Radiation-induced formation of apoptotic bodies in rat thymus.

The process of interphase death of thymocytes in whole-body X-irradiated rats were studied. Cell size distribution analysis indicates that cell fragments (= apoptotic bodies) appeared in the thymus and increased in number depending on dose (200-1000 R) and time (2-6 hr) after irradiation with corresponding decrease in normal-size thymocytes. Occurrence of nuclear fragmentation in association with the cellular fragmentation was proved with cytofluorometric determination of DNA content in individual cells. Scanning electron microscopic observations also revealed extensive fragmentation of cells in the irradiated rat thymus. The results show clearly that cells as well as nuclei fragment rapidly into smaller pieces of various sizes in the irradiated rat thymus as commonly observed with apoptosis.

[Familial occurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma].

The occurrence of familial medullary carcinoma in the thyroid is a well-known entity, but cases of familial papillary carcinoma have been rarely reported. A case of thyroid papillary carcinoma which occurred almost synchronously in a mother and her two daughters is presented. No significant difference between familial and nonfamilial papillary carcinoma was noted in clinical, histopathological and chemical findings. The pedigree of our case is considered to show autosomal dominant inheritance.

[A clinical study on the penetration of aspoxicillin into tissue and wound exudates in breast cancer].

Penetration of aspoxicillin (ASPC), a new semisynthetic penicillin of broad spectrum, into normal and cancer tissue and wound exudate were examined in breast cancer. ASPC was administered by single injection of 1 or 2 g. The concentration of ASPC in the resected skin, normal mammary gland and cancer were similar to their serum levels, when ASPC was administered before radical mastectomy. ASPC concentration in the wound exudate which was collected from the inserted drains into the resected area reached the maximum at 3 approximately 4 hours after the injection at the levels of 19.4 micrograms/ml (1 g) and 35.1 micrograms/ml (2 g). The level decreased gradually by maintained still high at 3.7 micrograms/ml (1 g) and 11.4 micrograms/ml (2 g) even 8 hours after the injection. From these results it may be expected that ASPC is a useful penicillin in the breast surgery.

[Heterotopic gastric mucosa in the wall of the gallbladder: a case report and review of the literature].

A case of heterotopic gastric mucosa (pyloric gland) in the wall of the gallbladder was reported. A 58 year-old woman was admitted with a history of sudden attack of hypochondralgia radiating to the back, but she had no fever and jaundice. Ultrasonography demonstrated high echo at the neck and body of the gallbladder. Cholecystectomy was performed with a diagnosis of the gallbladder tumor containing gall stone. The surgical specimen revealed a 15 X 14 X 8mm subserosal tumor in the body and chronic cholecystitis, but showed no metaplastic differentiation in the mucosa. The cause was considered to be congenital. Heterotopic tissue in the wall of the gallbladder was very rare. In the literature, there were 29 cases of gastric mucosa and 27 cases of pancreatic tissue. The mean age of incidence were 31.9 and 42.0 year-old, respectively. There is no sex difference. The lesion was located in the cystic duct and the neck of the gallbladder in half the patients. Cholelithiasis and/or cholecystitis was complicated in many cases, and it might be associated with heterotopic tissue whereas the etiology is unknown.

[Reticuloendothelial function as a prognostic factor in breast cancer].

Reticuloendothelial function was investigated in breast cancer by the 131I-microaggregated albumin method using the parameters of phagocytic function (K value) and metabolic function (M value). Reticuloendothelial function of the patients with breast cancer was decreased compared with that of the controls, and it was related to the peripheral lymphocyte count. This finding indicates that reticuloendothelial function is one of the prognostic factors in breast cancer.

Diagnostic survey at Yamanashi School for Blind: importance of heredity.

The commonest cause of blindness among the 67 patients at the Yamanashi School for the Blind was congenital cataract (16). Next was retinitis pigmentosa or choroido-retinal degeneration (8), then retinopathy of prematurity (7). Congenital glaucoma and brain tumor each contributed five. Four were due to microphthalmia/micro-cornea and five to high myopia. Direct ocular trauma caused three. Two each were attributable to complete albinism, aniridia, congenital nystagmus and bilateral retinoblastoma. Single cases each of anophthalmos, Behçet's disease, Hallerman-Streiff syndrome, hydrocephalus, macular degeneration and optic atrophy were recorded. 41.8% of all cases were "very probably" hereditary and a further 10.4% "probably" so. 12.2% of the hereditary cases had consanguineous parents. An autosomal recessive (AR) cause is the likeliest explanation for the majority of the nonenvironmental causes (42.9% very probably AR and 14.3% probably AR), so that the possibility of prevention by genetic counseling was limited, but should have been given as soon as the first affected child was born. Parental consanguinity supports an autosomal recessive cause. 10.2% are very definitely due to an autosomal dominant gene; in them, counseling may well also have had a limited effect but might have prevented the birth of one or both of the siblings with aniridia inherited from the mother, and at least two, if not all three, of the three siblings with congenital cataract also inherited from the mother.

Adenocarcinoma of the sublingual gland: case report and 50 year review of the literature.

Primary adenocarcinoma arising in the sublingual gland is extremely rara, accounting for six cases reported in extensive survey of the literature for the period of 1930 to 1981. A case of adenocarcinoma of the sublingual gland is documented, demonstrating a highly malignant nature of the disease. This neoplasm possesses particular therapeutic problems owing to the relative lack of symptoms and the delay of initial medical observation after the onset of symptoms.
