Four subfractions of amniotic fluid AFP identified by lentil lectin crossed-line affinity immunoelectrophoresis.

The subfraction of AFP was examined in 11 amniotic fluids at 43-121 days of gestation by lentil lectin crossed-line affinity immunoelectrophoresis. AFP in the amniotic fluid could be separated into four subfractions (type A, B, C, and D) according to reactivity with lentil lectin. Types A and C seem to be produced by the fetal liver, and types B and D by the yolk sac. However a part of type B may be synthesized in the fetal liver.

A case of membranous proliferative glomerulonephritis type III (Burkholder) with the deposition of both HBeAg and HBsAg.

A case of HB virus associated MPGN type III was described for the first time in a 10 year old Japanese girl. She was followed for a period of 7 years with serial serological work-up and renal biopsy. When she was found seropositive for HBe antigen was stained predominantly in capillary walls, but HBs antigen was also detected in capillary walls and mesangium. The results suggest that both HBe- and HBs antigen antibody immune complexes may play a significant role in the development of HB virus associated nephropathy; HBe antigen for MGN and HBe- and HBs antigens for MPGN type III. Although HB virus associated nephropathy is believed to be a rather benign disorder, the present case warrants a close follow-up because of chronicity of massive proteinuria and renal pathology.

Long-term potentiation investigated in a slice preparation of striate cortex of young kittens.

In slice preparations from kitten striate cortex, long-term potentiation (up to 15 h) of field potentials was demonstrated after conditioning stimulation of white matter. Current source-density analysis and measurement of response latencies of cortical units indicated that the potentiation represented enhancement of both geniculo-cortical transmission in layer IV and intracortical transmission in layer II--III.

Multiple angiitis of mesenterial arteries in guinea pigs induced by intraperitoneal administration of high doses of Na2 EDTA. II. Electron microscopic study.

By application of high doses of EDTA we could induce angiitis-like lesions in the mesenterial arteries. In this paper we report the findings of electronmicroscopic investigations of these lesions. They consist of dissociation of the smooth muscle cells by scanty intermuscular spaces, probably by loosening of the basal laminae and matrix. Both endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells show minimal changes. The elastic lamellae were partially interrupted.

An appraisal of radical pancreatoduodenectomy based on glucagon secretion.

In an attempt to elucidate changes in endocrine functions of the pancreas associated with radical pancreatectomy for periampullary cancer, plasma levels of insulin (IRI) and pancreatic glucagon (IRG) were measured during arginine infusion in ten patients with periampullary cancer both before and after pancreatoduodenectomy. The response of plasma IRI to arginine which was impaired before the surgery showed further impairment after the surgery. This finding is consistent with the previous results obtained in such patients by oral glucose tolerance testing. Also, the response of plasma IRG was subnormal preoperatively and was found to be impaired postoperatively. Both maximum and integrated secretion of IRG during arginine infusion decreased after the surgery in all instances. From these findings, it is concluded that pancreatoduodenectomy aggravates the already disordered pancreatic endocrine functions, as indicated by arginine infusion in patients with periampullary cancer.

The possibility of three types of cells in cultured glomeruli in vitro.

Although three types of cells are known to exist in glomeruli in vivo, it is not clear whether the same is true of glomerular cells in vitro. The outgrowth from the cultured glomeruli was continuously monitored with time-lapse cinemicroscopy until the glomerular tissues completely disappeared. The results clearly indicated that only two types of cells arise from the glomeruli in vitro, epithelial (E cell) and fibroblastic (M cell). A cell line of M cells was established that showed relatively constant morphologic characteristics as compared with the M cells in primary cultures. Morphologic evidence was obtained indicating that M cells produce GBM-like materials and collagen fibers with clearly visible periodicity.
