Eighteen patients with T1 transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder were submitted to transurethral resection of the tumor, followed by Cobalt therapy (5,500 rads to the pelvis and 6,500 rads to the bladder in six weeks). The recurrence rate at three years follow-up was 33% (6/18). Recurrence of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is a well known condition in stage O and A, even when low grade is present. Recurrence rates at one year as high as 84% (Loening et al., 1983) are reported in the current literature. In recent years many studies have been performed which were oriented to the use of intravesical chemotherapy in order to reduce the recurrence rate (Adolphs and Bastian, 1983; Huland, 1983; Loening et al., 1983; National Bladder Cancer Collaborative Group A, 1977; Rodriguez and Caserta, 1983; Zincke et al., 1983) of this tumor. We started a protocol on treatment of the transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder in 1963. The protocol calls for transurethral resection of the tumor followed by Cobalt therapy. This is an interim report on stage T1 (stage A) with such a treatment.
Thirty-two patients with primary carcinoma of the ureter were treated at our institution from 1961 to 1968 using various modes of therapy. Sixteen of these patients underwent segmental resections, with a five-year survival of 71.4 per cent and a ureteral recurrence rate of 6 per cent. Twelve other patients received a complete nephroureterectomy, with a subsequent five-year survival of 50 per cent. We believe that segmental resection is indicated for all low-grade and low-stage primary ureteral tumors regardless of their location and with a small change for recurrence.

In order to characterize further the in vitro liver microsomal O-demethylation and defluorination of the volatile anesthetic methoxyflurane, and obtain additional information regarding the participation of cytochrome P-450 in the oxidation, the stoichiometry of the reaction was determined and the effect of antibody to cytochrome P-450 reductase on this unique biotransformation was examined. Liver microsomes were isolated from rabbits and rats in which enzyme induction had previously been produced by phenobarbital. The O-demethylation of methoxyflurane by phenobarbital-induced microsomes results in the production of 1 mol of formaldehyde for every 2 mol of fluoride ion produced. Dichloroacetic acid is also a product of methoxyflurane O-demethylation. Antibody to cytochrome P-450 reductase inhibits by 85% the amount of fluoride ion produced by the microsomal metabolism of methoxyflurane. Thus critical indirect supportive data are contributed to the hypothesis that at least one, but perhaps more, cytochrome P-450 is indeed responsible for methoxyflurane O-demethylation and defluorination.
A balanced reciprocal translocation t(Y;3)(q11.2q12) is detected in an azoospermic male, with a normal phenotype. Replication study shows no modification of the replication pattern of the bands of the rearranged chromosomes. Meiotic studies show a chain element at diakinesis. At the pachytene stage, the Y-body is in external contact with the sex vesicle. It is concluded that the integrity of the Y-chromosome is probably necessary for a normal meiotic process, and is more important than dosage effect due to complete or partial disomy of this chromosome.
Dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine is the principal component of lung surfactant, and knowledge of its behavior as a film spread at the air-water interface is essential for understanding how lung surfactant itself works. We therefore studied the collapse rates of very low surface tension air-water monolayers of dipalmitoyl, dimyristoyl, and palmitoyl-myristoyl phosphatidylcholines at different temperatures. In each case we found that the monolayers abruptly became unstable at temperature 3-4 degree C above their bulk lipid-water phase transition temperatures (Tc). This accords with a comparable increase in Tc occurring in bulk systems subjected to high pressure. These findings are also consistent with the behavior of isolated rat lungs, which have been found to require higher transmural pressures to maintain a given volume on deflation when kept at temperature above the Tc of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine.

Increase in kidney size and weight was studied in 392 kidneys from 196 dead pre- and full-term infants. The kidneys, whose three main dimensions were measured with Vernier calipers, were rigorously chosen: premature infants from pathological pregnancies or born with developmental defects and stillbirths were excluded from this study. All the kidneys used were normal. The three-dimensional reference curves for kidney growth as a function of size, weight and age of the fetus had not been established before, and should allow a better quantification of anomalies of renal development.
Our study was performed to evaluate potential adverse effects on the kidney caused by an occupational exposure to cadmium, lead, and mercury, respectively. We examined 81 individuals of a Zn-Cd-plant and of a Ni-Cd-battery factory, occupationally exposed to cadmium. In a chemical company, synthesizing mercury-compounds, we analyzed 23 exposed workers. The 21 persons with an exposure to lead were employed in a secondary lead smelting plant. To evaluate the degree of the occupational exposure we analyzed the concentrations of the heavy metals in blood and urine samples. As indicators of an adverse effect on the kidney the renal elimination of specific proteins was determined. The analysis of proteins with a higher molecular weight, such as albumine and acid alpha 1-glycoproteine, was performed using a new developed laser nephelometric method. Patterns of renal eliminated proteins with a lower molecular weight were characterized applying radio immunological determination of beta 2-microglobuline. The results found in workers exposed to cadmium verified previous studies. The occurrence of a characteristic beta 2-microglobulinuria takes place after a sufficient long period of exposure. In addition to this, cadmium exposed workers had an increased elimination of total proteine. Persons with an exposure to mercury also showed a slightly increased elimination of beta 3-microglobuline and total proteine. An intensive long exposure to mercury and its (in-) organic compounds seems to induce an increased renal elimination of proteins. No increased renal elimination was found in persons occupationally exposed to lead.
A patient with partial deletion 3p is reported. Only one other patient has been previously reported in the literature. Features the two share include microcephaly, failure to thrive, ptosis, symophrys, a broad and flat nose, a prominent maxilla, an over developed chin, and an increased number of loops on the finger tips. These observations are compared in type and countertype with known observations of trisomy 3p and of 3q duplication/3p deletion.

Increases in foetal renal size and weight were studied respectively in 232 and 160 different kidneys. All the organs are obtained from autopsy specimens, dead pre and full-term infants rigorously chosen; their ages ranging from 26 to 41 weeks of gestation. All the renal increases are in agreement with either the body length or the birth weight of the foetuses. With these data, the human kidney growth can be analysed quantitatively. This could be useful for the diagnosis by ultrasound in evaluating certain patients during the last three months. Confrontation of these values with the histological aspects shows different developmental stages. The kidney is a good index for gestational age assessment. The ureteral development was studied in 54 ureters from 27 foetuses with the same characteristics. Quantitative determinations by the point counting method of the different areas allows analysis of the myogenesis and of the evolution of the ureteral lumen area according to gestational age. Myogenesis is important up to around the 36th week, corresponding to nephrogenesis achievement. These modifications of the ureteral wall structure are accompanied by the slow and late connective tissue differenciation. They could explain the decrease of the luminal area during this foetal period and after birth.
