1. Rat serum levels in beta-glucuronidase and beta-galactosidase are higher than plasma levels. Rat platelets release these lysosomial enzymes during blood coagulation in vitro. 2. After anaphylactic shock, in the sensitized rat, there is no increase in beta-galactosidase and beta-glucuronidase plasma levels. The tissues of the sensitized rat do not release these enzymes during the antigen-antibody reaction. The blood platelet level is diminished after anaphylactic shock and the serum levels of the lysosomial enzymes are decreased. 3. In thrombopenic rat, anaphylactic shock is identical as in control animals. Rat platelets do not play a significant role in the anaphylactic shock.
When immersed in plain water at 40 degrees C, normal young adults experience an important increase in the heart rate. beta adrenergic receptor blockade by propranolol (40 and 80 mg) reduces this tachycardia by 25%. The increase in the heart rate depends on orthosympathetic stimulation, on parasympathetic inhibition and on a Q10 effect related to the blood temperature acting on the sino-auricular node.
Pretreatment of actively IgG sensitized Wistar rats with indomethacin, diethylcarbamazine or phenidone respectively, does not modify the evolution of the anaphylactic shock. Neither prostaglandins nor leukotrienes seem to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of this vascular collapse.
1. In the rat, pulmonary embolism induced by intravenous administration of gaseous carbon dioxide increases intrapulmonary water content. When the rat is vagotomized before emboli are produced, an important lung edema is found. 2. Strong respiratory stimulation with lung hyperinflation seems to be the cause of this facilitated alveolar transudation. 3. Mechanical factors operating after pulmonary embolism are those which explain transudation after inhalation of hypercapnic gas mixtures in vagotomized rats.
In rats anesthetized by pentobarbital, hyperoxia, induced by inhalation of 100% O2 for 5 minutes, provokes transient bradycardia and long lasting systemic arterial hypertension. Pure oxygen initially depresses ventilation for 3 minutes. Blockade of alpha 1 adrenergic receptors does not suppress arterial hypertension, which appears to be due to a direct vasoconstriction.

Conjugated urinary catecholamines are increased during normal human pregnancy. The modification in the proportions of conjugated fractions are particularly significant for norepinephrine. They depend on the foetoplacental unit since delivery is followed by a reduction of the urinary concentrations of these conjugated fractions. Such a modification of catecholamine metabolism must be kept in mind when the level of sympathetic nervous system activity is studied during pregnancy.

Antigenic relationships among the matrix proteins of influenza A viruses were analysed using a competitive radioimmunoassay technique. There were at least two antigenic determinants on the M protein of A/PR/8/34 virus. One antigenic determinant was shared by several influenza A viruses of human, avian, swine or equine origin, while the second determinant was not necessarily shared by all influenza viruses since it was not detected on the M protein of A/chicken/Germany/N/49 virus. In addition, the cross-reactive determinant(s) of the M protein of N virus was not equally represented in other influenza A virus subtypes.
As part of the international program on the ecology of influenza virus in animals sponsored by W.H.O., 357 influenza A viruses isolated from 2 293 cloacal samples collected from ducks and other bird species in Eastern Canada during the 1978 season were characterized antigenically. Seven hemagglutinin (Hsw 1, H2, H3, Hav2, Hav4, Hav6, Hav7) and six neuraminidase subtypes (N1, N2, Neq2, Nav1, Nav5, Nav6) in 18 different combinations were found. A comparison with viruses isolated during previous seasons indicates that subtypes do change from year-to-year and from place-to-place. Isolation of few viruses from passerine birds requires additional studies to determine if these species are truly infected with influenza virus in nature. This large reservoir of influenza A viruses circulating at the same time in ducks may well be involved in the appearance of new viruses in other species, including humans.
