Regional odontodysplasia.

A case of regional odontodysplasia is reported. An unusual feature, only twice previously described in the world literature of fifty-four cases, was the presence of an apparently normal tooth within the group of affectd teeth. The implications of such a finding for the various theories relating to aetiology and pathogenesis are discussed.

Vascularization of premalignant lesions in carcinogen-treated hamster cheek pouch.

Of 27 lesions induced in Syrian golden hamsters by 12 applications of 0.5% 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in liquid paraffin, 14 showed a static phase of at least 28 days' duration in their life history. Ten static lesions resumed growth, and this was accompanied by clinically obvious vascularization in 8 cases, 7 of which culminated in carcinomas by the end of the study. Because the wall of the normal hamster cheek pouch possesses small nodules whose histologic structure closely resembles that of hyperplastic epithelium, they could be misinterpreted as a product of carcinogenesis.

Substantial genetic variation in southern African black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis).

Thirty protein-coding loci of southern African black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) from four isolated populations were studied using starch gel electrophoresis and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Gene diversity estimates varied between 0.036 and 0.058, with the Zambezi Valley population having the largest amount of protein variation. These levels are higher than those in other studies of genetic variation in black rhinoceros and are similar to the amount of genetic variation observed for outbred natural populations that are not genetically depauperate. Because the observed levels of genetic variation vastly exceed the expectations for current effective population sizes, the current levels apparently reflect large black rhinoceros populations which have existed until recently. Observed levels of genetic variation within populations are consistent with the expectations when recent demographic events are taken into account.

Making the best use of consultant orthodontic services. Part 1: Determining which patients require referral.

General dental practitioners and community dental officers may need to consider several factors when referring patients to the consultant orthodontic service. In Birmingham, a local professional group incorporating representatives from both primary care and secondary care (consultant) services have drawn up a set of formal referral guidelines. The purpose of the exercise was to encourage the most appropriate use of the consultant service so that its resources could be directed towards those in greatest need. In this paper, the factors which determine the patients requiring referral are discussed; a second article will deal with the actual process of referral.
