Using indirect immunofluorescence, o-antibodies against the homologous causative organism were determined in 119 adults with chronic pyelonephritis, during a one to two-and-a-half year period. Humoral antibodies were determined in the same group of patients with the Widal reaction and indirect haemagglutination. The results were compared with those in a group of adults without renal disease, using the same serological reactions. In adults with chronic pyelonephritis the antibody titre (by immunofluorescence) was above normal limits (as obtained in the healthy group) in 63.1%. The corresponding results for the Widal reaction and indirect haemagglutination reaction were 16.5% and 12, respectively. Indirect immunofluorescence is thus clearly better than the other two serological methods in the diagnosis of chronic pyelonephritis.

After a short reference to the significance of the screening examinations and early diagnosis for the secondary prevention in disease of the heart and the circulatory system the authors give a survey on the methods of screening examinations and the early diagnosis bening at disposal nowadays in organic disturbances of the arterial bloods supply. Anamnestic, clinical and paraclinical methods are cited, in which cases the paraclinical methods are subdivided into haemostasiological, haemodynamic and biochemical examinations.

The effect of intravenous continuous drip infusion of Bencyclan (8mg/min) on regional cerebral blood flow was investigated in 30 adult patients, using the intraarterial 133-Xe-clearance-method and a 10-detector-equipment. The application of Bencyclan in 5 persons with normal cerebral circulation entailed no significant change of rCBF. In 5 from 15 patients with cerebrovascular disease in the awake state continuous drip infusion of Bencyclan caused a decrease of global and regional cerebral blood flow with reduction of the regional flow values about 15.3 to 28.4 p.c. In 10 patients there was seen no statistical significant change of regional cerebral blood flow as compared with the flow values in the resting state. In 10 patients rCBF-examinations were performed prior and after intravenous injection of Bencyclan in a state of a very light nitrous-oxide-halothan analgesia. In all patients Bencyclan caused an overall decrease of cerebral blood flow about 8.8 p.c. to 24.3 p.c. which in 5 cases achieved statistical significance.
Studies were undertaken in 40 patients with chronic pancreatitis six months to seven and a half years (mean 25 months) after operation, results being compared with pre-operative findings. Measurements included: exercise capacity, absence of pain, body weight, endocrine (36) and exocrine (25) pancreatic function. Almost all patients returned to full or only slightly impaired activity, were free of pain or had less pain and weight increase. Exocrine pancreatic function (secretin-pancreozymin test and faecal fat) was noted in 11 of 25 patients. In another 11 pre-operative progression was arrested. But endocrine function improved in only three of 36 and worsened in 13 (manifestation of subclinical diabetes in eight, worse glucose tolerance in five). The results justify a more active surgical approach in the treatment of chronic pancreatitis in order to save the patients from an often long and painful "burning out" of the disease on purely conservative treatment. Furthermore, exocrine pancreatic function, at least, is maintained or improved.

Perivascular deposits of lipid material around small encephalic vessels in infants had by some authors been regarded as an indication of damage to the vessel walls. It had been presumed that an acute cerebral oedema could be favoured by such a process. Studying the problem in 100 cases of forensic and non-forensic autopsies were found deposits in cells of the adventitial space in the brain of all infants older than 4-5 weeks as well as in those of older infants and adults. Almost exclusively the vessels of the subcortical medulla were concerned. Further histochemical investigations of lipid material in cells of the CNS suggest that the deposited materials is not a preliminary stage of myelination. The deposits seem to be caused by a slight physiological parenchymal degeneration.
It was ascertained whether the sum total of the dip areas 60 minutes prior to delivery is an evaluating parameter for judging the fetal state. The cardiotokograms of 62 deliveries with a normal newborn state (newborn index 1) and forty with a pathological newborn state (newborn index 2 and 3) were digitally computer [5]. By proper programming numerous decriptive dip parameter can be determined, e.g. the amplitude, duration, area, lag time, recovery time, fluctuation before, within, and after the dip. The sum total of the dip areas was calculated from the CTG 60 minutes before delivery. Only cardiotokograms with at least two decelerations were included. The pathological newborn group has a larger mean sum total of dip areas than the group with a normal index (Fig. 1). This difference, however, is not significant. Mean values were calculated for other descriptive parameters, e. g. dip fluctuations, lag time, dip amplitude etc. These also differ only slightly between the two groups. (Fig 2). Hence they give no satisfactory decription of the fetal state. By including several dip parameters simultaneously [7] an evaluating parameter can be determined for both decelerations. The various descriptive parameter are given different weights and are added up (discrimination analysis). In analogy to the sum total of the dip areas the sum total of the evaluating parameters was calculated. The difference between the two groups with respect to these evaluating parameter sums is significant. (Fig. 3). The sum of total dip areas alone does not appear to be a sufficient FHR parameter for evaluating the fetal state. Evaluation is significantly improved by considering simultaneously several descriptive parameters.
Among the aetiological factors of periodontal disease, the shallow vestibule plays a rather important role. The deviations from normal architecture may be subdivided into several forms. Surgical intervention is indicated in case of functional trouble which already exists if the blood supply is reduced by loading. A discussion of various operating techniques is followed by the description of a modification of the method of Edlan and Mejachar that has been used in more than 1000 cases up to now. The objectice evaluation of the results achieved justifies the recommendation of this technique.

In a 13-year-old boy the occurence of a sialadenosis of the submaxillary glands was observed in association with anorexia nervosa (a.n.). The non-inflammatory salivary gland enlargement became apparent after the boy had suffered a progressive weight loss of 5 kilograms during a period of three years prior to admission. The psychogenic origin of the disorder could be confirmed by 1. the history of the patient being almost identical compared to the few observations of a.n. in males, 2. the absence of any other organ involvement, and 3. follow up over a period of two years during which time the boy regained normal weight, and the salivary gland enlargement disappeared spontaneously. The diagnosis of sialadenosis was based on histological examination.
