A prospective controlled study of the psychological effects of elective interval and postpartum tubal sterilization was carried out on a selected sample of women. Subjects were interviewed pre-operatively (n = 138) and one year post-operatively (n = 116; 83%), using standardized instruments and procedures, including the Present State Examination. No differences within or between sterilization and control groups were found over the follow-up year in the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity, which was no higher than would be expected in a general population sample. Beneficial effects of sterilization were reported on a number of psychosexual variables. Adverse effects such as regret or deterioration in marital relationship were rare, but were more likely to occur in postpartum subjects, among whom abdominal pain was also reported more commonly at one year follow-up than pre-operatively. The relevance of "normal" postnatal events and of the role of pre-operative counselling are considered in relation to these findings. Less favourable outcome at one year follow-up was commonly associated with higher PSE scores pre-operatively.
The incidence of slipping accidents is unknown, but accident and emergency departments in the United Kingdom probably treat over one million injuries per annum caused by slipping of the feet. Many injuries to farm livestock are caused by slipping. Previous research led to speculation that some animal species may have developed slip-resistant feet and the polar bear was chosen for a study of adaption to a slippery environment. Feet were photographed and a footpad was sectioned and examined by light and electron microscopy. Hardness of the footpads of two tranquillized bears was measured. The footpads were found to have a rough papillary surface overlying a soft dermis containing a dense network of collagen and elastic fibres. These findings support a hypothesis that shoe solings for use on an icy substrate should be soft with a hardness value in the region of 24 on the Shore A scale. The surface should be covered in conical projections having a mean diameter of 1 mm. Further work on the feet of animal species could lead to a better understanding of slip-resistance and reduce injuries to humans and livestock.

There is a need for closer collaboration between the medical and veterinary professions, particularly in tropical countries. Fields in which such liaison is likely to prove most fruitful are zoonoses and public health, nutrition and disease prevention and the production and study of animal models of human disease.
During the investigation of somatosensory evoked cortical potentials arising from a complex vibro-tactile stimulus to the forefingers, an abnormal lack of lateralisation of response was found in 10 out of 21 schizophrenic patients. Eight patients with severe affective illness all had the expected degree of lateralisation of cortical potentials, as did 12 out of 15 normals. Three normals and 3 schizophrenic patients had a loss of lateralisation of the evoked response on stimulation of one hand but a normal lateralisation on stimulation of the other. The considerable technical problems of this and related techniques are discussed, but it is suggested that further exploration of this technique is justified. At this stage, no conclusion can be drawn about the cause of the abnormalities.

Pigeons treated orally with 125 mg clavulanate-potentiated amoxycillin for seven days showed no adverse reactions. The drug had a marked depressive effect on the faecal flora but this had returned to normal 10 days after cessation of treatment. When administered to pigeons with an experimental Staphylococcus aureus infection of the feet no clinical response was apparent and there was no evidence of a diminution in the inflammatory process.
The use of cystoscopy is advocated as an aid to the early differential diagnosis of disease of the canine bladder. Techniques are described for carrying out urethroscopy and cystoscopy in both male and female dogs using modern medical diagnostic instruments. Males were examined with flexible paediatric bronchofibrescopes, which permitted urethroscopy and cystoscopy, but to obtain extensive biopsies or undertake cauterisation of the bladder surface with rigid endoscopes, a simple perineal urethrostomy was necessary. The bladder of females, on the other hand, was examined by cystoscopy and biopsied using standard rigid cystoscopes and resectoscopes.

A variety of changes was seen in the respiratory tract of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) infected with a Capillaria species. The main lesions were those of bronchopneumonia and tracheitis.
Healthy multiparous women having elective interval (N = 69) or postpartum (N = 69) sterilization were interviewed pre-operatively and 6 weeks and 6 months post-operatively, using standardized instruments. They did not differ significantly from control samples of comparable non-sterilized women with respect to mental state (Present State Examination) or subjectively-assessed mental or physical health or abdominal pain. More sterilization subjects than control subjects reported subjectively experienced improvement in sexual satisfaction at the later follow-up. Reports of poor physical health and abdominal pain increased over time within both the sterilization and the control groups. Reports of adverse effects at follow-up were often associated with higher PSE scores initially. Regrets and wish for reversal were rare and were also associated with higher initial PSE scores. Since the adverse effects were more common among postpartum subjects, it is suggested that subjectively experienced sequelae of sterilization may sometimes be attributable to 'normal' postnatal events.
