[Neonatal percentile values for East Germany--1985. 3. On the correlation of body height and weight of the mother in a two-dimensional classification of newborn infants according to birth weight and gestational age].

There were published percentiles of birthweight in relation to bodyheight of the mother as well as in relation to bodyweight and parity, bodyheight and bodyweight of the mother for term range 37th to 41st week of pregnancy. They were calculated through median quantities. The dates again derive from the investigation of 51,570 single births in elected regions of GDR in 1984 and 1985. The length of pregnancy was stated in full weeks. It was determined on the base of three parameters (by Naegele method, by sonography, and by neonatal maturity judgment). Selected percentiles of birthweight regarding the above influencing factors, distributed into sex, were summarized for use in practice.

[Results of a 2-year intervention for the modification of atherosclerosis precursors in school children].

801 children aged 10-11 years were examined in 1984, before an allocation in two groups (intervention vs. control). The scope of the intervention was to modify mean values of blood pressure, total cholesterol and smoking through relevant modification of knowledge and behavior. An intermediate assessment, conducted 2 years after the first exam, showed better knowledge regarding cardiovascular diseases and more sport practice in the intervention group, although smoking habits were only slightly modified. Diet, body weight, blood pressure and blood lipid levels did not show any significative differences. The study is now ongoing.

[Diagnosis of biophysical status in pregnancy].

Based on 6,490 cardiotocographic examinations and numerous following diagnostic investigations a combined cardiotocographic and sonographic management during pregnancy care is recommended. The management starts with a non-stress-test (NST). Two acceleration (greater than 15 seconds, greater than 15 bpm) recorded within 10 or more minutes are a sign of fetal well-being. In order to differentiate between physiological- and pathologically suspicious heart frequency patterns a mechanical or acoustic provocation test is recommended. The dorsal transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (20 mA) is an effective continuous stimulus to wake up the fetus. The nipple stimulation test is the best physiological contraction stress test. The oxytocin challenge test may be replaced by the nipple stimulation. The following sonographic parameters of fetal condition are summarized to the fetal biophysical profile (FBP): body movements, breath movements, tonus and amniotic fluid volume. All these, together with the result of non-stress-testing, give the FBP-score. The predictive value of combined cardiotocographic and sonographic examination is much higher than the NST alone. An FBP-score less than or equal to 6 is an indication for the hospitalization. A score less than 4 with verified signs of maturity is an indication for the induction of labor.

[Quality assessment in neonatology].

After discussing some general factors influencing the result of medical care at all (socio-economic conditions, biological factors), the difficulties of neonatal quality control compared with the assessment of quality in obstetric care are pointed out (greater variability of the data, evaluation of long-term effects). In addition to the obstetric system of data collection a similar evaluation of neonatal data is recommended to be introduced and definitions for general use are given. The recommendations are based on own investigations of the predictive value of some data gained within the perinatal period (history, physical examination, laboratory tests etc.). The high expenditures of personnel and equipment, at present, don't allow a nationwide introduction of such records. But in future perinatal centers should collect their data in an unique way according to this recommendations for comparing the efficiency of perinatal care in voluntary programs of quality control. The experiences collected by those analyses will be of great value concerning planning the design of a nationwide data recording system in perinatal medicine.

Purification of a bovine liver S6 kinase.

A bovine liver protein serine kinase that catalyzes the multisite phosphorylation of ribosomal protein S6 has been purified to near homogeneity. The enzyme has an Mr of 67,000 on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and an apparent molecular weight of 55,000 on glycerol gradient sedimentation. Its enzymic properties, substrate specificity, molecular size and chromatographic behaviour are similar to those of the principal growth factor--and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate-stimulated S6 kinase of cultured cells.

Proteolytic activities in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of interstitial lung diseases: correlation to stage and prognosis.

In 18 patients with sarcoidosis, 10 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), 6 patients with exogen allergic alveolitis (EAA), and 9 control persons we investigated proteolytic activities in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). In lymphocyte-macrophage alveolitis (i.e. sarcoidosis and EAA) proteolytic activities in BALF were low, but the activities correlated with lung function deterioration within 1 year. In IPF (i.e. in neutrophil alveolitis) we found a striking correlation between proteolytic activities and stage of disease: high activities correlated with early stages, lower values with late stages of IPF. Measurement of proteolytic activity in BALF seems to be of interest to differential diagnosis and to prognosis of interstitial lung disease.

Atherosclerosis precursors in schoolchildren--results of a two-year intervention study.

In order to reduce precursors of atherosclerosis, an intervention trial was carried out in pupils aged 10-11 years at the time of inclusion into the study (5th graders). The main goal of the study was to encourage health-promoting behaviour patterns--mostly present in the schoolchildren at that time--such as non-smoking, a negative attitude toward future smoking, a high level of physical activity including sports. The study design included dietary measures aimed at lowering blood pressure and total cholesterol values. Follow-up examination, performed at an interval of 2 years, revealed the following results: significantly lower mean total cholesterol values in girls attending the intervention schools; a significantly lower prevalence of smoking and a decrease in the number of casual smokers--compared with data obtained in the 5th grade--in the intervention schools; a negative attitude towards smoking and the extent of sport activities remained at the level of the 5th grade in the intervention schools.
