Administration of lithium carbonate, 750 mg daily, during 10 days to 25 patients with essential granulocytopenia, induced an increase of the total leukocyte count, of the absolute count of neutrophils and of the number of neutrophils phagocytizing Staphylococcus aureus Oxford in vitro. An enhancement of acid phosphatase activity in the neutrophils was noted both in the patients and the healthy subjects in the control group. In the patients, the counts of neutrophils exhibiting a positive enzymatic reaction with regard to beta-glucuronidase, myeloperoxidase and alkaline phosphatase were also increased after treatment with lithium carbonate. Based on these results, the authors recommend the clinical application of this treatment in patients with granulocytopenia.

In 106 workers aged 18 to 56 years, occupationally exposed to organic solvents of paints and varnishes containing benzene, toluene and xylene for 1 to 122 months, the spontaneous and the stimulated reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) in neutrophils was estimated. In all the subjects studied, both the spontaneous and the stimulated reduction of NBT was increased. However, after longer occupational exposure to benzene and its homologues the stimulated NBT reduction decreases. The negative correlation between the number of NBT-positive stimulated neutrophils and the exposure time was noted. The stimulated NBT test may be of value for industrial health control in the estimation of the toxic effects of the above compounds on the neutrophil system.

The activity and intracellular localization of some main lysosomal enzymes such as: acid phosphatase (AP), beta-glucuronidase (GR) and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (GS) in peripheral blood neutrophils and lymphocytes has been studied in a total group of 141 subjects of both sexes aged 18 to 90 years, divided into two age groups consisting of 81 younger controls aged 18 to 42 years and 60 older subjects aged 66 to 90 years. The most important finding concerning the neutrophil system was the decrease in the aged group of enzyme-positive cells not accompanied by alterations of AP and GR intracellular activity whereas the activity of GS was increased in older subjects. The lymphocytes of aged persons were characterized by lack of normal lysosomal granules and diffusion of AP, GR and GS within the cell cytoplasm. The authors discuss the above changes in the neutrophils and lymphocytes of aged persons within the overall present-day knowledge on ageing of the neutrophilic and lymphocytic series.

The authors studied the changes of inositol concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid in 97 neurological patients. The highest values were found in cases of chronic ischalgia or brachial plexus painful syndromes and in multiple sclerosis, and the lowest ones in patients with generalized epileptic seizures. Intermediate values were observed in cases of headaches of different aetiology, in painful spinal syndromes without radiological changes, epidemic vertigo and craniocerebral injuries with brain commotion.
