Vitamin B6 intakes and 24-hr 4-pyridoxic acid excretions of children.

Vitamin B6 intake and 4-pyridoxic acid excretions of 22 children were determined. Mean intake of vitamin B6 per day was 1.10 mg +/- 0.47. Mean percentage of vitamin B6 intake excreted as 4-pyridoxic acid was 48% +/- 23. Excretion of 4-pyridoxic acid was significantly correlated to vitamin B6 intake but not to vitamin B6/protein ratios or vitamin B6/kilocalorie levels. Excretions of 4-pyridoxic acid equal to or below 0.15 mg appeared to be indicative of poor vitamin B6 intake for the children which was similar to the excretions found by others for depleted adults.

Evaluation of a new gonorrhea culture detection system--Microcult G.C.

A new dehydrated test system (Microcult G.C.), developed by the Ames Company for the detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, was evaluated with stock cultures and fresh isolates. When evaluated against fresh, modified Thayer-Martin (MTM) medium, the new test was slightly less sensitive (81.6% vs 84.2% detection); however, Microcult G.C. has the unique advantage of long room-temperature storage life without deterioration. Thus, it would probably not be used where fresh MTM is readily available, proving most useful in areas where laboratory services are less accessible.

Neonatal meningitis and mastoiditis caused by Hemophilus influenzae.

A newborn infant developed Hemophilus influenzae meningitis associated with acute coalescent mastoiditis and a cutaneous abscess in the mastoid region. Mastoidectomy was followed by prompt recovery from the meningitis, which had failed to clear previously despite antibiotic therapy. Mastoiditis may exist as an infective focus in neonatal meningitis more frequently than has been appreciated. Mastoid roentgenograms are usually the only clue to diagnosis of this infection and should be obtained in patients with neonatal meningitis responding poorly to antibiotic therapy.

Temporal bone resection. Review of 100 cases.

One hundred cases of temporal bone resection for cancer of the ear were reviewed retrospectively, allowing for a survival five-year follow-up period in all cases. Operative technique previously described varied from case to case but essentially involved subtotal resection of the mastoid, petrous pyramid and squamosa of the temporal bone, temporomandibular joint, base of zygoma, and attached adjacent soft tissues. The procedure sacrifices the facial nerve and hearing in the involved ear. Preoperative radiation or a sandwich technique of preoperative and postoperative radiation was used. Many complications were encountered, but with hypotensive agents, high-speed air drills, and adequate coverage of the defect, the death rate was reduced from 10% in 1954 to 5% in recent years. The overall five-year cure rate was 27%, with a 25% cure rate for squamous carcinoma.

Radiologic diagnosis of chondroma and chondrosarcoma of the larynx.

The radiographic findings in chondroma and chondrosarcoma of the larynx basically comprise a discreet soft tissue mass on plain lateral and anteroposterior film, a smooth mucosal outline to the lesion, calcification, with either peripheral or central stippling and ossification. Secondary signs are also noted. Definition of these criteria are illustrated in order to apply these findings to the radiographic diagnosis of chondroma and chondrosarcoma of the larynx.

Variability of creatinine excretion of normal, phenylketonuric and galactosemic children, and children treated with anticonvulsant drugs.

Creatinine per minute excretion rates in individual voidings varied as much as 300-500 percent of the 24-hour value for several children. Creatinine excretion rates were significantly more variable for children treated with anticonvulsant drugs than for normal children. Riboflavin-creatinine ratios determined on individual voidings were variable but adequate although total riboflavin was low. No time of day was found when creatinine excretion was representative of the 24-hour value. The creatinine height index when calculated from timed individual voidings during a 24-hour period varied for some children from 0.5 to more than 1.5 times published norms.

Food habits and nutrient intakes of Filipino women in Los Angeles.

Food habits, dietary changes, and nutrient intakes of forty-seven college-educated, empolyed Filpino women who have moveed from the Philippines to Los Angeles were studied. One-third started drinking mikk in the United STAtes. They said that they were eating more meat, vegetables, frit and less starchy food since they left the Philippines. Eighy per cent continued to eat ricedaily, and seafood was eaten frequently. Daily intakes of protein, niacin, and thiaminment 100 per cent of the 1974 u.s. Recommended Dietary Allowances for almost all subjects, but intakes of calcium and vitamin A were less than two-thrids of the allowances fo 61 and 22 per cent, respectively. The daily caloric intake was higher, with twice as amny calories coming from protein and three times as many from fat as was reported for diets in Philippines.

Evaluation of the gono-tect fluorescent antibody system for confirmation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

An evaluation of the recently developed Abbott Laboratories GONO-tect Fluorescent Antibody (FA) System for confirmation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae was performed using stock cultures and fresh isolates. Tests on more than 350 organisms using the Center for Disease Control reference conjugate and test technique and the standardized GONO-tect reagents and control system were compared. Results indicate the kit to be reliable when used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Immunochemical parameters of some commercial conjugates for the fluorescent treponemal antibody-absorption test.

Fluorescein-labeled anti-human globulins were examined to determine the need for standardization of conjugates used in the fluorescent treponemal antibody-absorption (FTA-ABS) test. Twenty-one of 33 conjugates submitted by commercial manufacturers to the Reagents Control Activity, Venereal Disease Research Laboratory, for evaluation in the FTA-ABS test were available for study. Conjugates, after evaluation in FTA-ABS performance tests, were examined by immunoelectrophoresis, by titration against immunoglobulins G and M (IgG, IgM) with FTA-ABS techniques, and by the biuret protein and fluorescein diacetate methods for determining fluorescein to protein (F/P) ratios. The conjugates were predominately anti-IgG globulin with anti-light-chain activity. Differences were noted in the ability of some conjugates to detect IgM antibody. The F/P ratios of those conjugates that could be determined varied from 2.6 to 17.8 mug of fluorescein per mg of protein. The need to identify and standardize both the immunologic capabilities and the optimum F/P ratio for FTA-ABS test conjugates is presented.
