By means of the phenoloxidase reaction it would be shown that the POZ appear in haemopoetic cell islands of the yolk sac being hatched 6 days and being hatched 11 days, they appear in embryonary tissues. Favoured target organs are the spleen and the bone marrow, though also at the same time can be seen some cells in the connective tissue of the embryo. POZ can also be found in the bursa of FABRICIUS. The participation of the POZ in immunological reactions is supposed.
Investigations performed with cryostat sections of the gut, spleen and lung of the rat have shown, that the substrate of PER H2O2 inhibits the PO activity in dependence of the concentration, and that obvious the PO substrate DOPA is no suitable H2-donator for the PER reaction. Therefore a false positive reaction by the PO proof is not to be expected. Copper sulfat does not influence the PO reaction, but it accelerates melanin formation, which causes an unspecific colouring of the tissue.

Blood acid-base status, serum electrolytes, and urine pH were examined in 64 infants and children with phenylketonuria (PKU) treated with three different low phenylalanine protein hydrolyzates (Aponti, Cymogran, AlbumaidXP) and two synthetic amino acid mixtures (Aminogran, PAM). The formulas caused significant differences in acid-base status, serum potassium, and chloride, and in urine pH. In acid-base balance studies in two patients with PKU, Aponti, PAM, and two modifications of PAM (P2 + P3) were given. We observed a change from mild alkalosis to increasing metabolic acidosis from Aponti (serum bicarbonate 25,8 mval/liter) to P3 (24,0Y, P2 (19, 3) and PAM (17,0). Urine pH decreased and renal net acid excretion increased. In the formulas PAM, P2 and P3 differences in renal net acid excretion correlated with differences in chloride and sulfur contents of the diets and of the urines. New modifications of AlbumaidXP and of PAM, prepared according to our recommendations, showed normal renal net acid excretion (1 mEq/kg/24 hr) in a balance study performed in one patient with PKU and normal acid base status in 20 further patients.

Studies on the development and egg production of Capillaria hepatica and on the macroscopically visible alterations of the liver and spleen of the host were carried out in experimentally infected Mastomys natalensis. Following the oral administration of infective eggs the first stage larvae hatched in the caecum of fasting and fed animals after about 8 and 15 hours respectively. The prepatency could be found with 20 days. The dynamics and duration of egg production of the parasite proved to be dependent on the infective dose. After the first week of patency increasing numbers of eggs/liver were found with increasing doses of infection up to 800 eggs per animal. This relation could not be observed 76 days post infection. After infections with 50, 300 und 800 eggs per animal maximum egg production was found between 60 and 72, 36 and 48 and about 30 days p.i., respectively. The egg production of the parasites correspondently continued for more than 85 days after infection or had ceased 72 or 48 days p.i. Intraperitoneal administration of infective eggs revealed a lower infection rate, evaluated by the number of eggs per liver, than oral infection.

On the occasion of a storage test in order to evaluate the tightness of milk packing materials to permeating flavours by sensory analysis the statistical method for judging the concerned assessors recommended by Römer and Renner was applied. We gained the experience, that this method allows no statement about the assessor's sensory ability at all, but merely fixes his order of precedence in a panel as to his ability to realize sensory differences in the scope of one special problem. The mentioned statistical procedure cannot substitute a selection of assessors aimed at the subject of the following sensory analysis.
In vivo evaluation of the Lillehei-Kaster heart valve prosthesis was performed in 28 patients; 22 had undergone aortic valve replacement and 6 had had mitral valve replacement. Mean pressure gradients ranged from 6 to 53 mm Hg in aortic prostheses; valve area varied from 0.83 to 2.9 cm2. The maximum opening angle of 80 degrees was never reached in this group of patients; opening angles ranged from 57 to 74 degrees without evidence of disc malfunction. There was no correlation between the ratio of effective to geometric valve area and the degree of opening of the disc occluder. Similar results were found in the mitral valve group. Gradients ranged from 6.0 to 12.5 mm Hg and valve area from 1.6 to 2.2 cm2. The maximum opening angle was 59 to 63 degrees. It is concluded that incomplete opening of the disc occluder in pivoting-disc valves is not necessarily a sign of disc malfunction. Lillehei-Kaster valves smaller than 18 mm in internal diameter should be avoided in adults, and outflow aortoplasty for implantation of a larger prosthesis should be used in patients who have a narrow aortic root.
29 patients with Lillehei-Kaster vale prostheses, 22 in aortic position and 7 in mitral position, were examined. With small aortic valves (A 14 - A 16) mean gradients averaged 32 mm Hg, valve area varied between 1 and 1.2 cm2. Only size A 20 and larger showed satisfying gradient and valve areas of 1.9 cm2 and greater. The mitral gradients averaged between 10 and 5 mm Hg according to size and valve areas were about 1.6 cm2. The maximal measured opening angle of the pivoting disk averaged 64degrees in the aortic valves and 61degrees in the mitral valves; complete opening (80degrees) was not observed.
1. The conduction velocities of individual motor axons innervating twitch and slow muscle fibres of the frog were determined by intracellular recording of junctional potentials elicited by stimulating the motor nerves at two different points. 2. In normal pyriformis muscles twitch and slow fibres were found to be innervated by two distinct populations of motor axons. Twitch fibre axons conducted at 10-18-7 m/sec, while the conduction velocities of slow fibre axons ranged from 0-5 to 5 m/sec (at 7-9 degrees C). The thresholds for electrical stimulation were significantly lower in the fast than in the slow axons population. 3. Following denervation by crushing the sciatic nerve fast axons which re-innervated the muscle had lower conduction velocities than normal but could still be identified. These lower conduction velocities were measured proximal to the site of the crush and did not recover over a period of 446 days. 4. Fast motor axons regenerated more quickly than slow axons and re-innervated twitch as well as slow muscle fibres non-selectively. About 1 month later slow axons re-established synaptic contacts with slow (and some twitch) muscle fibres. Simultaneous re-innervation by fast and slow motor axons was occasionally observed in slow muscle fibres. Finally, the slow muscle fibres were innervated by slow axons only, while synapses of fast axons could no longer be found in this type of muscle fibre. 5. Action potentials were observed in denervated as well as in re-innervated slow muscle fibres; they disappeared as re-innervation progressed. 6. It is concluded that non-selective re-innervation of slow muscle fibres is present in the frog; it is, however, a transient phenomenon followed by restoration of the original innervation pattern.
