmed the histological diagnosis of malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

Identical twins with deletion 16q syndrome: evidence that 16q12.2-q13 is the critical band region.

An interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 16 has been identified in identical twins. These patients are strikingly similar phenotypically to previously reported cases of deletion 16q syndrome but differ chromosomally in that their deletion involves the 16q12.2-q13 rather than the 16q21. We propose that the 16q12.2-q13 is the "critical region" in the production of this rare but distinctive phenotype.

Ocular, cerebral and cutaneous malformations: confirmation of an association.

A newborn with multiple congenital abnormalities including an orbital cyst, cerebral cysts, skin tags and focal dermal defects is described. This case is similar to two patients reported by Delleman & Oorthuys in 1981 under the designation "Oculo-cerebro-cutaneous syndrome." Features common to other syndromes are discussed and additional cases with some similarities are also presented. The occurrence of this process in a new population and the cited variability helps confirm and define this association.

An unusual lateral incisor.

The conditions of hypodontia, hyperodontia and connation (fusion or gemination) have been outlined. A case has been reported in which there has been failure of development of a normal maxillary lateral incisor on one side, with an unerupted tooth in this region which exhibited characteristics of a supernumerary tooth; a diagnosis of hypo-hyperodontia is suggested. This has occurred in a patient in whom the deciduous incisors in the same quadrant were connate.

Co-ordinate grids for three-dimensional facial measurements.

Alternative methods for recording the shape of the facial soft tissue integument in three dimensions are discussed. The requirements for and problems associated with head positioning are indicated, and a technique is described by which head positioning errors can be overcome. The results of three-dimensional analysis of a sample of human subjects are described, with particular reference to the method of analysis and orientation planes selected. Finally, possible clinical uses for three-dimensional recording are suggested.
