[A comparative follow up study about intellectual and motoric development of premature births at three to eight years of life (author's transl)].

In a study involving 361 cases an average IQ for 101 was noted; the premature birth groups showed an average IQ of 99 and the control group an average IQ of 102. Statistically significant was the occurrence of mental retardation in the premature birth group when compared with the control group. In the premature birth group an delayed walking ability showed a correlation to a diminished birth weight. A correlation between a low asphyxion-Index and IQ could not be ascertained. In the areas of speech development, walking ability and bladder control no significant differences were noted between premature birth and control group.

Studies by small-angle X-ray scattering of the quaternary structure of the beta-haemocyanin of Helix pomatia.

Helix pomatia beta-haemocyanin was studied in solution by small-angle X-ray scattering. The following molecular parameters were determined: molecular weight = 9.02 X 10(6), volume = 14000 nm3, radius of gyration = 18.4 nm, radius of the spherical subunits = 2.5 +/- 0.2 nm. With these data, and with information of dissociation products described in a former paper, a model of the molecule was built whose theoretical scattering curve showed good agreement with the experimental one. The model consists of 160 spherical subunits of a radius of 2.5 nm; 12 rings each built up of 10 spheres form the outer wall of a hollow cylinder; 20 subunits are situated at the inner side of each end.

Studies by small-angle x-ray scattering of the quaternary structure of dissociation products of the beta-haemocyanin of Helix pomatia.

Helix pomatia beta-haemocyanin was split into dissociation products by varying the pH and the ionic strength. The purity of the solution was checked in an ultracentrifuge. Two defined dissociation products were studied in solution by small-angle X-ray scattering. In Tris-HC1 buffer, pH 8.0 and ionic strength 1 M, the following parameters of the dissociation product (tenths) could be determined: molecular weight = 7 x 10(5), volume = 1350 nm3, radius of gyration = 9.0 nm, maximal distance = 28.3 nm, radius of the spherical subunits about 2.6 nm, number of the subunits approximately 19. Tris-HC1 buffer, pH 8.7 and ionic strength 0.01 M, yielded dissociation products (twentieths) with the following parameters: molecular weight = 3.5 x 10(5), volume = 635 nm3, radius of gyration = 7.5 nm, maximal distance = 21.9 nm, radius of the spherical subunits about 2.5 nm. With this information, the assumption that the larger fragment was double the smaller one and the latest biochemical and morphological results, theoretical scattering curves of models were calculated and compared with the experimental curves. Two models are suggested which argee well with the dissociation products in radius of gyration and scattering.

Convergent and parallel evolution: a model illustrating selection, phylogeny and phenetic similarity.

A model is proposed which considers the structural relationships of body characteristics and their role in a concept wherein the phylogenetic relationship of the organisms under study is interpreted as constituting degrees of convergent or parallel evolution. The model also accounts for the relationships between selection pressures, phylogeny, and phenetic expression. The phenomena of convergent and parallel evolution are based upon the observations of similar characteristics, the geometric concept, magnitude and similarity of selection pressures, and the phylogenetic relationship of the groups in question.

HLA in different forms of chronic active hepatitis. A comparison between adult patients and children.

108 adult patients and 34 children with chronic active hepatitis (CAH) are divided in four groups on the basis of presence and absence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and autoantibodies (AutoAb). There are significant differences in the numeric distribution among the four groups and the sex distribution between adult patients and children, but no differences in the frequencies of the HLA antigens tested. An increased frequency of HLA-B8 (and HLA-A1) compared with normal controls and the other groups is only found in autoimmune types of CAH, characterized as HBsAg-negative, AutoAb-positive CAH. HBsAg-negative, AutoAb-negative forms of CAH are called cyptogenic CAH and these are most likely non-hepatitis B virus induced types of CAH. In these and hepatitis B virus induced forms of CAH no significant deviation of any HLA antigen tested could be found.

Levamisole: anthelmintic activity in calves following dermal application.

A series of seven experiments designed to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of levamisole (1-tetramisole) by dermal application is described. This work involved use of 181 artificially infested calves. The drug was formulated at a concentration of 10% m/v levamisole base in a solvent system promoting dermal absorption and was applied to both sides of the spine in the lumber region at a dose rate of 10 mg levamisole base per kg livemass. A consistent performance was achieved in these investigations, the results from all of which were based upon necropsy findings. Efficacy of treatment was assessed against the third and fourth larval stages and fifth stage larvae/adult worms of six nematode species; the respective efficacies obtained were Haemonchus placei 72,0%; 99,3%; and 100%: Ostertagia ostertagi 85,5%; 38,1% and 74,5%: Cooperia spp. 98,9%; 99,9% and 100%: Bunostomum phlebotomum 83,0%; 100% and 98,5%: Oesophagostomum radiatum 47,4%; 94,9% and 99,6% and Dictyocaulus viviparus 79,5%; 94,1%; 90.9% (fifth stage larvae) and 93,8% (adult worms). The anthelmintic efficacy of levamisole in these experiments is of the same order as that achieved by orthodox methods of administration at dose rates between 7,5 and 10,0 mg levamisole HC1 per kg livemass. These findings add a new dimension to the use of levamisole and to anthelmintic therapy in general.

