C-cell tumours of the thyroid in the horse.

The clinical and pathological aspects of two cases of C-cell (parafollicular cell) tumours of the thyroid are described. Both the horse and the pony presented with a paralaryngeal mass and a history of constant gulping. Ultrastructural examination of the tumours demonstrated that they were composed of C-cells containing typical, membrane-bound secretory granules. The pony is alive and well three years after surgery and the horse has raced successfully following removal of the tumour.

Rapid serological diagnosis of Aspergillus fumigatus infection of the frontal sinuses and nasal chambers of the dog.

Aspergillus fumigatus precipitins in dog sera were detected by counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE). The procedure gave results within 90 minutes compared with 72 to 96 hours required in agar-gel double diffusion. Culture-filtrate antigens from two-week-old cultures of A fumigatus and two-day-old mycelial antigens produced the strongest reactions in CIE tests and the former antigen also revealed high titres in tests with serum from seven of 14 dogs with A fumigatus precipitins. Serum from these 14 dogs also reacted in CIE tests with a number of Penicillium species antigens.

Termination of early pregnancy in ewes by use of a prostaglandin analogue and subsequent fertility.

Of 87 Dorset ewes injected at 20 to 60 days of pregnancy with either 125 micrograms or 250 micrograms of the prostaglandin F2 alpha analogue, cloprostenol, 72 (83%) were detected in oestrus by teaser rams within 7 days. A total of 60 ewes mated with fertile rams 14 to 28 days after treatment and 36 of these (60%) subsequently lambed. Thirty-eight ewes mated with fertile rams 29 to 56 days after treatment and 30 of these (79%) subsequently lambed. The difference in fertility between the 2 periods was not significant. Six additional ewes which did not respond to the cloprostenol lambed normally within 6 weeks. They were more than 100 days pregnant when treated. In ewes which first exhibited oestrus by 7 days of treatment, plasma progesterone concentrations fell from near 4 ng/ml to 0.6 ng/ml within 48 h of treatment. In ewes not detected in oestrus progesterone concentrations did not decrease to similar low levels (1.4 ng/ml; t-test p less than 0.005). Concentrations in the 6 ewes treated near 100 days of pregnancy dropped from 7.4 to 4.4 ng/ml over 48 h. Overall, the progesterone concentrations indicated that 92% of ewes treated at 20 to 60 days of pregnancy experienced rapid luteolysis in response to the cloprostenol. There were no differences between the 2 doses of cloprostenol in the responses or subsequent fertility of the ewes.

Histology of salivary gland infarction in the dog.

Salivary gland infarction was found in two adult dogs. The main changes were ischaemic necrosis, capsular fibrosis and regenerative hyperplasia of surviving ductal epithelium. Necrosis of arterial tunica media and thrombosis were found only in the infarcted parts of the salivary glands. The lesions appeared to be confined to the salivary glands; no cause of the infarction was found.

Hemivertebra in the dog: clinical and pathological observations.

The clinical and radiographic findings associated with the presence of hemivertebra ("wedge-shaped"vertebra) in small and brachycephalic breeds of dogs are reported together with the results of post mortem examination in the availabel cases. The condition is characterised clinically by progressive hind-leg weakness, spinal pain, abnormalities of the nervous system and evidence of muscle atrophy or other abnormalities of conformation. Confirmation of the clinical diagnosis is by radiography. It is suggested that the condition is congenital in origin. Breed incidences are reported. The occurrence of the disorder in certain families of dogs suggests also that it may be hereditary. Other congenital abnormalities are seen in some dogs affected by hemivertebrae.

Pectineus muscle resection as a treatment for hip dysplasia in dogs.

Pectineus muscle resection was performed on 100 dogs with hip dysplasia. The degree of dysplasia was estimated by radiography and by joint manipulation. The effects of the procedure on 81 dogs were determined by personal reinspection (34), or by means of owner-reports (47). Improvement was noted in 80 per cent but only 35 per cent reached a high level of recovery. The operation has a role in the treatment of hip dysplasia but it does not cure the condition and it will be several years before the long-term results are known.
