Thirty-six patients with acute leukemia (31 with AML, 5 with ALL) were classified by FAB criteria, and their bone marrow cells were analyzed cytogenetically with G-banding. Chromosomal abnormalities were found in 16 patients (44%). The most common abnormality was an 8;21 translocation, accounting for 19.4% of all AML patients, that was restricted to patients with M2. In 29 treated AML patients, those with an 8;21 translocation [t(8;21) patients] showed a higher complete remission rate (83%) and a longer median survival (10.7 months) than did other patients with AML; patients with only abnormal metaphases (AA patients) had the lowest complete remission rate (33%) and shortest median survival (2.7 months). There was no difference in the remission rate and survival between patients with only normal metaphases (N patients) and patients with abnormal metaphases (A patients). Three out of five patients with ALL had karyotypic abnormalities; the Philadelphia (Ph1) chromosome was found in one case.
Pathological studies were undertaken on 106 mammary tumours (89 benign, 17 malignant) appearing spontaneously in 95 normal female Sprague-Dawley rats which were killed at Day 756. The benign tumours comprised those with a predominant acinar hyperplasia and those with adenomatous or fibroadenomatous pattern. No significant differences were found histochemically between the acinar cells of the benign tumours and of the lactating gland, except that the amount of fibrous interstitial connective tissue was larger in the former. 3H- or 35S-glycosaminoglycan synthesis by the benign tumours was found to be much higher. The prolactin value in the plasma of the benign-tumour-bearing rats was about 27 times that of 6-month-old virgin rats, and similar to that of rats on the 7th day post partum. Carcinomatous proliferation of tubuloacinar cells could be seen in 5 of the 89 benign tumours. The incidence of benign tumours increases with the age of the rats.
Hypothalamic hamartoma is a rare tumor with onset of symptoms in infancy or early childhood. Clinical presentation includes precocious puberty, laughing spells, and seizures. Computed tomography of two cases of hypothalamic hamartomas revealed a mass lesion in the suprasellar--interpeduncular cisterns (with the density of) the surrounding normal brain. The mass was not enhanced by injection of contrast material.

Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), a potent antiplatelet agent, was evaluated as an antithrombotic agent for haemodialysis in comparison with prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and prostaglandin I2 (PGI2). When antiplatelet action was evaluated, taking the degree of associated hypotension into consideration, PGD2 was found to be superior to PGE1 and PGI2 as the latter two had the negative effect of inducing hypotension, while PGD2 had a less hypotensive effect. The suppression of the platelet function by PGD2 was observed to have only a slight influence on platelet function in systemic blood.

Out of 155 cases of craniopharyngioma seen in the past 47 years, 19 are considered unusual. These 19 cases have been placed under the following headings--1. unusual topography, and 2. associated vascular pathology. Since CT scanning offers important information about extension of craniopharyngiomas, it is very helpful for planning operative approach. However, cerebral angiography is still important for demonstrating vascular pathology.

The glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content of stomach carcinoma tissue was compared with that of non-neoplastic mucosa. GAG synthesis was also studied, by an analysis of 35S-labelled material after incubation of tissue segments in medium containing 35SO4. No significant difference was found between the amount of GAG and its components in the medullary carcinoma tissue and in non-neoplastic mucosa, but GAG synthesis of the carcinoma tissue was at a much higher rate than that of the non-neoplastic mucosa. In the autoradiograph, high 35S uptake in the carcinoma cells was observed. The GAG content of the scirrhous-carcinoma tissue was about twice that of medullary carcinoma.

1. Baroreflex sensitivity was evaluated in 22 non-dialysed patients with chronic renal failure secondary to chronic glomerulonephritis. Baroreflex sensitivity was judged by the slope of the linear regression of the pulse interval on the rise in systolic blood pressure with injection of phenylephrine or reduction by amyl nitrite inhalation. 2. Baroreflex sensitivity was reduced in these patients as compared with normal controls. Reduction of baroreflex sensitivity was significantly greater in nine hypertensive than 13 normotensive patients with chronic renal failure. 3. A significant positive correlation was found between baroreflex sensitivity and motor nerve conduction velocity measured on ulnar nerve in 13 patients examined. 4. Saline was given with high dietary salt intake to seven normotensive patients with chronic renal failure for 2 or 5 days in order to determine whether the severe depression of baroreflex sensitivity can be an initiating factor for hypertension. Blood pressure was raised to hypertensive levels within 5 days in two patients in whom baroreflex sensitivity was nearly as low as that of hypertensive patients, but not in five cases whose baroreflex sensitivity was normal or only mildly depressed. Plasma volume increased to the same degree in both groups. Baroreflex sensitivity did not change in the former two cases despite blood pressure elevation. 5. It is concluded that reduced baroreflex sensitivity in chronic renal failure correlated with the prescence ofhypertension, as well as uraemic neuropathy, and may be one of the pathogenetic mechanisms of hypertension in end-stage chronic glomerulonephritis.
A review of the results of treatment for 155 cases of craniopharyngioma during the past 47 years by the palliative operation was made. Steroid and operative microscope reduced operative mortality and gave more chance of total extirpation, but survival rate was almost unchanged. It is noteworthy that 3 cases who underwent palliative operation more than 30 years ago are still alive and leading useful lives. The quality of survival was somewhat less favorable in pediatric than adult cases. Morbidity frequently encountered in pediatric cases was growth retardaton. Craniopharyngioma is a benign tumor pathohistologically, but it should be considered as malignant because of the region it occurs in. Therefore, no forceful attempt to total extirpation should be made and the operations should, as a rule, be palliative.
Various complications with demand pacemakers have been known to originate from their own sensing mechanisms. In these complications, electromagnetic interference is one of the well known causes of oversensing with demand pacemakers. The influence of low frequency acupuncture as a specific type of electromagnetic interference on a demand pacemaker was examined during a cervical operation. It was found that low frequency acupuncture is a cause of electromagnetic interference with demand pacemakers. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using the low frequency acupuncture on a pacemaker patient.