Glomerular changes in patients with cirrhosis of the liver.

Deposits with IgA as the main component frequently are found in the glomeruli of patients with cirrhosis of the liver. These deposits usually are latent. In some cases, however, they may be associated with proliferative changes and clinical manifestations of glomerular involvement.

[Histocompatibility-(HLA) antigens in patients with HBsAg positive and negative hepatitis and healthy carriers of HBsAg and anti-HBs. (author's transl)].

New own data and a survey of published data concerning the frequencies of 23 HLA antigens in patients with HBsAg positive and negative chronic active hepatitis (CAH) and healthy carriers of Hepatitis-surface antigen (HBsAg) and high titers of antibodies to HBaAg (Anti-HBs) allow to conclude as follows: 1. Patients with CAH and persistence of HBsAg show a normal frequency of HLA-B8. 2. There is no increased frequency of HLA-B8 in HBsAg negative CAH without autoimmune antibodies. 3. Only in patients with HBsAg negative CAH with autoimmune antibodies is the frequency of HLA-B8 is statistically significantly increased (p less than 0.01 after correction for the number of antigens and different groups of patients compared). These are patients with the autoimmune form of CAH. 4. There exist no significant differences in the frequencies of the HLA antigens tested in patients with HBsAg positive CAH and healthy carriers of HBsAg and Anti-HBs. Thus no indications could be found for HLA-associated factors in the different behaviour to the hepatitis-B virus.

The genetic code and the origin of life.

The problem of the origin of life understandably counts as one of the most exciting questions in the natural sciences, but in spite of almost endless speculation on this subject, it is still far from its final solution. The complexity of the functional correlation between recent nucleic acids and proteins can e.g. give rise to the assumption that the genetic code (and life) could not originate on the Earth. It was Portelli (1975) who published the hypothesis that the genetic code could not originate during the history of the Earth. In his opinion the recent genetic code represents the informational message transmitted by living systems of the previous cycle of the Universe. Here however, we defend the existence of a certain strategy in the syntheses of the genetic code during the history of the Earth. The strategy of correlation between amino acid and nucleotide polymers made an increasing velocity of the chemical evolution possible, that is, it increased the velocity of formation of the genetic code. Thus, life with the recent genetic code could originate on the Earth within the present cycle of the Universe.

Clinical evaluation of amikacin in treatment of infections due to gram-negative aerobic bacilli.

The efficacy and safety of amikacin were evaluated in 42 patients with infections presumed to be due to gram-negative rods. The dosage of 7.5 mg of amikacin/kg every 12 hr was administered intramuscularly to 32 patients and intravenously to seven patients; three patients with renal impairment were given a modified regimen. The duration of treatment was three to 51 days (mean, 9.6 days). Of 19 patients with acute pyelonephritis, five had positive blood culture results. Ten patients had chronic urinary infection, and isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from four of these patients acquired resistance to amikacin during therapy. Of seven patients with gram-negative bacteremia from sources other than the urinary tract, four showed satisfactory and three had less than optimal responses to therapy with amikacin. Two patients with chronic osteomyelitis or soft tissue infection improved but subsequently relapsed. Two patients with acute febrile illness, in whom the etiologic agent was unidentified, recovered. Serial audiograms revealed no change in 26 of 27 patients; one had a significant deterioration in hearing. A transient rise in the level of serum creatinine was noted in three patients. Serial tests of liver function revealed no abnormalities.

[Influence of standardization upon the results of serological analysis of toxoplasmosis (author's transl)].

It is the purpose of this paper to determine whether the decline of the serologically verified acute Toxoplasma gondii infections observed since the late sixties and found in literature has been caused by epidemiological factors or whether the standardization of serological methods (10) introducted in 1966/66 for the determination of antibodies specific to Toxoplasma gondii has been responsible. The paper is based on material of the prospective study, "Pregnancy and child development" supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Mainly six laboratories did the serological analysis for antibodies against T. gondii from 1964 to 1970. The following results were obtained: 1. Laboratories using the standardization observed a decline of the highly positive dilution starting in 1968 (Fig. 1, Table 1). 2. The proportion of the samples positive in the dye test did not change (Fig. 1). 3. The proportion of sera reacting in the complement fixation test (CFT) with a dilution of 1:5 increased. But after introduction of the standardization more sera were analyzed by both the dye and complement fixation tests than before (Table 2, Fig. 2). 4. The proportion of sera found positive by the complement fixation test increased slightly up to 1968 (Fig. 3). 5. Differences in the age structure (Fig. 4) or dietary habits of the group (Fig. 5) did not cause the changes in titer. 6. Therefore the standardization was introduced a considerable proportion of the sera showing dye test results of more than 1:1000 reacted negatively to the complement fixation test (Table 4). These cases were probably not acute infections. 7. When the standardization was introduced the difference between results of first and second analysis decreased for sera with titers smaller then 1:256 (increased of reliability) (Table 5, Fig. 7). 8. Complement fixation titer show an analogous behavior. (Table 7 and 8). The results detained above show that the decrease, observed since 1969, of the cases of acute Toxoplasma infections verified by serological methods is not caused by epidemiological but rather by methodical factors.
