A new semiautomatic image analyzing system based on an APPLE II or IIe personal computer is described. The configurations of the hardware and software are extensively explained. The possibilities of applying the system are demonstrated by different examples taken from various projects in biological research and clinical pathology. The system is designed to fulfil the following requirements: (1) stepwise realization as a unit-by-unit system according to individual needs and interests, (2) acquisition and calculation of morphometric parameters, (3) provision of solutions for the greatest possible number of given problems in clinical and experimental pathology, (4) direct connection of the system to host computers for on-line data transfer and evaluation, and (5) optimum cost-benefit ratio by manifold application possibilities for the individual hardware and software elements. The advantages of the unit-by-unit system with personal computers outweigh in many respects the disadvantages (for example, increased file handling and limited capacity) in comparison with the closed automatized image evaluation system, particularly with regard to costs, flexibility and compatibility. The system is being further developed in collaboration with Kontron Bildanalyse GmbH, Eching/Munich, FRG.

After a brief introduction describing the development and organisation of the National Socialist extermination programmes to eliminate patients suffering from mental diseases, a description is given of the way these programmes were translated into reality in the then province of Hannover. The provincial government implemented these programmes hesitatingly but nevertheless as ordered, whereas the administrative decrees were complied with in a widely different manner by the individual psychiatric hospitals. These differences in the daily routine on-the-spot realisation of the extermination programmes suggest raising the question of professional ethics in psychiatry, as outlined by the author.

Excessive iodine supply of at least 700 mg inorganic iodine in foals and of more than 350 mg iodine in pregnant and lactating mares cause a high incidence of goitres in the newborn and disorders in the long leg bones of foals. Elevated phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase content in the blood may indicate a severe disturbance in the bone metabolism. Of 39 pregnant mares 17 aborted and some of the mares also showed goitres. After withdrawal of the iodine supply normalization took place. Foals born more than 6 weeks later showed normal conditions. The goitres in the mares and the high blood levels of iodine decreased.

The present paper describes a new method for the measurement of cardiac output (CO) and cardiac shunt (CS). The CO method is based on the accurate determination of the concentration of the indicator in large vessels. For the measurement of the left to right shunting volumes, a double tracer technique is used by which radioactively labeled transferrin or erythrocytes are applied together with radioactively labelled human-serum-albumin (HSA) microspheres. The results obtained using these methods were compared with the data obtained by invasive methods. High correlation of both sets of data suggests that the proposed methods might provide an excellent extension of noninvasive procedures in the first months of a childs life.
A vascular ring formed by a left aortic arch, a retro-esophageal segment, a right descending aorta and right-sided ductus or ligamentum arteriosum is a very rare anomaly up to now; only 16 cases have been reported in the literature. This report presents the case of an infant suffering from the symptoms of airway and esophageal compression, who was successfully operated on for this anomaly at the age of 5 months. The diagnosis was established by means of esophagogram and angiography. Diagnostic criteria and guidelines for therapy are discussed.
Symbiotic DNA sequences involved in nodulation by Rhizobium must include genes responsible for recognizing homologous hosts. We sought these genes by mobilizing the symbiotic plasmid of a broad host-range Rhizobium MPIK3030 (= NGR234) that can nodulate Glycine max, Psophocarpus tetragonolobus, Vigna unguiculata, etc., into two Nod- Rhizobium mutants as well as into Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Subsequently, cosmid clones of pMPIK3030a were mobilized into Nod+ Rhizobium that cannot nodulate the chosen hosts. Nodule development was monitored by examining the ultrastructure of nodules formed by the transconjugants. pMPIK3030a could complement Nod- and Nif- deletions in R. leguminosarum and R. meliloti as well as enable A. tumefaciens to nodulate. Three non-overlapping sets of cosmids were found that conferred upon a slow-growing Rhizobium species, as well as on R. loti and R. meliloti, the ability to nodulate Psophocarpus and Vigna, thus pointing to the existence of three sets of host-specificity genes. Recipients harboring these hsn regions had truly broadened host-range since they could nodulate both their original hosts as well as MPIK3030 hosts.
