[Certain parameters of platelets oxygen metabolism in patients with multiple sclerosis].

The hypothesis of Mickel (1975) on multiple sclerosis suggested disturbances of lipid peroxidation in that disease. The purpose of this report was an analysis of oxygen metabolism in platelets in that disease, taking into account the peroxidation of lipids and antioxidant enzymatic protection against oxygen stress. In the reported study the concentration of malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) were determined in multiple sclerosis patients. The studied group comprised 20 non-smoking patients (9 men and 11 women) aged 21-61 years during disease exacerbation. The criteria of disease diagnosis were those suggested by Poser et al (1983). The obtained results may suggest abnormal acceleration of lipid peroxidation in platelets in this disease.

Selenium effect on the growth of carcinogenic fungi and cytotoxic action of aflatoxin B1 on lymphocyte culture and on embryonal development of Xenopus laevis.

The authors report the results of investigations on the protective effect of selenium against teratogenic and cytotoxic action of aflatoxin B1 and the inhibitory action of this element on the growth of fungi producing carcinogenic aflatoxins. Sodium selenate inhibited the growth of cultures of such fungi belonging to the class Fungi imperfecti as Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium meleagrinum and Penicillium rougolosum. Added to cell cultures of lymphocytes sodium selenate inhibited the cytotoxic action of aflatoxin B1 evidenced by inhibition of PHA-stimulated blastic transformation of these cells and reduction in the number of mitoses. Sodium selenate added to the medium in the culture of Xenopus laevis larvae poisoned with aflatoxin B1 reduced significantly the early mortality of embryos and counteracted the teratogenic action of aflatoxin B1. This action was observed, however, only in early phase of morulation. The authors discuss the importance of their observations for the studies on the role of bioelements deficiency in the environment for induction of malignant transformation.

Lymphocyte lysosomal acid phosphatase in patients with carcinoma of the larynx.

The activity of lysosomal acid phosphatase in the peripheral blood lymphocytes was determined by using the method of Barka and Anderson in 20 men with carcinoma of the larynx, untreated. The results were compared with those in 20 healthy subjects. In the patients a statistically significant decrease of the lymphocyte count exhibiting enzyme-positive lysosomal granules was noted but the number of the lymphocytes with granular and diffuse or only diffuse type of cytochemical reaction was significantly increased. The lack of significant differences in the total lymphocyte count between patients and controls suggests the possibility of lysosome disruption and subsequent release of enzymes into the cytoplasm in the patients studied. The anomalies of the enzyme-positive lymphocyte lysosomal equipment are discussed in the light of the data on immunologic alterations in cancer patients, and of those suggesting that acid phosphatase may serve as marker of T cells.

[Effect of calf thymus extracts on the surface structure and the lysosomal apparatus of lymphocytes in patients with chronic lymphatic leukemia].

In 6 patients with chronic lymphatic leukaemia receiving subcutaneously purified calf thymus extract a greater frequency of the following processes was observed: 1) increase in the number of smooth-surface lymphocytes (T cells) in scanning electron microscopy, 2) increased number of lymphocytes forming rosettes with uncoated sheep erythrocytes, 3) increased number of lymphocytes showing high activity of acid phosphatase in cytochemical investigations.

N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase in lymphocytes of patients with Hodgkin's disease, plasma cell myeloma and primary polycythemia.

The N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase activity was cytochemically determined in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of ten patients with Hodgkin's disease, ten with plasma cell myeloma and ten with primary polycythemia as well as in 20 healthy controls. In all the patients studied a significant decrease in the enzyme-positive cell count with decrease of the intracellular content of enzyme-positive cell count with decrease of the intracellular content of enzyme-positive lysosomal granules was noted. These alterations were more marked in the patients with Hodgkin's disease.
