[Acute pulmonary edema induced by CO2 in rats].

High concentrations (FiCO2 0.3) of carbon dioxide in the inspired air provoke acute pulmonary oedema in the vagotomized rats only, the animals dying of acute asphyxia in a few minutes. Vagotomy accelerates the production of pulmonary transudates mainly by increasing capillary-alveolar transmural pressure: tidal volume and pleural depression are largely augmented after stimulation of the respiratory centers by CO2.

[Gaseous emboli in the rat due to hydrogen peroxide (author's transl)].

1) Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) kills the rat in 2 or 3 mn by gaseous emboli due to oxygen formation by blood catalyse activity. Venous return and pulmonary circulation are blocked by numerous bubbles. 2) Letal dose (DL100) H2O2 averages 5 +/- 2 mg 100 g-1 BW by subcutaneous route. Intraperitoneally, 60 mg 100 g-1 BW H2O2 are well tolerated, only 10% rats dying by emboli; 40 mg H2O2 injected in a gas pocket are also well tolerated. 3) Access of the blood stream of oxygen bubbles is limited by some anatomical peculiarities of the venous capillaries, notably hepatic sinusoids.

History, 19th Century↗

Comparative sensitivity of counterimmunoelectrophoresis and double immunodiffusion tests for identification of influenza A viruses in birds isolates.

Fifty cloacal swab specimens which were found positive by haemagglutination after one or two passages in chicken embryonated eggs were examined for the presence of influenza A virus by counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) and double immunodiffusion (DID) with anti-matrix and anti-nucleoprotein sera. CIE was as sensitive as DID with the anti-nucleoprotein serum and more sensitive with the anti-matrix serum when virus from allantoic fluid was concentrated with acid and disrupted with the detergent Sarcosyl. However, when the concentration step was by-passed and the virus was disrupted with Sarcosyl alone, CIE was substantially more sensitive. Forty-nine samples were positive for type A influenza with the anti-matrix serum and 37 with the anti-nucleoprotein serum. By DID, only 16 could be identified with the anti-matrix serum and none could be typed with the anti-nucleoprotein serum. Since CIE with anti-matrix serum is more sensitive than the DID tests, even with unconcentrated infected allantoic fluid, the CIE test is preferred for large-scale identification of influenze A virus in bird isolates.

[Amino liberation in Brown-Norway rats].

When injected intravenously with dextran or O-hydroxyethyl derivatives of rutoside, rat Brown Norway BN/Mai Pfd f exhibit a fall in the blood pressure and an increase of vascular permeability with oedema formation. As the rat is genetically deprived of plasmatic prekallikrein an of kininogens, activation of the kinin system is not necessary neither for mast-cell degranulation nor for amine release.

[Peritoneal reactions to hydrogen peroxide in the rat].

Hydrogen peroxide, when injected in diluted isotonic solution in the peritoneal cavity of the rat, provokes an increase of the local vascular permeability. Histamine plays a minor role in the development of these lesions.

[CO2 and the catecholamine content of the adrenal medulla of the rat].

In Wistar rats exposed during one hour to mixtures of oxygen and carbon dioxide producing hypoxia, hypercapnia, hyperoxia and hypocapnia, and so on, adrenaline contents of the suprarenals is reduced by high concentration of carbon dioxide (30%), with or without hypoxia. Noradrenaline contents is increased by carbon dioxide (15 to 30%). Hypercapnia is more potent than hypoxia as a suprarenal stimulus.
