Experiments on the chemotheraphy of a transplantable glioblastoma in the rat, employing 1-(2-chloroethyl)-3-cyclohexyl-1-nitrosourea (CCNU).

A glioblastoma was induced in BD-II rats by weekly i.v. injections of methylnitrosourea and transplanted intracerebrally in numerous passages. The take rate was 100%. For the experiments with CCNU, solid pieces of tumour were implanted into the right parietal region. The cytostatically treated animals lived significantly longer. The untreated tumour rats had an average survival time of 18 days (counted from the time of transplantation), and the rats treated with CCNU had an average survival time of 28 days. The median values were 19 and 28 days.

[Quantitative gated radionuclide cine cardiography. I Technical basis and methods (author's transl)].

Scintigraphic evaluation of the heart function is performed by means of sequential camera scintigraphy following i.v. injection of a 99mTc albumin bolus. The first tracer passage is registered during 30 seconds. About 10 minutes later--after equilibration of the tracer in the blood pool--volume curves of the left ventricle are recorded from a series of about 500 heart cycles. The principles of a computer program which has been developed for this method are described and discussed in detail.

Atopic dermatitis and congenital deafness.

In a family with perceptive, non-progressive hearing loss several of the members suffered from atopic dermatitis. The proband had a severe atopic dermatitis and an extremely high IgE value. Some of the family members suffered from atopic dermatitis, others from deafness, and some from both diseases. The co-existence of these two disorders has been previously described in two families. Atopic dermatitis and perceptive, non-progressive congenital deafness might be genetically associated.

Fat necrosis - a cause of pancreatic parenchymal necrosis?

Acute pancreatic necrosis resulted when oleic acid or olive oil was injected into the pancreatic duct or rats. After injection of droplets of both lipids into the pancreatic interstitial tissue, coagulation-type necrosis of acinar tissue developed adjacent to these droplets. Mono-olein or paraffin oil caused no histological alterations of acinar cells. It is concluded that (1) the deleterious effect of olive oil on the pancreas is mediated through fatty acids released by pancreatic lipase, and (2) fatty acids split off in fat necrosis of acute pancreatitis may damage adjacent pancreatic acinar tissue.

[The participation of phenol-(DOPA-)oxidase containing cells (POZ) with the delayed hypersensitivity. (Preliminary report) (author's transl)].

With the aid of histochemical techniques phenol-(DOPA-)oxidase containing cells were detected in the skin, liver, spleen, small intestine and blood of guinea-pigs. The number of these cells is considerably increased in the connective tissue of the skin during the delayed hypersensitivity reaction which was provoked by an intracutaneous injection of cartilage antigen in guinea-pigs immunized with the same antigen.

[Herpetiform bilateral epithelial corneal dystrophy caused by Tyrosinemia (Richner-Hanhart-Syndrome) (author's transl)].

Nutritional Tyrosinemia in animal experiments (Schweizer, Burns a. o.) caused an epithelial corneal dystrophy. The corresponding clinical picture is the Richner-Hanhart-Syndrome with herpetiform epithelial corneal dystrophy, palmo-plantar-keratosis and -- in some case -- a later developing oligophrenia. Goldsmith and coworkers suceeded to find out that all these symptoms are combined with tyrosinemia presumably caused ty one congenital enzyme defect. -- Personal clinical observations of such patients demonstrate that as well the corneal as the dermatological symptoms could be cured by diet, if the diagnosis is made in childhood. Corneal symptoms are still absent with a tyrosinemia as high as 10 mg%. Dietetic formula was found out to maintain this level, which is low enough to avoid the symptoms of Richner-Hanhart-Syndrome and certainly high enough to avoid symptoms of nutritional deficiency. One might expect that oligophrenia will not develop if this diet is used consequently. -- Since the first corneal symptoms develop already during the first years of life the ophthalmologist ought to know this etiology. The levels of tyrosinemia are so exorbitant (30--50 mg%) that the laboratory diagnosis is possible without any difficulty. If the diagnosis is only made in adult patients dietetic therapy is of limited value.

[Comparative examinations of gastric juice in healthy infants and in infants suffering from enteritis (author's transl)].

There are significant differences between the shapes of curves of gastric juice volume, acid quantity, pH levels, and peptic activity, in the three age groups of healthy infants under examination. Significant differences are also seen in all three age groups with regard to the quantity of acid calculated in relation to 1 ml gastric juice, as well as the relative peptic activity (volume activity). The amount of gastric juice is proportional to the bodyweight and body surface of the infants, whereas acid concentration and peptic volume activity show a relatively steeper increase.

[The periodontally prophylactic effect of the dentifrice "Silka". 1. The effect of the dentifrice "Silka" on the periodontium compared to other dentifrices from the DDR production].

As compared to a toothpaste without periodontal-prophylactic adjuncts, the commercially available silka toothpaste exerted a statistically significant beneficial effect on the chronically inflamed gingivae. Thus, a periodontal-prophylactic efficiency may be attributed to the Silka toothpaste.

[Gingival bleeding].

Gingival bleeding is not of decisive importance in diagnosticating periodontal diseases, since various endogenous causative factors and exogenous conditions may enhance its occurrence. In the absence of periodontal disease, gingival bleeding might be a symptom of a systemic disease. Because gingival bleeding is in most cases the first sign of an affection of the tooth-supporting structures that the patient observes, it should be, for all the difficulties its substantivation, be considered in history taking and for self-control.

[The periodontal-prophylactic effect of the toothpaste "Silka". 2. Effects of circulation-stimulations additives on the periodontium in relation to age and sex and in smokers based on Kötzschke's periodontal index].

On subdiving the patients into age-groups, it was found that the relative improvement in the 46--55 year-old patients amounted only to 18% as compared to nearly 27% in patients of age-groups in which hormonal influences are likely to occur. The sex-linked differences in the periodontal condition became evident by higher initial values for the inflammatory component and a low relative improvement (25.53%) in women than in men (28.25%). The relative improvement in smokers (43.49%) as compared to that in non-smokers (23.01%) demonstrated the beneficial effect of benzylnicotinate on the nicotine-induced vasoconstriction.
