Phenobarbital drinking curves after varied water deprivation.

The phenobarbital dose-drinking response curves were obtained for 11 1/2 and 23 1/2 hr of water deprivation in rats. The results indicated that the same quadratic curve was found in both cases displaced as a function of degree of deprivation. These results are explicable by regarding phenobarbital as an adequate stimulus for drinking or by disinhibiting drinking if level of inhibition is not directly concerned with regulation of water ingestion per se. The response to phenobarbital upon the days following injection is similar for both degrees of deprivation investigated.

[Prestenotic narrowing in the upper urinary tract (author's tract)].

While prestenotic dilatation in the upper urinary tract is considered as a characteristic radiological feature, earlier narrowing due to compensating hypertrophy of the musculature is either ignored or misinterpreted. Several examples of prestenotic narrowing are demonstrated and their significance in radiological diagnosis is stressed. This raises the question whether the narrowing of the ureters, seen in cases of bladder neck obstruction, particularly with prostatic hypertrophy, can be explained by a similar physiopathological response. This question can only be answered by performing pressure measurements during the course of radiological examination; the results would, however, be of doubtful value since the introduction of the ureteric catheter would lead to an additional unphysiological state.

Bullous dermatosis among patients with chronic renal failure of high dose frusemide.

Twelve of 56 patients with chronic renal failure, all treated with frusemide (Lasix) in daily doses of 0.5-2 g, developed bullae in areas exposed to light. In most cases the bullae developed during summer months and disappeared later in the year whether the frusemide treatment was continued or not. In two patients the eruption reappeared when treatment was resumed. Disturbance of the porphyrin metabolism was not found, neither could a change in the frusemide metabolism be demonstrated. Tissue typing and blood groups showed no difference from the average population. It is concluded that the condition presumably is a photo reaction due to the frusemide treatment but it cannot be said whether it is allergic or toxic.

Action potentials in slow muscle fibres of the frog during regeneration of motor nerves.

1. Pyriformis muscles of Rana temporaria were denervated by crushing the sciatic nerve inside the pelvis. At different times during regeneration of the nerve, slow muscle fibres were examined for the presence of all-or-none responses. 2. During the early period of re-innervation (35-60 days), slow muscle fibres were found to be non-selectively re-innervated by (foreign) fast-conducting motor axons. All slow fibres during this period were able to produce full sized action potentials, with overshoot. 3. Action potentials markedly decreased in amplitude and eventually disappeared completely between day 61-110 following denervation; during this period, slow muscle fibres were re-innervated by slowly-conducting motor axons. 4. Functional re-innervation by slowly-conducting motor axons, in the late stages of re-innervation, was not a necessary condition for the suppression of the action potential. Slow fibres innervated by fast motor axons, as well as denervated slow fibres, lost the action potential simultaneously with slow fibres which were re-innervated by slowly-conducting motor axons. 5. It is suggested that (small) slowly-conducting motor axons can exert a 'trophic' influence on the slow fibre membrane, independent of their synaptic function.

[Calcium transport via the placenta by simultaneous fluoride administration in rats].

Ca-45 was injected Wistar-rats during pregnancy that receive destillated or with 100 ppm F- enriched water. The effect of fluoride on transport of calcium through placenta was calculated from results of Ca-45-activity of fetuses. Besides results were obtained about fluoride- and Ca-45-uptake of mothers femur and about the development of rats under fluoride ingestion

[The dental hygienist].

On the basis of a literature study, the author outlines the international development of the career of dental hygienist and deals with her possible uses. Then follows a description of the development and of the actual tasks in the GDR, starting from the objectives of the socialist health service.

[Bacteriological studies of the human amniotic fluid in repeated amniocenteses].

The amniocentesis to gain increasing importance ought to be examined whether an alteration of the bacterial flora of the amniotic fluid was caused by repeated amniocentesis. 128 samples of amniotic fluid selected by abdominal amniocentesis were placed in microbiological cultures. Bacteria was isolated in 30 cases, originated predominantly by pollution. Under the circumstance of strong sterile conditions the amniocentesis proven even when repeated a diagnostical way of procedure which does not represent any danger to mother nor child.
